I know we have a lot of these being posted to the forums, but I've been working on this and feel like its a solid one. Although I think like a lot of people may say I neglect the offense too much, I went with players I felt like could be a dynamic fit based on the round. As for WRs, I see the Jets re-signing Edwards, and think Holmes-Hill-Kerley-Edwards-FA/Gates/White/UDFA will play out. As for OL, probably should take someone, but also see them re-signing one of Moore/Slauson and inserting Ducasse at the other OG. I think Austin Howard proved to be a starting caliber RT and will only get better with more reps and a full off-season and training camp. Let me know your thoughts. ------------------------------ Round 1 - Dion Jordan - OLB - Oregon Although he only had 5 sacks this past season, he has a rare blend of size and speed and could be great coming off the edge in Rex Ryan's defense. He was also asked to drop into coverage often during his time at Oregon and showed to be more than capable at it. NOTE: If Jarvis Jones falls to #9 and his spinal stenosis checks out, he's the pick here. With that said, if his medicals check out, its highly unlikely he lasts till 9. Would also ideally like to trade down, just not sure who would trade upRound 2 - Tony Jefferson - S - Oklahoma I think Jefferson is going to shoot up draft boards as the off-season goes on and the draft approaches. He has a good blend of size and speed and showed to be solid against both the run and pass while in college. He would be a great guy to add to our CBs and one of Landry/Bell (most likely Bell)Round 3 - Marcus Lattimore - RB - South Carolina Assuming his recovery from (a second) knee surgery goes well, he is a great talent and could be the type of running back Rex has been looking for. However, he doesn't have a ton of experience catching the ball out of the backfield which is important in the West Coast Offense. NOTE: If his medicals don't check out, then Stepfan Taylor is a great option as wellRound 4 - Brandon Jenkins - OLB - Florida St. Before suffering a Lisfranc injury, he was a prospect on the rise projected to go as high as the first round. However, now the most recent film to go off of is his subpar Junior season and he won't be able to participate in the Senior Bowl. Depending on how he performs at the Combine, he could be a great mid-round pick if he lasts this long to add more speed and youth the the LBers; with him and Jordan working to replace Pace and ThomasRound 5 - Zach Line - FB/RB - SMU I don't personally know much about him, but here's a blurb from an SI article "He's a large, hard-charging ball carrier with terrific vision and football instincts. Adept at carrying the ball as well as catching it, the 230-pound athlete is averaging 4.8 yards on 235 carries this season and has 31 receptions. Line offers potential in the NFL as a feature back for a power running game or fullback in a west coast offense."Round 6 - Tyrann Mathieu - CB - LSU The Honey Badger might have been a fairly high draft pick if it hadn't been for his off-field issues. He would come in and could become our PR and a nickel CB - he blitzes well and is good at diagnosing screens. Also, its been reported that he has been counseled by Revis since his dismissal from the team, which -depending on who you are - could be viewed as a positive or negative (I view it as a positive) Round 7 - Luke Willson - TE - Rice Has great size at 6'5", 250-lbs but didn't put up great numbers due to lack of production and injuries. Would definitely be a project pick, but in the 7th round its worth taking a look because of his size and speed (4.7 40-yard dash). He performed well in the 2013 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl (3 rec, 46 yards, 1 TD) which leads me to believe his lack of productions could have been a product of the offensive system at Rice - which I admittedly know nothing about.------------------------------ UDFA - Sean Renfree - QB - Duke Has prototypical size for a QB at 6'4", 225-lbs. He would be a project pick, and I think will last to UDFA, especially after tearing his pectoral muscle in his last game. Would be a great guy to stash on the Practice Squad for a year while developing him and seeing what he can do. Also, David Cutcliffe (who coached both Peyton & Eli in college) is a big supporter of Renfree...UDFA - Erik Highsmith - WR - North Carolina Decent size at 6'1", 190-lbs and adequate speed. Why not take a flyer on him and see what he can do. Ended his career at UNC 3rd all-time in receptions.UDFA - Ryan Spadola - WR - Lehigh Set a Patriot League record his Junior year with 1,614 receiving yards, and had 11 touchdowns on 96 catch. He has pretty good size and speed, measuring in at 6'3", 200-lbs and clocking in at around 4.42-4.5 in the 40-yard dash. Good route runner and solid hands as well. He's a local kid from NJ, wouldn't surprise me if Eagles are interested as well since he's from Lehigh where they host training campUDFA - Josh Boyce - WR - TCU He set the TCU record for receptions this season (66 rec, 891 yards,7 TD) and all-time TD record. He has already gotten his degree and is leaving school early. With the success the Jets have had with Jeremy Kerley, I'd be very open to the Jets taking another TCU receiver hoping to get a good one again. Also, his size and speed seem like they would translate to the West Coast Offense well
I'm afraid you're going to get hammered. No O Line, No drafted WR??? Two huge omissions. I love Jefferson he's a player that is going to be a starter in the NFL. Also, IMO, Sean Renfree is going to be drafted.
