You are a GM...what will you trade for Revis?

I could see the 49ers overloading a deal for Revis at this point. They're very close and it's too easy for them to lose a key piece somewhere and not get this close again for a long time.

One of the things that has really stuck with me over the years is the "One for the thumb in '81" slogan that Steelers fans had going that season. It took them 25 years to get that 5th Super Bowl ring.

    That's fine, we'll take a 1st, 2 3rd's, a 4th and a 5th.

I am not sure what point you are trying to make here. A team that does not score much does not need a strong D? The Jets would be better off without their best defensive player?

I concede you are suggesting that teams that are passing oriented face more pass attempts. I think there may be some examples of that, but I don't think that is a general rule or anything. Teams pass more when they are down by more than one score in the second half whether they are down for whatever reason, not only if the opponent scored passing td's, and also whether the score is 14-3 or 45-34.

But in any event Revis is also excellent in the run D. Unless an opponent is not going to put in a standard set with two wideouts including their number one in there, Revis has value anyway.

Against a standard offensive set, the Jets will merely invite a passing attack if they leave the opponent's best receiver in single coverage by someone of hte quality of Kyle Wilson, or worse. Revis will cover this man in single coverage, allowing the other ten defenders to better array themselves to stop the run. Without Revis in there, you either have to double cover their best receiver, leaving less flexibilty to stop the run, or risk inviting a pass attempt to their best receiver with your mediocre cb in single coverage.

I am suggesting it is not a simple tradeoff for several reasons and in several respects.

Look I have my issues with Rex Ryan. But he's still the HC, and the one part of his job he does well is fielding defensive schemes. And to use his phrase there should be no question Rex Ryan wants to have a back to the front orientation on D, with strong corners allowing for variety and flexibility through the rest of the D.

Hey if it happens as you laid it out then more power to them but I'm not holding my breath.

I think it's especially unlikely they get rid of Sanchez if the Jets decide to keep Revis since there's no way to get rid of Sanchez this year without hurting this year's cap number.

Next year would still be a big cap hit but not as big as this year, and not with Revis on the horizon.

    Hrmm...won't let me quote.

    All Well....

You guys may be right that the 49ers will be more inclined to make a deal given the outcome of the last 2 seasons...but I'm just saying that isn't their MO.

Then again it wasn't their MO to take a run at Peyton Manning either.

I totally see the 49ers entering the picture and seeing if theres a deal to be made, but I just don't see them giving up the farm for a guy they would likely lose after the season.

They've done a number of one year "prove it" contracts these last 2 years (Carlos Rogers, Randy Moss, Braylon Edwards, etc), but those were all low, low contract values.

I'm not saying for sure that they wouldn't go all in, but they typically stay away from those types of deals.

I guess I'm essentially saying they handle business much more like the Patriots than the Redskins. ;-)

Again, you're probably pretty accurate about the organization, and you'd know better than any of us (presuming you're a 49ers fan) about their MO.

Since you mentioned the Pats, I'll ask this: do you think the Patriots are/would be interested in Revis if available to them? Might they stray from their organizational norms for a player like Revis?

What if the 49ers are very interested in acquiring Revis -- so interested that they'd be willing to pay him big $, yet, they don't wanna overspend Draft picks on him, so they decide to wait until FA.

And let's say the Patriots (as well as other teams) are thinking the same way.

Fast forward to Revis hitting FA, having proven that he's returned to his pre-injury performance.

Would you want to compete with other teams, such as the Pats, in a bidding war for Revis? Do you think Revis would choose San Fran over New England?

My point is that the 49ers are so close, their window is still open, and - perhaps most importantly - they have enough Draft picks to dish out for him. Why not trade for him and acquire him outright, rather than competing with other teams, waiting, and hoping during FA?

Again...sorry...can't quote...must be because the account is new....

    1) Yeah, I'm a currently suffering Niners fan. That was ugly.

