Johnson to explore trading Revis "The New York Jets, fresh off an exhaustive hunt for new general manager John Idzik, will explore options to deal star corner Darrelle Revis this offseason, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. Revis, whose contract voids after the 2014 season, is set to earn $6 million in 2013 (between salary and bonuses), and owner Woody Johnson has strong reservations about the ability to extend Revis's deal, the sources said. Johnson has expressed his desire to attempt to land value for Revis now, rather than risk losing him as an unrestricted free agent a year from now, most likely seeking as much draft-pick compensation for him as possible. The Jets are very much in transition mode, they have cap issues moving forward and are trying to embark on a rebuilding process after firing former long-time general manager Mike Tannenbaum. Revis, who missed almost all of last season after suffering a torn ACL, engaged in a long holdout in 2010 that resulted in a contract extension that was more of a Band-Aid than anything else. Revis signed a seven-year deal then that voids to a four-year pact, thus making him an unrestricted free agent after the 2013 season. The deal also precludes him being hit with the franchise tag or any other such mechanism. Johnson has made it very clear he would like to pursue a means to reap rewards for Revis now, sources said, and it is likely to be an immediate part of Idzik's initial job duties. Revis is considered by many to be the best defensive player in the game. And with pass rusher Mario Williams earning $60 million guaranteed from Buffalo a year ago, Johnson understands how financially restrictive it would be to retain him. His team desperately needs young, cheap, impact players to help reposition the team for the future, with 2013 a year of transition. Revis is the only real trading chip that he has. Knee injury or not, there would be no shortage of teams interested in securing his services and no shortage of rebuilding teams sitting on massive cap space in 2013. The Jets are also likely to be hard-pressed to retain free agents like tight end Dustin Keller, running back Shonn Greene and defensive tackle Mike DeVito, though they will make a push to retain DeVito, the sources said. Getting Revis signed to an extension would be a possibility to trying to remedy this situation, but the sources said Johnson has established his desire to move him if he can secure fair value in exchange. Dealing Revis would incur a $9 million cap hit due to some option-bonus prorations involved in the contract -- thus Revis would count an additional $3 million against the cap than he is currently scheduled to -- but the Jets could navigate that relatively easily according to sources familiar with their cap situation, via a restructuring or by releasing a veteran. The team is using 2013 as a year for cap and budgetary housecleaning, to get situated for the future. It stands to reason that come 2014, both Revis and head coach Rex Ryan, are gone. As I said in other thread, Idzik will trade Revis. It will be best for the future/long-term health of the franchise. Get some value (draft picks) while we can.
Not a fan, but I don't see why it'd be worth complaining over if we somehow managed to get fair value. Big "if".
backfield not to shabby without revis. But the playoffs you really going to want a revis for sure. What kind of draft picks we looking at
If were getting rid of Revis for the thought that paying him would be to much (around $14 mil a year) then we might as well trade Cro too. He's making $10 mil next year, and who's not to say that he'll want Revis money? I still think that this would be a mistake.
It is absolutely the wrong move. It is not even close to being the right move unless they land a massive haul. To be clear, a single high first round pick does not come close to approximating Revis' value, even given that it will require a large contract to keep him. Darrelle Revis is the holy grail of football properties: a player so valuable that he is single-handedly capable of making one's team legitimate. When he is healthy, he is the best defensive player in the NFL. Considering both sides of the ball, only a handful of quarterbacks are more valuable than he is. If every other player on the Jets were average, Revis would make them a clear playoff team. He is incontrovertibly a franchise-changing player, and if you're on board with the above opinion then frankly, you have been spoiled by or have grown numb to his greatness. The NFL is not the MLB. You don't blow up a team to build for 3 or 4 years down the road. Well-orchestrated roster recalibration requires 1 to 2 years of work, and it is quite common for NFL basemen dwellers to win their division the following year. The NFL is a dynamic league. Long-term "Big Dig"-type reconstructions should be reserved for markets with less volatility. Put simply, you do not trade Darrelle Revis for the sake of the future because Darrelle Revis is the future. Revis is 27 and is likely to have at least 4-5 more years of almost incomparable value. Revis should be the centerpiece of any future plans. Any notion to the contrary is a tacit validation of Woody Johnson's being cheap. It is not an expression of sound roster management. Pay him.
It's obvious if you read the article that they have no intention of paying him. They have been through his shit too many times. If they can trade him, great. If not they will lose him for nothing at the end of the year. Either way he won't be back after 2013, the Jets have way too many needs to pay him what he will want.
Smart move...You can't tie that much money up on 1 player when your team has so many needs. Plus Woody probably is pissed off at going through this whole contract BS again...Can't blame him. Remember he did tear an ACL...he won't be the same player.
Cause getting rid of both is a smart move... You keep the one that isn't going to cause contract issues...
when was the last time a Super Bowl team's success was dictated by having a shut down corner? he's great to have if you can build around him. unfortunately, Revis' demands will make it impossible for the Jets to build around him, so signing him hurts the Jets more than trading him helps.
Laconfora is pretty well connected. My guess is a 1st and a 4th is what they would get. I kmow it's not value but he's coming off an injury and is looking for a qb type contract
As always, it comes down to the money. We don't have enough of it to satisfy Revis unless we want Revis to play 8 positions on defense at the same time. We all knew it was going to come to this and I applaud Woody (wonder of wonders) and the Wiz if they can pull this off and for once, get something of value in exchange. Usually, we let our UFA's walk w/o comp so this does represent a siezmic change in how the Jets go about doing business. They keep this up, and I'll have to change my signature. I wonder what Rex thinks about trading his centerpiece. I hope he doesn't go into Cryin Ryan mode.
First of all, it just says exploring options, not that they're definitely going to trade him. However, everyone who's saying "this is the right move" is forgetting just how unbelievably good Revis is. He's a top five player in the NFL, and unless they're getting that type of value (such as what the Rams got for the RGIII pick), they shouldn't do this. Since they won't get that type of value coming off an injury-plagued season when Revis' value is at his lowest, they need to keep him and keep building around him.
