My ideal plan is to trade down, either in the 1st or 2nd round. However, I wanted to do a simple mock draft for my first of the year. 1. Jarvis Jones, OLB – Georgia The neck could be an issue, but if that checks out, the Jets would now have the best pass rusher in college football. He isn’t as stout at the point of attack as you might hope for, but if he just adds a few pounds of muscle, he’ll be better off. When it comes to getting after the quarterback, he is a fast, agile and explosive pass rusher who is relentless and has a knack for making big plays. Pass rushing problems would end right here. 2. D.J. Fluker, OT - Alabama Wanted to grab a lineman high. Almost pulled the trigger with Warmack in round 1, but I couldn't pass up an elite pass rusher that high. Fluker could be a big help to our offensive line, and Howard could shift inside. I wanted to get at least one lineman early that we can plug into the lineup with Slauson and Moore most likely gone, and Fluker does that. 3. Stepfan Taylor, RB – Stanford Really like some of these running backs in the mid-rounds. Taylor is a three down back and he's a very good blocker. He's a better version of Powell, and I look at that as a good thing. 4. Travis Kelce, TE – Cincinnati May be a stretch to put him in round 4, but I really like Kelce. Good size (6'5, 265), good speed, was impressive in the Belk Bowl. I think he can be our tight end of the future, and a nice weapon for whoever our quarterback is. 5. D.J. Swearinger, S – South Carolina Good speed, good coverage ability and very physical. Sometimes plays too recklessly, but I think his hitting ability would be a great fit in our secondary. 6. Kerwynn Williams, RB - Utah State Another running back, but given Joe McKnight's lack of success so far, we could use another playmaking running back to compliment Powell and Taylor. Guy just makes plays. 7. Bruce Taylor, ILB – Virginia Tech With Scott, Pace and Thomas all likely gone, taking another LB wouldn't hurt. He could be a good fit inside in a 3-4. Thoughts.... * So many good pass rushers going high in this draft, will be hard to pass them up unless we move down. * Don't really see any offensive guards I want in round 2. At running back, I like a lot of guys, but I think we can wait a round and take one in round 3-5. * Not sure how sold I am on the early tight end prospects on being elite, even though I would love to get a tight end early. I do like Kelce a lot though. * Jets have a lot of needs, really hope they trade down. Could grab some nice prospects in rounds 2-4, particularly at the skill positions.
Big fan of this approach. If one of the elite pass rushers is available (and trading down is not a viable option) we have to pull the trigger, that has been a weakness on this team for far too long. Also love going o-line in the second, as well as picking up Taylor. I personally love Jonathan Franklin (UCLA Alum), but not sure he can carry an every down load in the NFL. Overall I'd be very pleased if it panned out this way
Jones scares the hell out of me. The talent is there, but for how long. Fluker weighed in very heavy at the senior bowl, but also has the second longest arms. He'll end up in the late first though. If he is there it would be a great pick. Taylor was another supprise at the weigh ins at 215 pounds and only 5-9. Again this is another guy I think you undervalued as I see him a solid mid second type pick. If dion Simms is there in the fourth he would be my guy at TE, Kelce is another good option though. As for the pass rushers, that may be our ticket to trade down this draft. As much as I would love a Jordan or Ansah, we really need extra picks to help build a competitive roster this year.
Nice effort. I'm still a big Jones fan, if he clears medically he will never last to #9. Fluker is gaining ground, especially with today's weigh-in. He was in good shape for 355, and he's losing weight. I'm still concerned about Fluker in pass protection, he's a great run blocker. Been liking Taylor for months, both Taylor and Jones were in my 1.0 Jet's mock last Summer. Taylor needs to be an outside player, he's more effective breaking plays outside the tackles, good blocker and receiver. Travis Kelce is another player that I expect to move up the boards, very good receiver. I've seen him live at Nippert Stadium in Cincy last fall, a definite NFL TE. I'd like to see a West Coast WR in the mix, a player like Conner Vernon would be a good option.
He looked good at SB practice today. Maybe Rd 3, he's got NFL slot receiver written all over him. Always makes plays, great hands.
I think that would be a very good slot for a guy like him. If we have not gone WR by then I would love the pick.
^ I would LOVE Quinton Patton... Would be excellent fit in WCO. Almost identical to Reggie Wayne in term of ability and measurables. If he could reach that potential is a different story though, obviously.
I like all the players you targeted. Only issue I see is there's a very good chance Fluker is the 3rd OT off the board and could go at the end of the first round.
Excellent mock. ** I have 1 coming out w/Fluker in the 2nd and Kelce in the 4th. Jarvis Jones is dropping & could very well be there at 9 due to spinal stenosis concerns. Unfortunately, I think we might have to steer clear as well.
like most of the picks. Jarvis is a good player but I still have my worries about him, and Im not as high on Fluker as most are.
Like Fluker a lot Taylor or Bernard or Jamison or Bell or Ball or Lacy one of them needs to be on this team I agree if simms is there take him over kelce Jones is a risk but huge upside and this health concern might not even effect his career
Kick out the 2nd RB and take a WR who has punt return prowess in round 6 otherwise I like the needs you hit for us. We made NFL history with the amount of fair catches we had...we need an exploder.
I'd rather spend that second rounder on a quarterback to be honest. At least as of right now, no one is high on this QB class. If Geno, or Barkley (I know no one likes him) is available in the second I think he is better than Fluker for this team. I want another year of Austin Howard.
I would hope Howard could shift inside. I'd prefer to draft a guard, but I do think improving the offensive line in general should be a goal.
I like your draft, but believe I would rather take a QB instead of the first RB (if the potential is there such as Dysert) or a Guard instead of the second. There are always a ton of decent UDFA RBs every year.
