It's another day and I'm not going to rehash the debates from the last one. I think it is pretty clear at this point that neither of us has enough information to argue the question of whether or not the Jets can restructure Revis existing deal via extension to make the voidable years less impactful. I'm just going to stay with the common wisdom at this point, which is that a $9M hit on the cap is coming due in 2014 if Revis departs.
Had an email to jump in on this one. I can tell you with 99.9% certainty that the numbers on my site regarding Revis are correct (its unlikely but possible they tweaked something in the last week or two) . The prorated numbers are 100% correct and accurate and are firm, meaning no tweaks will change them. The reason that the void is not considered in Revis' sole control is because there are multiple criteria that have to be met. In this case it is the fact that he must be on the roster a day after next years Super Bowl. He has no control over whether or not he is on the roster on that date as his roster status is the sole discretion of the team. That is why you see so many contracts void after a specific date, such as Richard Seymour's this past week. Teams have used this language for years just to allow for the proration of salary to continue into years that the player will not actually be under contract to the team.
Thanks for the input. Love the nyjetscap site, that's great work you do there and I look at it frequently.
I agree. I never said he wouldn't have the cap hit though. What I said was, based on the new information, I would have to believe he had no cap hit in 2014, and if it were true, how did it get by us? Anyway, fun talking it through with you.
Thanks for jumping in Jason. I really love the new site, and wish you success with your new project. Pretty simple loophole. It still seems as though he has the right to void a contract year. I would have to say that the Jets may void his years as well, leaving it not in his sole control. Do you have access to his contract, or getting this from a source? If you have his contract, I would love to see it. I am not asking for your source, but how do we/you know the information is 99.9% accurate. (I am not disrespecting you/site, or doubting you/site. I am strictly bored, since my company closed, and needed something to research.) As of right now, using the information provided by your site, and confirmed by other multiple sources, Revis has $12 Million in an unrealized cap hit. $3 Million will be realized in 2013, and $9 Million in 2014. If Revis is cut or traded the $9 Million would be accelerated, but what happens to it if he is resigned. (I am not considering the money to disappear in anyway, it is there and needs to be accounted for, just clarifying). Can this money be dispersed over the new contract? I would assume they could just offer him a new signing bonus, he pays back his remaining signing bonus, and prorate that. Since you know more about cap than anyone on here, what do you think the best possible solution would be if we were to a.) trade him or b.) resign him?
Cromartie surprised the hell out of me in 2012. He never held a candle to Revis' ability against the running game, but he was better than most corners when tackling and pursuing backs and receivers. Hobbes' persistent denial of his 2012 performance is strangely reminiscent of the morons that will try to claim that Cro was doing it all along. Dummy how people cling to an argument because they think their mental self-worth on a message board depends on it. Cro had a very good season in many aspects. Physicality was one of them. But he is still a 2B when compared to Revis.
I appreciate the effort you put into your site. I have referenced it many times. Plus, your content is a good read. Keep it up, tough guy.
Glad you noticed it too. I don't know what motivation I would have had for making something like that up
I would say, if Cromartie didn't have the season he had last year, there would not be any discussion of trading Revis.
I think the discussion on Revis is more centered around the Jets questions about whether they can keep him on terms productive for the Jets. It's interesting that there's no franchise tag possibility because I think if the tag was available it might well resolve the issue for the Jets. They probably wouldn't want to go the Al Davis route of tagging Revis endlessly until they got backed into a bad contract like Asomugha and the Raiders. They would however be able to trade Revis because the acquiring team would be acquiring two seasons at least, the cheap 2013 contract and the 2014 tag. Not having the tag available is what is making this issue so hard to deal with. That and Revis coming off of a knee.
Persistent denial of what performance? Cro....not hardly... And if you watch the tapes, Revis' presence against the run only comes when the runner is right at him, he's lazy in that respect...a runner in another zone routinely shows him watching the action.
Yes there would. He's trying to be a cap crippler..... Cro notwithstanding, this discussion should have been had a long time ago.
It really should have happened during the second holdout. The Jets could have had a huge package for Revis at that point and that's likely what they should have done. That's water under the bridge now.
I don't believe if Wilson was our #2 making peanuts compared to Cro, and having not having Cro play to the level he did last year, we would be having this discussion. Revis is worth his money (current money), IMO, if he is the only one making that kind of money. With the light of Aso, no one is going to give Revis QB money.
This is just getting too funny now.... http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/story/_/id/8959634/darrelle-revis-wants-answers-new-york-jets
I don't like how this is being handled at all. There has to be at least some chance that Revis could remain a Jet to maximize leverage. I wasn't optimistic about what we'd get for him before. I thought the rumor about Alex Smith for Revis and a draft pick was absurd, but it's starting to feel like that could be a reality.
I don't think the Jets can trade Revis until he's passed a physical. Not sure at what point that will be possible at this point since he's still rehabbing the knee.
