Double dipping at OLB

I see a better solution is to sign Barwin/Kruger/etc. and draft Jenkins in the second. We will be able to solidify our OL at 9, and maybe sign an OG (maybe one of our free agents, included in OG)

 

We need offense bad but defense still needs to be addressed with us losing some guys. I say go OLB in round 1 because that's where the talent is. I wouldn't really double dip, to many needs.

 

The new coach would surely feel an obligation to continue development of whatever young QB he inherits. At the same time, I'm hoping that he gets the opportunity to draft his own QB to have a chance to reboot the franchise under his coaching era. This would give the new HC 2 very young QB to try & develop.

Worst case scenario, Jets blow a draft pick. I'm willing to take that gamble to increase the odds of finding the next QB with a 3rd or 4th rounder in this draft. Tyler Bray in 3rd & Sean Renfree in the 6th then add Renfree to the practice squad? Jets will then likely bring in a cheap vet to prevent QB position from blowing up like last season. At the same time, it'll be a cheap vet who likely has low ceiling in long run. If the Jets are 4-7, I'd rather Rex go with some rookie QB with an NFL arm. Trotting out Matt Moore or defeated Sanchez is just going to make a depressing season even more hopeless for fans.

Don't get me wrong, I don't wanna "force it" & keep blowing picks on QB & lose out on the opportunities to add quality depth in other places on roster. At the same time, there are franchise QBs drafted outside of the first round. Jets for the first time in years (or maybe decades) will have an OC who has a history of successfully developing young QB talent.

Let's believe in our coaches & take a chance. Rex has a great defensive reputation. This defense lost Revis & still played strong pass defense & looked good enough to bring into the playoffs. Draft some talent but force Rex to hold this D together with some band-aids (for just one season). Give the new OC a shot to once again develop something decent @ QB.

 

i am all for old school defense so dipping the toe multiple times on D is fine with me.

that being said - u have to build a top flight D in this league with the offensive talent out there, in order to compete.

in a rebuilding situation - which the jets are in regardless of what they say, its more so than not the defense which comes around earlier then the offense. the exception being if u are lucky enough to land a bonafide franchise QB in the draft.

the jets already have a good D that can get to elite rather quickly - even without revis - with the addition of perimeter speed at LB and safety (assuming landry/bell go)

this is a decent LB draft - both in and out - so that plays into their hands.

 

Hindsight is 20/20. Let's say the Jets offense actually produces points next year and we did draft two OLB who were consistent, stuffed the run and got after the QB? You would be ecstatic. Draft the BPA and go from there, no matter what the position. We have so many holes, if we went after some WR, TE or HB in the 2nd round that was a bust we are setting ourselves back even further.

 

I wouldn't be opposed to the first 2 picks being used on OLB if they were the BPA at the time.

However, I would prefer it to be 1st and 3rd/4th and take an offensive player or two in between. Someone like Dion Jordan in the first and Brandon Jenkins in the 3rd or 4th

 

1. I wouldn't mind OLB x2 and safety at the top 4 rounds if it comes down to it.

2. NO REACH. These picks had better be BPA picks.

 

If they are the BPA and there isn't an enticing trade down option, then I don't mind the move. I feel like the draft day mistakes come when you draft to fill a big need rather than drafting BPA.

We have to score points to win, while having an all world defense is great and all your offense have to score points and recently lots of points to win, FIX THE OFFENSE. The last time we drafted high on offense we took a project WR in the second round and a project guard in the second round. We all saw how well that worked out.

 

We had a bottom 3 offense this year. We really need to start drafting on that side of the ball again. BPA round 1 which will probably be a OLB. After that we got to start drafting on offense. Skill players or O line it doesnt matter. We need depth and improvements everywhere on that side of the ball.

 

The only reason they should double dip is if an OLB drops dramatically. He'd have to be by far the BPA.
I'm hoping for one FA linebacker and then one at 9, then we can start focusing on offense. The only player on offense likely available at 9 that wouldn't be a huge reach would be Warmack, and I'd be okay with that. It all depends on free agency.

 

I'm sort of hoping:

1. Connor Barwin comes cheap.
2. Landry stays.

This will accelerate retooling the defense considerably.

 

Every pick BPA always BPA and nothing but BPA

 

I'd go OLB in the first. But in the second, if Gio or a good WR or TE or even OL is there we take them. If there is an OLB who is BPA by a lot compared to an offensive player (Gio, WR, TEs gone) then we take the OLB. This draft is filled with good offensive players in the second though.

It Geno is there at #9, I'd take him over an OLB, then take one.of those OLBs that are dropping because of injuries or whatever reason.

 

Seriously. People need to realize we won't have the 2000 Baltimore Ravens defense out there. We never will. Time to get some offense.

 

people also need to realize our linbacking core got gutted by offseason vcuts and both our starting safteys from last year are UFAs. We need to draft top end talent all over the place.

 

BPA is bs.

If when the 9 is on the clock, and the BPA is a CENTER or a CORNER..is that what you are taking. BPA has to balance with need.
