All these BAD points have been addressed before on this thread. In summary: If Revis is traded he will have to be replaced. Last time a first round pick was used on CB, the Jets got Kyle Wilson. Kyle Wilson is no Darrelle Revis. The Jets recent history of picking in the draft is not even mediocre. Counting on a great outcome from a trade for draft picks is silly. It is also silly to assume the Jets will get good value in picks. Do you really think anyone will give the Jets three high draft picks for him? Where'd you get taht from? Analyzing last year's past D with the notion that taking Revis out was the sole variable compared to 2011 is silly. It ignores several factors including the replacements of Pool and Leonhard at safety by the substantial upgrades in Landry and Bell. There were other factors as well. As for now, it's far from assured that Landry and Bell will return, anyway. As for Sanchez, he may well be a difficult trade, but focusing on the cap hit, trading Revis actually increases the cap hit his salary already has on the cap by roughly $3million. The cap issue goes away, anyway, in 14, when there will be plenty of money to pay other players.
$16 million is a fictional number. Most objective analyses show him signing for $13 mil or less. As for winning a championship, the Jets without Revis will be further away from and not closer to a championship.
Virtually every news outlet that I've seen report on this issue is saying Revis wants to be the highest paid defensive player which is around $16 million/year. Whether that's realistic or even true is unknown to me, but that's what's being reported.
Highest paid cb would be one dollar over Aso. I thought he was making $12mil. Highest paid defensive player at any position? Maybe you or someone else can track down exactly where that $16 mil figure comes from, since I have not been able to. It should also be obvious btw that what Revis may wish to have is not the same as what he might end up signing for in the end.
-Replacing Revis wouldn't be by a draft pick but promoting Cro to #1 and Wilson to #2 cb. Considering if we resign Landry/Bell than our defense is still good without Revis + additional draft picks. If we can't resign Landry/Bell than losing Revis would hurt more. However, the rumor is SF 1(31) and KC 2(34) for Revis with possiblity of an extra pick in '13 or '14. With the 31 and 34 picks, I would imagine we can draft Bernard and Warford. If not them, Im sure we can sign 2 instant starters to replace guys who left(RB,OL,TE,S) I know we save money if we trade Revis after draft but do we get a better deal? Also, the picks would count for '14. I guess the question is, save cap money and trade Revis after draft for picks in 14 or take cap hit, and have 5 picks in top 75 in '13 draft.
Appeal to popularity is also a fallacy. It doesn't matter what drama those guys have been reporting. Revis or his agent have never said anything close to that.
I have not heard of any reports that the Jets keep both Landry and Bell. It's not even clear they will keep one of them. And while many here hate Eric Smith, he was cut and is not likely to come back, too, and he also made some contributions back there last year. As far as the overall pass D last year, the upgrade at safety was not the only difference with 2011 when Revis was healthy all year. We went over this on these boards at some length right after the end of the most recent season. Suffice to say it is far from a simple matter to claim that the pass D was only marginally affected by Revis's absence. And ftr I am not a fan of Kyle Wilson, and he certainly is a liability in man coverage. but even putting aside my concerns about Wilson, are we prepared to make Trufant the nickel back on a contending team? I frankly felt we saw improvement from Trufant. But not enough, imo. I am sure Rex Ryan would argue the Jets should look to add a quality cb if Revis in fact is gone. Your own post indicates that the Jets would need to use "additional draft picks" to shore up the pass D if Revis goes. So part of the perceived benefit of his departure must be used to replace him at cb. Of course I know the perceived benefit is we replace him at a lower salary, but I remain concerned that the Jets will not get a quality cb even with a high draft pick, and there are so many other holes on the team that a high draft pick could/should be spent on. I also do not understand why you seem on one hand to be concerned about money when it ocmes to Revis, but do not acknowledge the ill effects of the cap hit if he is traded before June 1. The irony is this issue goes away next year, but in the short run the Jets are in cap hell. Worsening the situation under the cap strikes me as a huge negative to moving him now. The perceived benefit of getting high picks from another team to use in April's draft also runs against the reality that any team trading those high picks for him does not know that he will be materially rehabbed by next season. As a result I don't see any team giving the Jets a package of high picks for Revis when they don't know what condition he will be in. It is an illusion to suppose any team will trade a package of high 2013 for Revis without knowing that. I just sense here and elsewhere a frustration with the Jets cap and roster that is leading too many to take a we gotta do something NOW! approach when the actual facts and circumstances argue for patience.
