no, hill's speed isn't rare the whole package is rare but there are plenty of guys with his speed. and hill is going to be a player. wr takes about 3 years to develope, only on jets message boards are they dismissed after on mediocre year
If our offense isn't set up for WCO at all what will we do...? Build around to make one which will be difficult and take forever or make MM change his ways.. This offseason will be very interesting I have no clue what will happen.
The 49ers 2012 first round draft pick WR AJ Jenkins (talented but a bit of reach in the 1st) hasn't even seen the field. He would have been our #1 WR after Holmes got hurt.
I was talking about right now. He can't play like the poster I quoted professed. I'm sure under the right coaching he can develop into a good maybe even great player but at the moment he's a project. Also, I said he did not have rare "talent" but rare speed. I could have added that he had rare size but that's not a talent. He doesn't have other rare talents like body control, hands, elusiveness...etc., just rare speed.
Really what? Did you just see the name Santana Moss and assume I just said Stephen Hill = Santana Moss? You seem to have reading comprehension problems.
Just saw this. No reading comprehension problems, just perplexed by the comparison of Hill's rookie season to Moss'. You wrote: What I remembered was that he got hurt in training camp and miss like the first 10-12 games. Then when he came back he was buried in the depth chart behind Coles, Chrebet, Hachette and some other scrub whose name escapes me at the moment. Unless you are talking about the occasional punt returns, I don't think he even got the opportunity to play let alone drop passes. I remember complaining every Sunday once he got back about Moss not getting any burn and telling my buddies that he was probably the best WR on the roster. I know it's probably blasphemy but I use to say to my friend that Moss was better then Chrebet in Pee Wee, Pop Warner, High School and college then he should be better than him now. Maybe you went to the practices and got to see him drop passes there.
Even if it was true that Moss dropped a lot of balls his rookie year trying to run before the catch, there is no comparison to be made. Moss catches the ball with his hands away from this body. Hill often tries to trap the ball against his body. It shows he lacks confidence with his hands. Guys who catch the ball like that are proned to go through spells of the dropsies whether they are running before they look the ball in or not as the ball tends to ricochet off the pads.
You're arguing points I never made. Quite simply, Stephen Hill has on several occasions began turning into a run before the ball was secure in his hands. My comparison to Moss ONLY was in this regard. There is 0 correlation between hands catching and body trapping and what I'm talking about.
our roster wasnt void of starters.. it was void of depth and that's what we should address first and foremost
That's a fair point, but I disagree that he doesn't fit the WCO. When you have a player you think can be a difference maker (especially with Hill's package of size/speed/potential), you find a way to get him involved and make him fit in your offense. Yes, a lot of the WCO is typically predicated on precise route running, and guys being more quick than fast and being able to separate quickly from coverage. Usually because of the suddeness/quickness needed to run these short routes over the middle, the WR's are generally smaller and can cut on a dime. But that doesn't mean you can't have a big WR that gets vertical and is a good red zone target. The Eagles have actually been looking for a bigger/more vertical WR. There were rumors of them going after Moss in 2008 after his contract with NE was up, and then they supposedly made a post-retirement offer to Moss in the summer of 2011 to try to get him to come back. They've also been linked to Plaxico Burress for a few seasons. I wouldn't say that either of those guys are particularly great options for the WCO Philly had. Both are big, longer striders who make plays vertically rather than horizontally most of the time. These guys can't stick their foot in the dirt and cut crisply like a Greg Jennings or Percy Harvin can. Even Desean Jackson isn't the greatest fit in Philly's WCO. Yeah, he's smaller and quick as lightning but he has little interest in subjecting himself to the physical play that going over the middle requires. So many of Jackson's catches are vertical deep ball strikes for big chunks of yardage. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one on here who still thinks Hill can develop into a very good WR for us. It feels like people have just been waiting to hate on this guy ever since the draft. They'd almost rather see him fail than develop into a good WR.
Hill was brought in to be a deep threat, play action isn't required for that, and who's to say we won't still run play action at times? He can still be a deep threat plus he's a good blocker as well. It's not like those 2 aspects no longer matter with West coast offense.
