Sanchez has never really had any competition and I think this has been done on purpose because of Mark's fragile mental makeup. Rex has coddled Sanchez from day 1. I don't care if a 40 year old Brunell is behind him, or Tim Tebow, or McElroy. Sanchez has played so bad that he should have been benched many, many times in his 4 year career but Rex refuses to do so. Tebow or McElroy probably wasn't the answer at QB, but there is no excuse for not seeing what they could have done when Sanchez was playing the position worse than anyone in the league.

I have my doubts that Rex will turn his career over to any other QB since he has already nearly thrown it away because he is so loyal to Sanchez.

McElroy was inactive in 2011, so that was not an option, and yes, Brunell was not a real backup. Neither was Tebow.

I think if not for Tebow's presence on the squad last year, Rex might well have benched Sanchez earlier, but we will never know that. I would not have wanted him to put Tebow in for Sanchez, so I can't be too hard on Ryan for that one.

If things suck so f'ing bad with the Jets that they have to play Sanchez this coming year (ugh), I don't necessarily expect Rex to give Sanchez the same looooong leash he's had before.

I have no problem with you thinking Sanchez isn't very good and shouldn't be our QB. This idea that he was coddled, has a fragile makeup and the HC has hurt him by not giving him enough competition complete nonsense.

Sanchez was evaluated and drafted to start from day one. That was the plan from day one. This cry for competition isn't about helping Mark Sanchez, it's about replacing him.

Stop blaming the organization for not bringing in competition, blame them for making a poor evaluation to begin with.

We are installing a new O, we don't need a pre-season competition, we need the best coaches and scouts making a decision who the best QB is as soon as possible and put them in with the first unit as close to day one as possible.

They should just cut Simms and McElroy and bring in veterans

Assuming Tebow is gone as well

I agree wholeheartedly with this post. But I will focus on the going forward part.

At this point it makes no sense to have a Qb competition. You have a Qb competition, if then, when you have an average Qb who you think you might, key word being might, be better off replacing with someone better who, presumably, can take you farther in the league. But since you already have a competent if not very good Qb, it's a bit of a bird in the hand situation - let the new guy show he can really do better (perhaps there might be some question about the new guy, but he has plenty of upside.).

You don't look forward to a Qb competition several months away, holding up development of your whole O, to see whether your one of the worst Qb's in the league with a proven record of being so can beat some other team's scrubs in camp.

The development part requires bringing in a new O with a new OC, and to make various roster decisions on who is actually going to play in this O. If a team had to wait until camp, meaning at some pont AFTER camp has begun, to not only determine who the Qb is, but what can be done with him in the new O, then you put that team at a disadvantage.

Much better to have the new offensive plan in place, the right roster decisions having been made, and all that integrated with an already made decision who the Qb is going to be. That person presumably being someone with a BETTER track record than the guy you are replacing.

Yeah yeah yeah the Jets have a limited opportunity given the cap to get someone else with a proven record as a top Qb in the league, and other factors. But the idea that the Jet FO right now should be hoping and planning for a Qb competition involving Mark Sanchez, not knowing ahead of time who might win? Well, I am not saying I know they are not doing that, but if they are doing that...

That my friends is pretty sad. Pathetic, really.

So you think that Sanchez has not been coddled, and you think he has a strong mental makeup?? Wow! Why is it reported that people within the organization have, publicly and privately, expressed concern with Sanchez's mental makeup?

I don't think the coach has hurt him by not giving him competition. He has just tried to protect Sanchez fragile mentality by not giving him competition.

I agree 100%! If competition doesn't make you a better QB, then you should be replaced. I don't think Sanchez responds well to pressure / competition, but I would be glad to be wrong. Either way, you need competition to get better QB play. That comes by the starter improving, or being replaced by the competition. Sticking with a QB who has played, and might continue to play, like crap and not having anyone behind him is absurd.

I can blame them for both. They made a poor evaluation and they haven't brought in a viable backup QB to replace that poor evaluation. Instead, they stick with Sanchez and hope he magically turns into a good QB. It is not going to happen.

I wouldn't want a preseason competition. I would hope that the coaches would see who the best QB is during training camp. If you don't bring in viable competition, that decision is already made.

You don't think Sanchez is a starting quality QB and no amount of competition is going to change that. FYI Sanchez has had plenty of NFL competition to evaluate him on as have all the guys we are bringing in to "compete" with him.

Teams who think they have a franchise QB aren't protecting, coddeling them or any other such nonesense, they are developing them.

Training camp when you are installing a new O is no place to evaluate your QB unless you don't have one. Up until the end of last year the Jets thought they had one.

Yes, three years too late on a bad OC.

