Many of those QB's were on their first contracts though- Brady, Rodgers, Manning, Roethlisberger, Flacco... Post SB, Im sure all of those QBs take up over 10% of their cap (maybe aside from Brad Johnson).

But Revis is special. Jets cannot afford to lose him. They must shell out all the money they can muster and keep him happy no matter the cost.

(Or that is the battle cry from these Revis Fanboys. Reason and accountability are long gone from their rationale.)

Rodgers signed 65M contract extension in Oct 31, 2008. He won SB after that. Even that extension was not a jaw-dropping one like Mevi$ is trying to grab. Rodgers was still playing at a high level, and at about 10M/yr mark - that's about twice a regular starter can get at maximum, so I would think that is the fair value for any franchise looking to compete for the foreseeable future. FYI, Rodgers played for some 9M or so this year. I am 100% sure that's less than 10% of their total cap.

Roethlisberger extended his contract early in 2008 - and that's the season he won his 2nd VLT. It was eye-whopping 102M contract too - over EIGHT years. Big ben was getting a little less than 13M, mind you.

Eli Manning extended his contract to some $15.3M/yr figure before winning his second SB. Yes, you CAN justify that kind of salary to QBs. CBs? You better be smoking something real good. At 16M? Ya know, you better be out of your fucking mind to even consider that kind of stupidity.

How can you want a guy like him to sign a 6yr/60M dollar contract

Unless all 60M is guaranteed you can cut out that pipe dream

lol at them snubbing his agents

    Deb ‏@LilMissNYJet
#Jets brass didn’t meet with DeVito’s agents at the Combine…. Does that count as “snubbing” too?

No. Only Revis snub counts. Nothing else.

No he has not actually asked for that figure at all. Pure speculation. Speculation that people in the "trade Revis" camp love to trump up.

Wouldn't Revises agents be actively involved if their were trade talks going on behind the scenes? A new contract probably has to be part of a trade, doesn't it? That means Revis would essentially have a "no trade clause" because he could refuse any contract.

And you can't get better by giving away elite talent

Why not? Our team is built and will be successful with defense. Our offense doesn't have to be elite for us to be successful. We have already proven that.

Aso wasn't nearly as good as Revis is. I'm not saying to pay him $16M a year. He won't get that on the open market either as it's unrealistic. But you can't just get rid of elite talent.

I don't know if it's Rex Ryan making the defense work, or if it is Revis having that kind of huge impact. If last year is any indication, I am willing to bet it is Ryan running the show.

In other words, Revis might not be what he once was, when he leaves the Jets.

Don't get me wrong - he will be good. But you won't see his name in 'The best player in NFL' talk any time soon once he leaves NY.

Rex Ryan is the mad scientist remember? He could take average players and make it work with this scheme. Why can't he do that with corner-backs? Most I would pay for Revis is 10M at the most annually.

These guys don't want to win, they just wanna make the most money. Last I remember, you don't get into the HOF by having the largest contract in the NFL. Revis needs to decide which is more important. He's already made a crap-ton of money.

i dunno, i just cant see the jets dealing revis unless it is a last resort where they cannot come to an agreement and so they must get what they can for him. i sincerely doubt rex is for it, and i hope that idzik also understands the rarity of a talent like revis. if anybody is honestly sitting there and telling me that during the course of the season there werent a couple of plays that cro let up that had you goin, 'revis wouldnt have done that,' then fuck me i dont know what else to tell you. revis is far and away better than anyone else at that position, and is arguably the most skilled player on defense in the nfl.

revis has gotten a shitload of money from the jets, and cannot afford to pull any stunts coming off of a knee injury. the jets are in an actual position of leverage in the situation for the first time, and everyone here wants to get rid of him cause they think hes gonna ask for 16 million dollars.

if he asks for that much, well, hes fucking delusional and no team will pay him that much. if he wants to retire a jet, he will take a long term deal that will net a lot of cash but not destroy the cap. i really doubt revis just wants all the money and to be on a shitty team.

Because cornerbacks are not as important as quarterbacks. End of story. To build an elite defense you need eleven above average players. To build an elite offense, you need five or six ... but one of them has to be the quarterback. It's not even a debatable issue.

I don't understand the greed factor involved in a lot of these players. When you are making 5+ million a year, YOU ARE IN GREAT SHAPE FINANCIALLY. You're set for life along with your grandchildren's grandchildren, yet that extra 10 million in your career is going to make a huge deal in the long run. It's mind boggling how over paid these guys are in the first place. They get paid to play a damn game. Nobody on the face of this planet needs more than a million a year to live comfortably. Beyond that it's living excessively. Heck, most people are just fine making less than 1/10th of that.

You never know. Human stupidity knows no bounds. Case in point? The guy Jets had for a backup role a little while ago - Mark Brunnell.

He hoarded in heaps of cash while playing for Jacksonville. Now, he's under - last time I checked, he blew most of his earnings in real estates gamble. You know, these athletes were gifted with physical prowess, but not all of them were given adequate level of mental acuity that even a normal, sufficiently-educated men are supposed to have.

I smoke the good stuff and can't comprehend the people running around saying "You MUST sign Revis" "teams don't lose players like Revis".....

Houston Just lost Mario Williams.... It happens. Teams look at what a player wants relative to the cap and it's a simple formula - We don't need to be Math Majors to figure out that IF Revis is looking for 16 mil off an ACL injury, it's NOT going to compute.

While that is true, being a failure at managing your finances does not indicate at all that they are entitled to or need more money. It's not a need, it's wasteful excessive luxury. Some people are just stupid as fuck and will go bankrupt whether they are making 50K a year or 50 million a year. You can't fix stupid. It still doesn't justify the money these guys get paid. It's seriously out of hand and the people that pay the price are the fans that can't go see a game with the family without dropping half a paycheck on it, while that half paycheck is equal to 5 minutes of field time of almost every player out there. The fans sacrifice a lot more to see a football game, while to the players money really doesn't change anything. Oh no. The guy has 19 cars instead of 20, and 9 houses instead of 10. He's only allowed to have 3 yachts! What a sacrifice!!!
