If the Jets take Geno Smith on the 9 they should keep Sanchez and have a real competition in training camp with Sanchez likely starting the season in the WCO. Then if he fails the Jets have Smith with some time to watch the NFL game coming in at mid-season. If Sanchez suddenly finds it, like Drew Brees did once Philip Rivers was looking over his shoulder, the Jets are more than solid at QB moving forward given Sanchez favorable contract for 2014 to 2016.
Man, I'm glad your not their GM, lol. There's no logic to that. If the Jets were to use the #1 for a QB, Sanchez will no doubt be booted. Why pick a QB #1 just to lite a fire under Sanchez's butt? That would be inane.
The logic is that you don't want to plan to put a rookie out there unless he's a guarantee in the Peyton Manning/Andrew Luck mold. If you take Geno Smith, who gives you no kind of guarantee of instant success this year, you want him on the bench the first half of the season. So given that reality you need somebody to install the WCO around but who isn't likely to hold the job, letting it go as Smith becomes ready to go. Going to get a vet to hand the job to for a year is a waste of resources when you're already paying Sanchez $8.25M/$12.58M cap. Let Sanchez have the competition with the rookie and if he wins it then the Jets are in a no-lose position. Either Sanchez plays well enough after winning the job to hold onto it or they have Smith in the wings waiting to take it from him. It's not the same thing as Brees/Rivers but it's close. There was no question the Chargers were going to give the job to Rivers sometime in the first season they had him but Brees just played lights out all year and grabbed the job on a multi-year basis after that. The injury and free agency sorted things out after that.
While I agree with this in principle (this is how Joe Montana was raised after all) I am against burning 1st for a QB if this is the plan. You must get day 1 contributors from 1st 3 round picks, if at all. If you are going to let the draftee QB sit on the bench for a couple of years, then that QB should come in 3rd round or later.
If we pick any QB with the 9th pick I would consider it a huge mistake. The talent for the first round is not with QBs this year but rich with LB, Lineman both D and O, TE, RB and WRs.
If that QB is Geno then its solid value. Players from 5-25 are all very similar in terms of talent. Its hard not to reach on someone in that situation. Geno is a top 15 player and presents value there. Just because the QB class is weak, it doesnt mean he's bad. He's still a top 15-20 player if it was last year in a good QB class.
Nothing against the kid. The situation dictates that either Jets let their 10+M investment rot on the bench or let the newly minted QB prospect sit on the bench for a year. Trust me. There will be good QB prospects next year and on. It is not like Jets must grab that Smith kid to ever sniff VLT. I would like to see Jets grab a day 1 starter out of first 3 picks if possible.
You aren't alone w/ this line of thinking..but I disagree. Certainly ability to contribute/start early should be a factor during player evaluation..but it shouldn't be the be all end all. The draft is about building your team for the longhaul..not about tomorrow. As soon as you start thinking in that "plug & play" mentality you've begun to sacrifice the "Best player available" mantra that almost always yields the best long term dividends. Now I understand it's not the 90's anymore. Things are much more short term in the NFL. Players don't stay w/ one team for a decade. That said..how often does depending on a rookie through 16 games at a key spot pay off? Rarely if ever. You end up plugging holes instead of building a roster. That's the Tannenbaum way of doing things.
Any QB in the first round is a reach this year. Not bad QB's and not bad kids but none are worth that high a pick.
Unless you are 1-2 players away you never use the draft to "fill holes". That's what got us in this mess to begin w/.
Not only that our biggest hole is QB. We aren't guaranteed a good QB in next years draft, so if a good one that fits our scheme almost perfectly is there this year, why not take him? Get Gio or any other RB who fits our scheme and the offense already sounds better. Our current WRs aren't bad fits for this system eather.
If the QB in question is a fit schematically, presents good value at the spot & there isn't an obviously superior player at a different position available..I am all for drafting a QB. I just don't want any more of the "filling holes" mentality. When you go that route you quite often sacrifice overall talent level, you put additional pressure on young players & you take away the notion of roster competition. Draft for talent..not need. The "Holes" will work themselves out in the process.
I seriously cannot see us taking a QB so high in this draft. There just aren't any can't miss prospects to go for and due to the fact that QB is our biggest position of need, I don't see the new GM wanting his name attatched, especially in his first draft,to a potential high round bust.
I wouldn't take any QB other than Geno at 9. If he's not there I'd trade thar pick and stock up on 2nds and 3rds.
Geno Smith would almost definitely NOT be the BPA on the board. We would be reaching positionally for him. Rodgers was a toss-up for the #1 overall pick, San Fran decided on Smith, and Rodgers dropped into the twenties. Completely different situations.
so perfect in its simplicity. this is my ideal scenario. especially when you factor in that if he is there odds are the pass rushers are gone. we really cant lose in this draft unless we make a kyle brady type pick