Or letting Ryan have input on any offensive player EVER.. With his well known lack of offensive acumen, I'm amazed that Ryan was able to tell just how bad TT was and didn't try to sugarcoat it. He simply did not act in any way to allow for TT to impact the game one way or the other.

I don't think you get it. I never said bringing in competition would make Sanchez a better QB. I said competition should make a QB better. If it doesn't, that QB should be replaced if he continues to suck. Not having a viable backup on the team for Mark's 4 year career was a mistake.

You keep saying it is nonsense but don't back it up with anything. It is obvious that Sanchez was coddled early on. If you were unable to see it yourself like most are, you can look up quotes from players and read about anonymous reports from GMs and coaches that say the same.

The Jets invested so much in Sanchez, and my guess is they felt they had no other choice.

We aren't developing a rookie QB. Sanchez is going into his 5th year. It is clear to me that he doesn't have what it takes to be a great QB in this league. If you have not been able to see that over these years, then you probably never will. I don't want to waste anymore time trying to develop him. He will be a backup somewhere in a year or two.

We clearly do not have one. Even if we though we had one, we still should have had a viable backups and not 40 year old Brunell or Tebow. The Redskins RG3 has a better backup than what Sanchez has had his whole career. Tanehill in Miami has a better backup than what Sanchez has had his entire career. Most successful rookie QBs have viable backups.

Most rookie QB's are coddled, Sanchez wasn't. Being thrown into the NFL as a starting QB at a very young age isn't being coddled or protected. Sanchez was anything but coddled or protected he was thrown out naked into the fire.

The Jets not having a backup hasn't protected Sanchez in the least. It may well have been good for him to sit for awhile or be benched for a short period when the game appeared to be going to fast for him? You have it ass backwards.

The Jets screwed up in both the evaluation and the development, how can you blame the development on Sanchez alone?

I agree with this to an extent. Sanchez's strengths are play action with a strong running game. 11 and 12 saw deteriorating running games as compared to the AFCCG runs. He does not have the ability to sling it all around, only the elite can do that. Also, he has had no consistency with the WR's at all, it's been a revolving door. The problem is IDENTITY. This team has had no identity on offense two years in a row. They need to identify their strengths after FA and the draft and go from there. Unfortunately I just do not see Sanchez being that Super Bowl winning QB we had hoped we were going to develop in the 2009 draft.

Sanchez was anything but coddled. Unless you call Coddling starting from day 1 revolving door at receiver and running back and a turn style right tacke sure he was coddled.

If you think he was coddled because he did not have competition my question to you is what high draft QB does?

    Ryan
    Luck
    RG3
    Cam
    Henne
    Gabbert

    What starting QB has competition?

Kap has the job in San Fran they just shipped out his competition
    Mannining- Nope
    Brady- Nope
    Brees- Nope
    Tannehill- Nope

You either have a starting QB or you don't when one is decided on the competition is shipped out.

The fact they are looking to bring competition for Sanchez is not a good thing for Sanchez or the Jets it means they have no faith in the QB.

If Sanchez wins this competition and plays well they will not be looking for more competition for Sanchez but a viable back-up.

Garrard and Kolb will be no competition to Sanchez. his job is safe until 2014, when we draft our franchise QB.

Would anyone like to see the Jets bring in Vince Young? I don't have enough posts yet to start a thread so if some one wants to can they start one on Vince Young possibly?

I think Kolb would be very strong competition and he'd probably win the job.

He was given the starting job by default based on his draft position and who we had competing against him.

Not having a backup has enabled Sanchez to remain the starting QB for 4 years. Call it what you want. The Jets have gone out of their way repeatedly to reassure Sanchez that he is the starter. How many times has Rex stood up for Sanchez in press conferences and interviews with nothing but a "He is our guy" without having valid reasons of why he is the guy. Sanchez has never been threatened for his job, unless you consider looking at Manning. But once we knew Manning wasn't coming here, we gave Sanchez a ridiculous contract extension to once again assure him that he is the guy.

Have you not seen how Sanchez responds when he is criticized? Did you see how he responded when he was benched for 1 game last year? He is mentally fragile and the Jets knew that early on which is why they constantly tried to reinforce that he was the starting QB even though he shouldn't have been.

He was coddled because he has been given and insured the starting job regardless of his play.

Which one of those rookie QBs had 12 TDs and 20 Ints his rookie season? Which of those QBs continue to play like crap?

Most of those rookie QBs had backups that are better than what Sanchez has had, and most have already displayed that they have what it takes to be quality starters. No clear cut starter really needs competition, but it is a good thing to have. Obviously, Manning, Brady and Brees have displayed that they have what it takes to be great QBs in this league, so you know you have your guy. We never knew that with Sanchez.