Matthieu will prob get drafted in round 3-4 because of skill alone. 3rd might be a little early for Lattimore because of injury concerns and we need some offensive line help. Solid draft though.
Pick by pick: - I'm cooling on Jordan. He's got great height but I'm not sure he has the bulk and strength to hang in against the run. - I like Jefferson a lot but I think there are bigger needs that have to be addressed. - Waaaay too early for Lattimore. Huge question mark. - I like Jenkins a lot but he'll definitely be gone by the 4th. - Line is a nice mid-round prospect that would fill a role. - Mathieu will be long gone by the 6th - Wilson is more of an H-back, which you essentially fill with line in the 5th.
nice dwash, but 3 of those top 4 picks have injury issues Besides Lattimore's 2nd season-ending knee injury (before he's even in the pros) and Brandon Jenkins, there's also Dion Jordan to consider at #9. Jordan injured his shoulder (labrum) back in October vs. Colorado and while he returned to the lineup, the guy many saw as the best pass rusher in college didn't record a single sack in his last 5 games. Further, I hear he's sitting out the Senior Bowl and will be undergoing surgery on his labrum. Chance Warmack et al look to be injury-free and NFL-ready to go
I think the Jets are in a bit of a pickle at 9. It's not a really good place to pick in this draft, especially with the needs you guys have mentioned (3-4 OLB, RT, OG if Warmack is already gone, WR.) I don't think Jones, Moore, or Werner makes it to your spot so you end up reaching for a guy like Jordan, Ansah, Mingo, or Okafor. I think Lattimore in the third could be a little bit of a reach, but if you want to make sure you get him that's probably where you have to take him. Actually, I'm sort of talking myself into it. Brave pick, could end up being a very good pick. Look at Frank Gore's history. IIRC, he went in the third after a nasty knee injury, and that worked out OK. I agree with TCGF here... Jenkins is more talented than a 4th round pick. If he makes it here because of injury, would be a steal. Looks kind of risky, though, as three of your first four picks have injury concerns. I think Zach Line is a very good pick for a WCO FB this year. Trey Millard would have been ideal had he come out, but he isn't. Who knows when Mathieu will go in the draft. Your guess is as good as any. Another option in the 7th for a TE could be Jake Stoneburner. CBS seems to think he is a fringe draft prospect, but he was a cluth go-to guy for Ohio State the past couple years and can run away from guys. He could be a good asset/mismatch in WCO multi-TE sets.
TheJetsBlog just posted a mini scouting report on Luke Willson, figured I'd post it in here since I had him in my mock... NFLPA Collegiate Bowl 2013: Luke Willson Luke Willson Tight End – Rice 6’5″ 250 pounds Scouting Report: Willson is athletic, has great size and is a willing blocker and was an impressive pass catcher. He was the most consistent tight end at the Collegiate Bowl in terms of getting separation, and could either stay around his current size and work with a team as a potential “F” tight end or add a few pounds and be used more as a “Y” tight end. While Willson’s receiving skills might need a little polishing, he’d be a good prospect for a team to try and round out for the NFL game and could be a versatile player. Notes: Willson was probably the one player in the whole game that impressed me most. The Rice Tight End struggled with an ankle injury in 2012, which severely limited his production. Playing at Rice, Wilson is at a school that doesn’t get much national attention He’s played in the Blue Jays organization as well been drafted by the Toronto Argonauts. snagging three catches for 46 yards and a score. Wilson was in the discussion for MVP of the game, an award given to Kansas QB Dayne Crist. ----- EDIT: Just came across this link saying Rex Ryan was in a 3-car accident in Bethlehem, PA a few weeks ago; which is where Lehigh University is (one of the UDFA I mentioned)... Probably is completely unrelated, just found it interesting
I'm worried about missing on OL. I guess the line of Brick, Vlad/Slauson, Mangold, Moore/Vlad, Howard is okay. But I would like some help there from the draft, even if it's just a backup for depth. Our OL is thin already and we are letting Moore/Slauson walk and taking one of our backups and plugging him in. I can't speak about players individually, but overall missing on OL is worrisome to me. WR is not that big of a deal because I think Hill will come on, Holmes is good as much as we don't like him, and Kerley is nice in the slot.
I agree - I actually originally had him in the 6th but decided I wanted Mathieu instead and had already done that mini-write up in Boyce so I threw him in the UDFA section of my post
Like jordan but would rather trade down for Warmack also Jefferson is a great prospect but i think there are more pressing needs such as O Line and playmaker on offense (WR,RB) Lattimore will be but not right away because of injury and is also risky Love the Zach Line pick a lot of good FBs out there
If Marcus Lattimore isn't able to step in then Jets could be entering next year with even less talent on offense then previous season. Keller/Greene/Moore could be gone. How about keeping Lattimore in the 3rd but reaching for an OG/OT or WR or TE in the second? Improves the chances the offense won't be so bad that it'll flush away the entire season.
What are the chances Lattimore is even coming back? That injury was gruesome. Is there some news regarding this somewhere?
