No way in hell they draft another USC QB this close after the Sanchez debacle. That said, Barkley is the antithesis of Sanchez. He pretty much started from Day 1 on campus. Yet he'll never be a Jet.
And as I was reminded recently, Syracuse plays in the Carrier Dome. No to another USC QB that will find northeast winters to be uncomfortable to play in.
Well that makes for a better argument, although the northeast winter wasn't bad this year until just after Christmas.
That game was in September I think so I don't think we can base anything about Barkley on that game. I'd personally pass on him. I tend to think you want a QB with a chip on his shoulder... look at all the elite guys and outside of the Manning Brothers all of them seem to have some sort of chip or didn't go to big time programs. Brady - 6th round pick, has something to prove Ryan - went to BC Flacco - went to Delaware Eli - had to live in his brothers shadow Brees - was forgotten about in SD so they drafted Rivers Big Ben - Miami .....of Ohio Rodgers - slid to what 25th in the draft Even the next tier of guys... RGIII - Baylor, Schaub sat behind Vick and went to Virginia, Rivers - the Giants disaster on draft day, Cutler - went to Vandy Then you look at all the "big time" programs and not too many of those guys succeed USC - Sanchez, Palmer...no USC QB has ever started and won the SB The U - no quality QB's since Vinny and Kosar Florida/Florida State...no great QB's Texas- I can't name the last great QB to play at Texas Oklahoma - none come to mind Nebraska, Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Penn St, Notre Dame...all big Zeros I want our next strating QB to have had to face adversity, not be coddled, have a chip on his shoulder, not been handed everything. Obviously it's not an exact science as you have guys like Locker, Gabbert and Fitzpatrick didn't go to big name schools and aren't tearing the roff off although I think in the right situation Fitz could be a good QB.
Who would you rather have: Barkley or Glennon? Watching senior bowl practices, I absolutely hate Glennon. Sure he's tall, but so tall that he can barely move his feet off the ground. Too lanky. I believe that in the present day NFL you need to be at least a little bit mobile. Glennon's Madden speed would be in the negatives. I'd honestly much rather take a shot on Barkley. Better footwork, very accurate and has a lot of games under his belt. Just my opinion.
good post. i have been thinking about this for a while. it seems the better qb's are coming out of the smaller programs nowadays.i wonder if some of this not having the elite weapons around them like the alabama's and usc's do. these guys don't have the luxury of the wr beating there guy by 3 steps and actually have to be more accurate and make good decisons.i think they come in more prepared for what open is in the n.f.l
I think that might have something to do with it and guys like Locker and Gabbert just ended up in shit situations. Like I wonder how good Locker would be if he was with say the Falcons or Texans. They'd have elite weapons and good OL's. \ I think you nailed it though, probably the lack of NFL Talent around some of these guys forces them to be better QB's. Or in the case of RGIII he's just a freak of an athlete. Think about it, Brady goes to Michigan, backs up Brian Griese plays a little but is never amazingly good. He is a competitor and also has a chip on his shoulder for backing up Griese and the falling to the 6th round. He ends up in the perfect situation and all of a sudden he's a legend. Then you have Matt Lienart, has it all handed to him, Golden Boy, wins the Heisman, plays with elite college WR's, an elite college OL and Reggie Bush. Was benched by a team that ended up in the SB. His weaknesses can be masked by the elite talent around him at USC. It's not maksed in the case of Flacco because he is the team, he is the guy that makes the talent at Delaware better. His weakness can't be masked. You can even go back in time Montana - played at ND but dropped to the 3rd round very similar to Brady except he didn't back anybody up Marino - played at Pitt, draft stock dropped because of drug allegations Elway - Stanford when they sucked Phil Simms- not elite but played at Morehead State Brett Favre - 2nd round pick , played at Southern Miss Otto Graham - went to Northwestern Terry Bradshaw- Louisiana Tech Johnny Unitas - Louisville As an experiment I looked at all the QB's to ever start a SB and some of the schools will blow you away Purdue has had 3 QB's start and win a SB... Brees, Bob Griese and Len Dawson Navy has had a SB winning QB in Staubach 2 QB's who played at Delaware will have started the SB after next week, Gannon and Flacco Jake Delhomme went to Louisiana-Lafayette NE Louisiana (now ULM) had Stan Humphries Youngstown State had Ron Jaworksi start a SB Think about this... no QB from USC, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, Auburn or Arkansas has ever won or even started in a SB Only 1 QB from Penn St, Florida State and Florida have started the SB and the last Alabama QB to start in the SB was Namath
what does past history have to do with anything? none of those sc qbs were matt barkley. i dont know what he will be, and i wasnt terribly impressed by him in college but to say he wont be any good because there have been a bunch of guys who have come through the same college and they werent that good makes no sense to me.
I would rather we wait to take our franchise QB in 2014. draft someone like Denard Robinson in the later rounds, who could play QB for us in 2013, then receiver in 2014.
All the QB's in this years draft have question marks on them. Me, if I'm going to roll the dice in the 2nd or 3rd round on a QB make it a pack that has a very high ceiling, but also a high bust potential, and if it's a bust pick a QB in the 2014 draft rinse and repeat. For my money, it's Bray. He does suffer from some accuracy issues, but having watched ALOT of his games so far it looks to me like 99% of his accuracy problems come from poor mechanics, but even with the poor mechanics he has a very strong arm. If you can coach him in to better mechanics he's got star written all over him as a pocket passer. But, there's a big bust chance as well. A lot about him reminds me of Mallet who the Pats picked up last year.
If Barkley drops to like 4th or so, maybe I would roll the dice. Before that, don't even think about it.
God No. No to Barkley at all. Enough with the USC QBs. He's not falling past the first round because he's too hyped us as a HS player, but no way I want him. His arm strength isn't great, and the physical tools just aren't that great. I don't want to spend a high draft pick for some guy that is a game manager and someone who may turn out to be slightly above average. That was exactly the problem with Sanchez, the upside wasn't great, although his floor wasn't supposed to be as high as Barkley's. Also benefiting from a great group of talent around him helps a lot. If you look at past college recruiting lists, all you see is USC all high on the lists, so they have quite a bit of athletes on the team that can just dominate the lesser players. As 1968 mentioned, I actually like Bray better as a prospect and as a better value. He is inconsistent, and is a gunslinger, but man does he have an arm. To use a baseball saying, he has easy velocity on the ball. He could be backpedaling, and throw it 50-60 yards down the field. I also like Manuel, as a project as well.
From what I've heard, Bray is uncoachable and just generally a bad person. Not someone I want on this team.
The perception this year is that, this year is a bad year to draft QB. That can work in two ways: 1. The few with perceived 1st round grade will get drafted real quick. 2. Other than these selected few, they will slide all the way down. So, which side does Matt fall on? I don't know that. Different teams have different needs, and their board set-up is different. Still, I see a real chance of Barkley sliding out of 3rd round. (At which point, you should roll the dice, should the chance present itself.)
I don't understand why anybody thinks accuracy issues can be reliably fixed in the pros. The guy has been playing football for 7+ years and he has accuracy issues. Why would a change in coaching reliably fix the issue? The trick to getting a great QB is to find a guy who hit all the right numbers in college and then surround him with enough good players and coaching that he can make the big step up up to the NFL without having his performance suffer badly in the process. I don't want anybody who had performance issues in college as the Jets next QB. Even if the issues were solvable by coaching that just means the Jets have extra work to do before the guy is at the same level a good QB is at entering the league. And good college QB's fail to make the move to the NFL work for them most of the time.
