One of the best GMs in the game. Ozzie Newsome.

Last year, the Patriots restructured the contract of Tom Brady to free $7.2 million of salary cap space. Smart teams do that very seldom, because it can hurt future caps. Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome explained the reasoning why: “The only time we consider restructuring guys’ deals is if a player becomes available that we think has great value and is worth us restructuring the deal to get it done. It also has to be a player we think has a very good chance of playing out his contract. That’s when you get in trouble, is if you restructure the deal, all of a sudden the player’s abilities fall off the cliff and you have to let him go and you have to eat all that acceleration right away. We have a good nucleus of young players who are still under their first contract, which will allow us to not have to do that.” The Ravens redid four veteran contracts after their last Super Bowl victory in 2000, and it hurt the team in the long term. “We will not repeat what we did in 2001,” Newsome said.

If Idzik is smart,he will avoid restructuring contracts in the next few weeks which hurts the team in future years. If the Jets stink in 2013,then they stink. Tannenbaum saddled them with some bad contracts. Mr.T needs to get off TV trying to justify the contracts he gave out.

Again, the Steelers aren't alone. The New York Jets' top 10 cap numbers add up to over $110 million. Even if you eliminate expected cuts Jason Smith, Calvin Pace, Bart Scott, Eric Smith and Tim Tebow, the top-10 total still comes to more than $88 million, without accounting for the added dead money. The Dallas Cowboys have more than $90 million tied up in their top 10, and the New Orleans Saints have more than $88 million sunk into their top 10.

It will be very intriguing to see what moves Idzik makes in the next 4 weeks when the NFL league year begins.

There are more ways than one to win. Remember, baltimore didn't win a playoff game from 2002-2007. They've had a great run since Harbaugh and ozzie has done a great job overall but there are more ways to win than just one.

The article makes note that they restructured 4 contracts after 2001 and it hurt the team in the long run.

That's the excuse, they still had competitive teams but they weren't getting quality QB play in january.

What players did they lose b/c of cap issues?

Just as big an issue with the cap is who it prevents you from getting.

who did they lose and who did it prevent them from getting? Until we know those answers it's hard to say the restructurings really hurt them.

i like that philosophy. but when you draft well and have a good QB on the roster it's easy to not have to sign guys to bad contracts in the first place.

So do you want him to go through and research every single FA from the period 2002-2007 to show you who they could've had??

You can't just take the word a 2-time SB winning GM?!?!

What are you trying to argue anyway? Newsome himself didn't say the only way to win is his way - he's just revealing how HE wins. Considering they are the SB champs and our Jets are a mess right now - following a different path. Maybe it's a good idea to think about how they did things.

Well it's impossible to know that. My guess is they would have loved to have added a wr during that stretch. They lost Jamie Sharper to the expansion draft and cut Rod Woodson, Shannon Sharpe, Sam Adams and Qadry Ismail. They lost Duane Starks to free agency. Thats was just the 2002 off-season alone.

They had teams more than capable of winning it all numerous times in the last decade. I don't believe any cap issues prevented that from happening. I think he is using that line as a negotiating tactic.

all the guys they cut were old and at the ends of their careers.

as far as Sharper- you can't pay everyone.

They already paid Sharper but had to put him up because they were in bad cap shape. Even old vets have value. Woodson and Adams had strong campaigns with their new clubs the next season. ismail was their top wr by a good margin and Starks their top corner.

The Ravens gave up on Dilfer after winning 4 playoff games in 2000 including a Super Bowl title. While completing 59% of his passes something Mark has never done.

Ozzie never gets attached to players regardless of what they've done in their career. Loyalty should matter but for the most part that's a sound philosophy.