Why is it bad keeping Revis? I say pay the guy. He's earned it, no? He's the best DB we've ever had, and to dump him in his prime is just fucking dumb. Besides, he's the face of this franchise and to throw him away on a couple of draft picks, that probably will not pan out, just speaks volumes of what this team really cares about. Let's just say it isn't winning.
Can we build a decent team with a CB earning between 12 and 16 million a year? Is he in his prime or at the tail end of it? How's his knee looking? Will he be the same when he comes back from it? The hamstring injury after his last holdout certainly affected his performance on the field for a while. Wouldn't a knee be worse? If we can't afford to sign him when he hits the open market next year, wouldn't it be dumb to let him go with no compensation? Wouldn't it be dumb not to explore what that compensation could be when you have chance?
Highest paid defensive player, not highest paid cornerback. You take the Mario Williams contract and add some to that. Yes, I know, Barcs says this is not true. But every news outlet says it is. Forgive me for maybe thinking that when every news outlet reports the same thing that they may actually be basing it on reality. I'll go with the media over Jets super homer on this one, thanks.
I understand that, but where is it coming from that Revis said he will insist on being the highest paid defensive player in the league?
I know its not as simple as our D is just as good without Revis but considering we are losing Devito,Pouha,Calvin Pace, Bart Scott, Landry, and Bell from starting Defense and Greene/Keller from offense while Slauson/Moore are FA give us a bunch of needs. Id like to sign most of these guys back, and draft there replacements in first few rounds in which I think we can do this year. Prior to the draft if we trade Revis we can get picks to help our team this year but his cap hit hurts '13. If we wait till after we save $$$ for cap but we don't get those players. IF we trade Revis than I would hope its for the best of the team and not to save money for Woody. If we do explore the idea of trading him for that reason, than Im sure Idzik would do it at the right time to make team better whether trade now or after draft. My simple wondering is do we take cap hit now and get 2 players who I would like to think to be impact guys right away and be able to grow before next year when we actually look like a decent team like a top tier RB(Bernard) LB(Ogletree/Greene) OR wait and trade him after for next years picks. Im already considering this team not a playoff contender in '13. What ever makes us set up to be good/contender in '14 is good for me.
Heh. One of those "sources" listed on google is your own post. Too funny. From page two of the google search: My Revis conflict - Page 32 - TheGangGreen.com Message Boardforums.theganggreen.com › New York Jets › New York JetsYou +1'd this publicly. Undo 18 hours ago – Virtually every news outlet that I've seen report on this issue is saying Revis wants to be the highest paid defensive player which is around $16 ... The vast majority of entries at the top of the search concern the Jets' supposed snub of Revis's agents. I see no authoritative source saying Revis will insist on making $16 million.
Look - I'm not going to do your research for you. It's easy to find if you want to find the truth. You're shocked that google returned a result from TGG? That's funny. NY Post first reported this a while back. ESPN, NFL.com, Yahoo Sports, PFT, Daily News and other news outlets have followed up on it. You don't want to believe it, fine.
Who said I am shocked??? I thought it was amusing, that's all. Look, my point is there is no authoritative source that says that Revis will not sign a contract for less than $16 million. Revis may want that amount. I want my boss to walk in here today and give me all his money, too. But if he doesn't, and please don't tell him, I will probably continue working at my present salary. BFD.
Obviously him wanting $16 million/year and him getting it are two different things. We all know his agents are pretty good at getting what they want though and he may well be the best defensive player in the league, so the argument is there.
It takes the hero worship of a child at this point to get by the fact that Revis has held out for maximum possible dollar twice with the Jets already. His uncle sat out a season in his prime once because he wanted the absolute top dollar he could get. I think there's no doubt at this point that Revis believes that he's worth the best defensive deal in football and in less than a year he's going to get a chance to test the proposition on the free market, completely unhindered. Whether or not Revis gets that grail deal the Jets are definitely roadkill along the way unless they find a way to limp off the road before that day comes.
1. Revis does not need to be replaced. Not many teams even have $10M WR on their squad. Two? Name one. 2. With both Landry and Bell about to be UFA, replenishing that spot IS much higher priority than replacing Revis. On top of that, Revis had to be replaced in a few years anyway. (He was 27 - just like Cro. Not a spring chicken any more.) So do you watch him crumble into mediocrity then draft another CB? or cash in when you can? You make the choice. I'd cash in, if I were you. 3. Maybe Revis won't get 2 1sts St. Louis has this year, but there WILL be teams that think they just need one more CB to get to the big dance.