    2) I think the Pats might stray away, but not all that far. Making a move for the player AT ALL would be straying away...but they are always looking for VALUE. They seldom put HUGE money in a player not named Tom Brady. They almost never make blockbuster trades unless they are trading a player AWAY. They got Randy Moss for almost nothing and then traded him away for more than they spent to get him.

    3) If the Niners do want to pay the $$$ for him (which is a possibility since most of their young players are under contract for some time...tho Kaep will be a big one if he trends the way he has) then of course they would want to limit the options...but this doesn't really do that since they can't franchise him. They would still have to compete for him...the only advantage being that he knows whats on this team now.

    4) I absolutely think the 49ers would be willing to give up picks to get him this year. I totally think they'll be a player in this...I just don't expect them to offer a 1 and a 2. Would they offer Alex Smith? Certainly. Picks on top of that? Of course. Would they do it for picks alone (no Alex Smith)? Sure. I just don't think they would offer the package that you guys (the fans, not the team) are looking for. Could I be wrong? Sure.

One thing I know about being a Niner fan over the last 2 years under Baalke/Harbaugh...

    Expect the unexpected.

The Pats never pay secondary players, period. And that's probably the #1 reason why they haven't won the big one since 2004.

In their last 3 playoff losses, opposing QB's have combined for:

    730 yds, 7 TDs, 0 INT/FUM, 67% completion rate.

If I were the Pats, I would give up whatever it takes to get a player like Revis. Their championship window is only staying open as long as Brady is around, and they know that the clock is ticking.

The Pats would have to make the Jets an insane offer to get Revis. It will never happen.

I think we were only talking about the Pats because I said the 49ers front office behaves more like them than the Redskins...IE they don't give up lots of picks or huge $$$ for players.

I'd be stunned if the Jets traded within the division. Thats one of the reason I think the niners are a good fit...not just outside the division but outside the conference.

It just points out exactly how hard it is to win a Lombardi. The Steelers are one of the top three or four franchises in NFL history and have had only 3 head coaches in the last 42 years but they had a 24 year drought in that span.

Lets not forget how historically inept the Steelers franchise had been for generations prior to the seventies. Its only in our lifetime that they've been one of the top three or four. For a much longer time they were bottom three or four.

    There is hope for us.

My understanding (and I do not pretend to be a cap expert by any means) is that by trading Sanchez the Jets face a lower cap hit than if they cut him. And the cap hit of trading him in the scenario I laid out is no greater than if they keep him on the roster.

Let me just say here what the Jets do not want to face. They do not want to have Mark Sanchez be their Qb on Opening Day. They do not want to have the fans see him turn the ball over, as it is odds on he would do, and react accordingly, as the way to start the coming season.

If Idzik does not realize this, then there is no hope for him as GM. It's as simple as that.

This. I mean the offer would have to be extraordinary!!!!! And even then they Jets would hesitate.

  17. There are very few players in the NFL w/ the reputation/respect of Revis. All it takes is 1 owner to get a mancrush & we could be blown away w/ a compensation package. That's exactly what i expect to happen.

    Right on.

Additionally, despite the Patriots propensity to avoid the big splashes, a player like Revis rarely becomes available. Still, I think the odds are nil that the Jets trade him to New England.

However, if Revis hits FA, I think the Pats will heavily pursue him. And based on his holdouts, along with the contract quibbles between the organization and him, I can definitely see him wanting to stick it to the Jets, if given the opportunity, in FA.

Thus, if the 49ers want him, they shouldn't roll the dice by waiting until FA and risk losing out to another team (such as the Pats); instead, they should roll the dice now and acquire him for this upcoming season.

As I said before tho...trading for him this year only guarantees him for this upcoming year. He can't be franchised, so trading for him doesn't stop the Patriots from signing him in 2014.

If that were the case tho, it would actually be the Jets who would also have something to gain in that trade to make sure he remains outside the division.

i think popular belief is any team trading for him will want to negotiate a deal prior to the trade going through. so i dont think the 1 year rental is an accurate way of looking at it
