For a rebuilding team that is probably the right answer. They're both prime right now and will be post-prime in a couple of seasons. The Jets aren't going to get prime value out of their prime year next season because the rest of the team is not at a highly competitive level. The salary cap is very tight this year and will not be much better in 2014 if the high-priced CB's remain. There is a very good argument for dramatically flattening the cap in the same year that the Jets are forced to sacrifice the season due to both cap and talent issues. Then 2014 becomes the first year of a new Jets era in which the cap excesses of the last half decade are no longer a controlling force on the team's fortunes moving forward. It's tough to understand from the stand point of "Yahhhh!!!! Jets! Super Bowl!!!" But that era is behind us even if we don't deal with the cap and talent issues now.
Rex's scheme is predicated on having press man cover corners who can play on islands in single coverage. That enables him to bring 8 down in the box to stop the run. It allows him to be aggressive and creative with his blitzing. Darrelle Revis is the best in the league at playing CB how Rex needs it. It's hard to find truly good corners in this league. Every year high picks are spent on corners in hopes of finding that #1 corner, and seldom is that guy found. 2011: Jimmy Smith, Prince Amukamara, Patrick Peterson 2010: Patrick Robinson, Kyle Wilson, Devin McCourty, Kareem Jackson, Joe Haden 2009: Vontae Davis 2008: Antoine Cason, Mike Jenkins, Aqib Talib, Dominique Rodgers Cromartie, Leodis McKelvin 2007: Aaron Ross, Leon Hall, Revis 2006: Kelly Jennings, Jonathan Joseph, Antonio Cromartie, Tye Hill 2005: Marlin Jackson, Fabian Washington, Carlos Rogers, Antrel Rolle, Pacman Jones 2004: Deangelo Hall, Dunta Robinson, Chris Gamble, Ahmad Carroll These were allegedly the best corners available in those drafts based on the round they went in. Of course, you will always have the guys like Richards Sherman and Browner who come out of nowhere to be good players. But it goes to show how few shutdown corners there really are. All year we heard about how great Richard Sherman has been. Roddy White torched him in the playoffs. That has never happened to Revis. Stevie Johnson got him on ONE DAY, but other than that Revis has basically pitched a shutout every time. The only "shutdown corner" on that list is Revis, with Patrick Peterson approaching that territory. You have some good/solid players on that list like Antonio Cromartie, Carlos Rogers, Aqib Talib, Vontae Davis, Haden. But they're not even in the same atmosphere as a guy like Revis. I would rather pay Revis 15 million because I know he's going to completely lock down his side of the field. I'd rather have Revis and a guy on a rookie contract than have Cromartie and an overpaid mid level veteran at like $5 million per year. Trade Cromartie. Love him, but He's not consistent enough to be the player he was this year for the long haul. He's proven that throughout his career. He's much more limited than Revis too - he can't play so well against all the different types of WR's (big, small, fast, quick) like Revis does. Sell high on him. And Revis should have been playing in 2 Super Bowls in 09 and 10. If he had an average QB on offense, he's in 2 Super Bowls and probably wins at least one of them. The Jets problem is not that they have too much money tied up at CB. It's that their QB is absolutely abysmal. He's a bottom 3 QB in this league. He's the reason you are "cap strapped" You're stuck giving a guy who can't even play better than a 7th round pick like McElroy a ton of guaranteed money to continually turn the ball over and lose games. If the Jets had a QB like Jay Cutler instead of Sanchez, they'd be in the playoffs every year contending for the Super Bowl like the Ravens have been the past few years that they've had Flacco. No one would be bitching about being tight against the cap because the team would be winning. Now that the team has had two bad seasons in a row, everyone has to come up with this "revolutionary" explanations about flawed team building, how the you can basically find JAG's to throw at corner as long as you have a good front, etc.
I'm really not opposed to a cap/roster purge, even if it means 1-4 wins next year. I'd be okay with one abysmal season as long as there is a clear, long term plan for success in place for the future. I don't want them to half ass it, hoping for 5-8 wins the next few years (and with luck, making the playoffs) instead of a longer, smarter plan which could involve them being a perennial contender for 10 years when the cap situation is fixed. I feel like now is the chance for the organization to change for the better. The end of the Brady/Belichick regime is in sight. I'm praying for once, the Jets become the organization to replace them for a decade, dominate the AFC East and maybe, compete regularly and even win a SB.
I get why people don't want to trade Revis. The Jets drafted him. We seen him blossom. He is the best at what he does. HOFer. To many fans, letting him go is feels wrong. Leaves a bad taste.
I totally agree with this approach, although I do have some reservations. I understand we've got a new GM, but it seems we are keeping the scouting department in tact. I have no confidence in our scouts, and intrusting them to build a team that can be a perennial contender is worrisome. Having low,or an abundance of draft picks is great, knowing what to do with them is another thing entirely.
Wouldn't you like a first run, first...? This team is about two pieces away, and Mevi$ isn't one of them. You finally got an OC, you're returning Holmes,Edwards,Kerley and Keller, Austin Howard is a year more polished, so your OL is in tact, and the D was dine last year.
How do the Jets avoid the 2014 $9 million cap hit? That's going to be a big issue and probably be the deciding factor if he's worth trading. I thought the hit goes through IF he's not on the Roster in 2014. I'm not sure if it only involves him being a FA or not. Strange deal by Tanny.
I just looked it up: "Under the summary of the agreed terms (and open items) reviewed by the NFLPA* Executive Committee and board of player representatives on Wednesday, the length of the contracts (four years plus an option in the first round, four years in all later rounds, three years for undrafted players) now mandatory and with the compensation largely fixed, there isn’t much to negotiate." The fifth year is a team option.
The more i thin about it, I hated the idea at first but what happens if we bring Revis back and he never loos the same again because of the injury??? thats a big possibility no one seems to be talking about. Not everyone is Adrian Peterson. I think if we trade Revis we will get Landry and Bell back, Landry,Bell,Cromartie and Wilson doesn't sound to bad, but it doesnt have the same ring to it without Revis's name in there. Just makes me mad that we will never get to see those 4 guys together
the scouts are locked in till april. all scouts across the n.f.l have contracts that run till after the draft. anyone who thought j.idz was going to clean house in the scouting dept. right away was mistaken. he may not want all these current guys but the guys he might want are under contract with other teams and they are not going to be released 3 months before the draft. btw, the jets scouting dept is highly regarded through out the league.
so apparently this entire story was just a baseless rumor started by jason laconafora and discussed ad nauseum for 56 pages here when in truth there never has been any concerted effort by NYJ to trade revis at all. Just another example of why reports of rumors based on information supposedly from unnamed sources is worthless. as for the scouts, the NYJ scouting dept. is highly regarded.
Do you have any information suggesting it was a baseless rumor or are you just stating your opinion? Sorry if I'm going with La Conafora over random poster on TGG.
This isn't a baseless rumor. Baseless rumors come from either Mehta or Cimini, not a good NFL insider.
In a perfect world your right, and if Revis will resign this off season the trading him becomes a moot point, obviously you keep him at that point. But, The team can not play the 2013 season with Revis not under contract for 2014. If they do there's a very high probability that a team with lots of cap room signs him and the jets are left holding an after the third round draft pick and a 9 Million dollar cap hit to boot. Look at it this way, the Jets trade him this off season, and he doesn't resign with his new club after 2013 season the Jets can always enter the bidding process on him with a clean slate on the cap.
