https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/01/28/ranking-the-2012-offensive-lines/4/ This is just for those who whine about the necessity of blowing up the team and drafting offensive linemen, among other nonsense. Want to make fun of nacho? Sure. The running backs? Definitely. Receivers not named Edwards or Kerley? No argument. It's just that the o-line's weakest point is Slauson's barely above average run blocking and when a unit's biggest weakness is above average performance in one of two scenarios from one of five players, you need to find another unit to criticize like slow linebackers who can't rush the passer or drop back in coverage, slow running backs who can't find the hole or make anyone miss, or slow receivers who can't get separation or catch terribly well. The Jets went 6-10 with their best player on each side of the ball injured, practice squad receivers, bottom of the barrel running backs, and a quarterback even ESPN has ranked 36 out of 32 teams. And the defense was somehow still ranked #8 with that offense dragging them down. Just don't blame the O-Line.
I don't think our OL was one of the best in the league but I do think it was MUCH better than 2011. We could win w/ that OL if we had some skill guys.
Mangold has been very inconsistent the past two seasons. I know he was hurt and missed some time last season, but he really hasn't been that good since the injury.
I thought the offensive line played pretty decent. The guard positions need youth and talent though. Austin Howard with off-season work should continue to be our RT for the foreseeable future (needs to get better at pass protection). Imagine Warmack on our line? :breakdance: Busting 20 yard runs with Powell all day. When you have to account for Vlad / Slauson and Moore then your play suffers. Just like Brick.
I don't think people have a problem with the overall performance of the OL. I just think most of us see that it could easily improve (even further, if you will) if we get some replacements in a spot or two. After a slow start, they became better as the season went on. The only true shitstorm was in the San Diego game.
This is exactly why we need to bring in offensive skill guys in this draft. The O Line is not the major problem with this team, not even close. Could we draft one? Sure. Do we need to draft multiple OL early in the draft? Hell No. However the lack of talented skill guys is the greatest weakness on this team (QB included).
we all have to blame someone in order not to blame mark sanchez for sucking. the ol gets a pass this year because the receivers were so bad. next year dont worry, in the cheeseman plays it will be the lines fault.
Sacks aren't always the fault of the OL. It all stems from lack of healthy weapons for the QB. When sanchez had no one to throw to he was forcing it in turning it over, w/ McElroy he was taking sacks. That wasn't on the OL.
Better QB play would make everyone on our offense look better. As a drafting strategy, I agree that we need to load up on playmakers in this draft. There is a lot of depth at WR.
I agree that too many here, especially Sanchez Fans, like to pretend the OL is worse than it is. But the #3 ranking does not address the issue going forward, which is that both starting OG's are FA's right now. I doubt Slauson comes back, and Moore is aging quickly. The Jets need to get another OG in there this off season. At least one.
Howard had some bad moments, but for the most part he seemed to be effective this season. I'd have no problem seeing him start at RT next season too... I wouldn't even mind seeing Slauson brought back if he's not seeking too large of a contract, but I doubt so Slauson AND Brandon Moore will return so at least one lineman will be needed though...
This proves it I don't think that the jets o line was bad at all last year DBrick is a tank as well as mangold this was howards first year and he did fairly well considering not much time with starters in training camp slauson is our weak link and moore is on the decline but still had a solid year I do think we should draft a guard early due to the FA (Moore, Slason) but i think vlad can step in and be a solid guard for us in the future
the line will return 4 starters. slauson will be back and wont be asking for much. moore shoule be gone.too old for the youth movement. i have no problem with ducasse moving in at rg.
The Jets o-line was good last year, but they weren't great. Howard's pass blocking leaves a lot of be desired and we still don't have even one good guard let alone two. Mangold can't double team to both the left and right sides at the same time no matter how good he is. I'm fine with the idea of getting better WRs and RBs. I like Greene, he can occasionally truck people and make people miss but he doesn't do it often enough. At WR, Hill is promising but needs to work on his catching. Kerley is good. Holmes is a lazy POS. Gates is decent but not a long term solution. Edwards is old. But who do we draft to replace them? We need a ILB to replace Scott and an OLB or two. We need a QB but clearly there's absolutely no QBs in this draft worth taking a shot at with an early pick. Eddie Lacy, Giovani Bernard, Marcus Lattimore. I don't recognize any other names on RB lists. I don't know any of the WRs.
Let Rex work with scraps on defense for the time being. He's a defensive guru, let's maximize that value while we finally invest on our offense.
