Yeah, I'd make the most likely people to cause a push for the 9 being Dee Milliner, Jarvis Jones (if the Jets medical staff just could not sign off on him) or Geno Smith/Matt Barkley/Mike Glennon with one of the early drafters trading up after they got their LT to try to get the QB also. If the Jets thought Jones was a healthy choice then he is a no-brainer is he's there. He has Lawrence Taylor type potential and you can't ignore that when your big weakness on defense has been the pass rush. Even if he's just a good NFL player he'll make an impact higher than anybody but a QB would. He's got 28 sacks, 44 TFL and 9 FF over the last 2 seasons playing for a powerhouse against some of the best competition in the country. If he's healthy he's the best player in the draft hands down.
If Nassib was available in the second round, I' be all for taking him. He is the kind if guy this team needs. He is very tough, has a strong arm for the New York conditions, and has the leadership qualities this team has been missing for so long at QB. I have a feeling the Bills are going to snag him right before us though. As far as free agents go, I'd be extremely happy with Paul Kruger and some low risk, high reward guys. Percy Harvin and Reggie Bush would cost way to much. We should look at guys like Bryce Brown and Ramses Barden.
We are reportedly moving to a West Coast Offense, and makes sense as we are bringing in a West Coast Offense Offensive Coordinator. The Jets do not have the offensive play makers to effectively run the WCO, outside of maybe Holmes and Kerley. Holmes is an explosive receiver that will rack up more yards after the catch than on the actual catch, and Kerley is the next JCo, IMO. Percy Harvin and Reggie Bush are home run hitters, and is what a west coast offense needs most. They can catch the ball anywhere, and be a threat to score. We have a Ramses Barden type in Hill, but Hill has more upside with this speed. Bryce Brown is a replica of Powell.
A spinal condition in the NFL scares the hell out of me, especially for a linebacker, or offensive lineman. I would love to have Jones on the Jets. I would just hate to be the person that pulled the trigger, especially if I was a first year GM. The contract for the ninth pick carries about $8 Million over 4 years. All we need is to have Revis acceleration and Jones acceleration if he get hurt year 1. Since we are in cap purgatory, I pass, and try to get value from teams looking to take the risk.
Jarvis Jones was nowhere to be seen against Alabama in the SEC Championship game he got steamrolled out of the Georgia Dome.
Perhaps, but that doesn't change the fact it is the same mold as Powell. If we could bring him and and release Powell fine. My point is/was that Bush adds an aspect we don't have.
Trade down, aquire a whole lot of picks by trading Revis/Cro and Tebow (say that rhymes) and get BPA. BPA BPA BPA Been saying this for years, this is how you build a Championship Team...BPA If you draft for needs, you will always be dissapointed and will always miss on the pick.
I understand your point, but Bush would just cost too much. I'd much rather invest that money in Landry and Moore/Slauson. Not to mention Keller, who we should really consider keeping around (great fit in MM's offense). We don't have the luxury of spending money like crazy. Bryce Brown wouldn't cost much, and he has the added boost of being very talented (#1 RB recruit in the nation out of HS). You saw what he could do in MM's offense last year in Philly. If there was anyway Bush would sign for a small contract, then hell yes I'm all for it, but chances are he is looking for his last big payday.
I'm for trading down and taking Dion Jordan. However the Jordan pick is not as a premium edge rusher but as the TE stopper. The guy did everything on D including covering the slot. Plus he was recruited as a top TE prospect and was converted to LB/DE in college. With his size and athleticism maybe he could be our answer to stopping/slowing Gronk.
Taking a cover guy just adds another point of failure in the defense. The Jets need a pass rusher who makes all the cover guys jobs easier. Trying to do this on the back end is just asking a good QB to find the guy who is a step behind on each play. Then you get into the fact that when your defense is built around 5 or 6 guys who can cover every injury back there becomes a big deal. When it's built around a great pass rusher the only thing that you have to worry about is the pass rusher going down.
