I think he's talking in a sense of being a football player, value of position not included. Damien Woody on the radio a while back said that Revis was the best football player he's ever played with.
Now you are discussing impact vs talent. The gap between Revis and the next corner in ability and shutting down a receiver is greater than the gap between any other player at their position and their peers. Revis is better at what he does/did than other players are at what they do. However, Revis is not at an impactful position so the in terms of affecting football games, he does less than most other players. It's a small distinction, but one that separates impact vs skill. Rodgers, Brady, Peyton crop of the QBs this year. Gronk ,Graham, Tony G, crop of the TE. Calvin, Fitz, Andre, crop of the WRs. Revis and who else when Revis was playing? Nobody, it's not even close.
I don't think anyone here genuinely knows the gap between Revis and #2 or the gap between the two best LBs.
Damien Woody also said you pay players big money that are closest to the football and pointed out that CB's are not.
It's interesting though that in Revis best season he was not defensive player of the year, instead another CB was given that distinction. There was definitely some politics involved, with Woodson getting leverage because he was a 10 year vet who had never won the award. Revis had a great season and was the big story all year long and he didn't win the award.
Obviously Damien Woody can't make up his mind then. I'm just going by what he said, no need to shoot the messenger here.
there is no way we get 2 #1's for Revis - he's a CB people. Not a qb. Sure he can take a WR out of a game but guess what?... most teams have another 1-2-3 or even 4 they can throw to. He's injured, a one-time-hold-out and has a rep as a malcontent in the locker room. 1 #1 at best with a possible kicker in a later round the following year. If anyone pays more their stupid and Im glad we took advantage of them.
a big ass BINGO. back in the day a 1-10 pick was going to kill your budget. now its like slave labor (clearly joking!!) and the value of a 1-10 isnt just in the guy but the cost savings to a team for the first 4 years.
Revis also runs into the problem of having his stats suffer greatly as most teams don't even bother to try and challenge him. Hard to get many interceptions/passes defended when teams won't throw the ball your way.
All you would need is 1 coach/FO to be convinced that having the best shutdown corner in the game is worth that much of an investment. Oh, wait, Rex is our coach
Revis had the 4th most passes sent his way in the entire NFL in 2009. That's the reason it was his best year by far and the one year when he really was an impact player.
The impact of Revis is equal to having one extra player on defense. Teams use elite corners on a teams number 2 receiver while they double team the number one. Revis takes out the other teams number one solo and does a better job than other teams do using a double team. His presence allows the Jets to do all their exotic blitzes and apply pressure without a pass rusher. In a league dominated by QBs a guy like Revis raises a defense by himself against elite QBs. This years playoffs has been a good example of defenses having no answer to elite QBs. Defenses have been shredded all playoffs. Revis' presence allows a team like the the Jets who have played 4 years now without a QB to compete in the playoffs. We beat the Colts in the playoffs because of the defense. Sanchez played one of the worst games a QB has ever played in post season history but the defense won the game. In wins against the Benglas and Chargers the defense again was dominant. Against the Pats the defense came through again with some help form some outstanding receiver play. Revis presence simply allows us to compete against playoff type offenses even when we have the worst QB in football. Revis is the closest thing to an elite QB as he makes the rest of the defense a lot better by his presence. Just as a good QB makes the OL, RBs, and TEs, Wrs and defense much better. Similar to how a bad QB like Sanchez makes everyone worse. Is he worth $16 million? It is hard to argue any CB is worth that much. But he certainly is worthy of being paid as the top CB by a healthy margin.
This guy gets it. We constantly here about other teams with elite pass rushers. Well, that didn't stop the respective defenses of JJ Watt, Clay Matthews, Von Miller, and Aldon Smith from being shredded.
That's pretty much a cop out answer. Most of the trade Revis camp believes he should get top CB salary. Top CB salary < Top Defensive Player salary. What if that's not good enough for Revis. Do you offer him 16M ? ...... yes or no
Are you implying that if JJ Watt, Clay Matthews, Von Miller or Aldon Smith was swapped with Revis before the season started that we would have seen two different teams in the Super Bowl? There's no sane GM that would choose Revis or any of these dominant front 7 players.
Realistically I see somebody with an extra second round pick and confidence that they could resign him be willing to give that up, nothing more unless they get a negotiating window to resign him before the trade gets finalized.
I'm not necessarily suggesting a swap. I'm trying to make the point that many of people seem to think that if you get a dominant pass rusher that automatically equals a dominant pass d. I brought up those names to illustrate when facing elite offenses, especially ones that are balanced, those pass rushers can be relatively negated; thus, exposing your secondary.
The most obvious trade partner right now is San Fran. Flacco shredded their secondary and they will be looking to swap for Smith. Don't be surprised if Cro or Revis is sent west.
