This has been a hot button topic in DC for a while now. Many are calling for the name to just be shortened to "Skins". http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...ble-and-really-offensive-heres-how-to-fix-it/
After the way they folded their tents against the Seahawks, they should change their name to the squaws.
yeh, they should. unless you think it would be appropriate if the jets changed their name to the ny jews...
That should be entirely up to the Redskins organization and no one else. I remember a few years back, the NCAA tried to get Florida State to get rid of the Seminoles name. The Seminoles tribe then sued the NCAA for obstruction of commerce as they had a business arrangement giving Florida State University permission to use the name. The NCAA then ducked their collective heads behind their tails, and allowed Florida State to use the name, thus the tribe dropped the lawsuit.
1. It's the other way around. 2. Don't give Woody any new idea on how to sell PSLs 3. I think it's actually a compliment to native americans... if you put "redskins" in your name it's becasue you want your team to be associated with the positive values rapresented by the native american's culture.
In most of these types of cases I'm against changing the name but in this particular case I think it's high time this happened. George Preston Marshall, the original owner of the team, was pretty much an avowed racist and that probably had something to do with the nickname.
The nickname originated when the franchise played in Boston. They've never been too keen about the colored folk up there.
every team should only be named for inanimate objects so as to not offend tall people, hard working blue collared men working the steel mills, Greek Gods, etc.
the point is that calling a team the redskins is no different then calling a team the jews, or the niggers, or the spics, or the towelheads, or anything else. its not a compliment.
Doesn't this come up at least once a year and usually around this time when people are bored waiting for the superbowl?
Are you kidding me? There are few racially specific terms to call Native Americans that are worse than Redskins. The team was the last NFL team to integrate and allow black players to play. They were founded by a well-known racist. The term Red Skin is not harmless by any means and they do not have a good reputation to fall back on in that department. The only reason this issue doesn't get more attention is because Native Americans are an extreme minority (and whose fault is that again?) This isn't about extreme political correctness. I think the real issue is that people don't understand that it's an offensive term because most have hardly any experience with Native American people.
