When healthy, I think we have an above average unit. Not many teams have 4 starting WRs. If Hill can justify his draft status, this unit can be our strength (assuming they are all healthy). Problem is, each n every WR in there has injury history. Im pretty sure we had Clyde Gates start a game or two due to injuries. That tells u more than u need to know. Gotta resign Edwards. I hope Idzik (sp?) likes him.
Whoever's saying we don't have a need at WR seriously lost it. Holmes probably won't be the same, Edwards is getting older if he is still even good anymore, and while Kerley looked promising he didn't even have that great of the year. If we're stuck with Sanchez again next year we're not going to do any better unless we can get him at least one more legitimate weapon. I think it'd be alot smarter to sign a WR and draft a rb then the other way around.
I think after all that Braylon has been through, the Jets could definitely get him on the cheap. I don't the team should waste a 1st or 2nd round for a receiver, but anything between 3rd and 6th would be a good time. Looking at the corps as I see it, I would say it's average at best. Holmes is coming off an injury and a year older. The hope is that Hill will hold onto the ball more. I like Kerley as a slot recever. Gates is speed and that's it. I went to the Seattle game and I all I remember is that when Richard Sherman was covering him,he locked him up without even trying. IMO the receivers corps is a work in progress and he needs to be upgraded.
Bray is a vert minimum deal -- no one will offer more. Hill had knee issues and holmes foot -- Edwards played with fire and was productive in the game he played with the Jets and Sanchez. He is also good for hill 0-- same size and had drop issues -- Can be an asset if he can mentor him.
There is no reason to think Holmes won't be 100% next year. His injury isn't like an ACL/MCL where you have to question where he'll ever be the same again. Agree on Edwards. With that said I'd still take him back at the vet minimum. Kerley had a fine year considering the QB throwing to him. He is already a terrific slot receiver, however, asking him to do more would be a stretch. Hill is the biggest unknown of the group. If we have a solid #2 then there is no reason he can't thrive as the #4 guy.
I've said this before, signing Braylon would be solidifying our WR corps and hopefully allow us to address our RB situation, which I feel is a more pressing need.
N one is saying there ISN'T a need. We're just saying that there are more pressing needs on the team than WR right now. If a great prospect is there between reds 3-6, then take him. Otherwise, we should be looking at other positions to fill.
Our WR's are pretty good right now. I'd add one more in the later rounds to be safe, but that's it. We should be able to sign Braylon back on vet minimums.
Idont know if this has been mentioned but keep the same wideouts and finally get a good tightend in here instead
Keller is a decent TE he just isnt a blocker which is why 4 out of 6 inside running plays go for 4 yards... Greene is slow though.
No, we really won't have money left for free agents at that point. We're going to be barely double digits of cap space available and the cost of getting more cap space will be to put us in a bind in 2014. I don't expect the Jets to sign any tier 1 free agents this year.
Yeah, Holmes is vital to our passing game. Did we honestly expect Sanchez to light it up with Hill, Schillens, Gates and a rusty Edwards? I don't think WR is a huge need, but it is a need. I think we should bring in another guy who has a similar skillset to Holmes, that can compliment him and run deep routes until Hill gets where he needs to be. He could use a mentor. Homes - Hill - Kerley will be a decent unit. I believe that getting rid of Keller will be a huge mistake if they go that route. I don't see Braylon coming back. He was a desperation pick up late last year, although he was decent, catching all kinds of bad passes from Mark that almost got him killed. Personally I'd bring him in as #4 or #5 if we could (the price will be right), but we do need another WR that can start opposite Holmes on the outside that we don't have to worry about dropping tons of easy passes, even if it's just for a year or 2. Edwards might be able to be that guy, but he's still a question mark at this point. If he can return to 2010 form, I'd be very happy. I wouldn't mind adding somebody like Percy Harvin.
No one expected Sanchez to light it up. I, and Im sure many others as well, expected Sanchez to protect the ball and simply be a "game manager". Its his 4th year, he should be able to take the offense by the horns and turn it into something worth while. Our expectations of him are so low that we want him to just not turn the ball over. A good game for him would be 200 yard, 58% completion percentage and 1 turnover... Sadly, thats reality. If he could put up those number, we consistently, we wouldve made the playoffs. As for this thread, I dont think we should be thinking in terms of position, but more so playmakers. Thats what this team lacks tremendously. As much as some people will praise Holmes, he's nothing more than an aging #2 WR right now that can make some very nice catches. Hill is a complete unknown. I would just consider him a #4 WR. And thats being generous. Kerley is a very good #3, but thats about his ceiling. If we are in position to draft a playmaker at good value. You do it. If he's a WR? You do it. This group is most certainly not built for the long-haul and since we are most likely (or should be) in rebuild mode, WR is definitely a need. It may not be an immediate need, but it will be in a year or two. Wouldnt you like to finally draft for the future and have a vision so that when we draft our franchise QB (hopefully in 2014) we have a solid young group in place for him? I sure as hell would. If someone like Nuk Hopkins, Tavon Austin, Cordarelle Patterson, Markus Wheaton or Quinton Patton are available in the 2nd or 3rd round and present very good value, you draft them without a doubt.
Agree 100%. We need to draft and develop dynamic skill players. Kerley and Hill are a start. I agree that Holmes is an overpaid WR2 at this point in his career. Other than that, it's a bunch of JAGs. There is no depth. One injury and we are stuck with Clyde Gates. If there's a better QB available, draft him, and if there's a better RB available, draft him, but don't foreclose drafting a dynamic playmaker on the false assumption that we are all set. Good teams develop players at the skill positions. Look at GB with Driver, Jennings, Nelson, Jones, Cobb. Look at the Giants and Nicks, Cruz, Randle, Barden, and Hixon. They can absorb injuries and have guys who can step up when someone is out. Of course, they have viable QBs, but the fact remains that they have invested in playmakers even when it wasn't perceived as a pressing need. We should do the same using a BPA approach.
Our wide recivering core are the who's who of practice squad player's except for ,ya have Clyde "Practice Squad Player on 31 other teams" Gates in the slot,i wonder if that could fit on his jersey,Stephen"Throw me the ball so i can drop it" Hill, Braylon"Cut By Playoff Teams"Edwards Chaz"What the fuck am I doing here" Scheilnz and SantonioHolmes the only legit player we have , Kerley is good to, So we have 2 WR's
If we get some OL help I have no problem going into 2013 with our current crop of WR's, RB's and TE's. Just get a goddamn COMPETENT QB in here, and a OC who has a clue. With our defense, we don't need an explosive offense to win. We just need an offense that doesn't constantly leave points on the field for us, and giftwrap points for the opposition.
We need an explosive offense. The Jets can't be looking to score 400 pts and settling for 375 when the Pats are going for 500+ every season. Yeah, when Brady is gone that will change but right now the Jets need to be looking to score on something approaching the level the Pats do. We keep getting blown out by them once a year because their offense is twice as good as ours and that's not all on Sanchez.
Jets will need a quality WR coach before WR depth. If whoever did magic on Braylon (I think it was Henry Ellard) tags along and helps Hill out as well, having Hill and Edwards on both split end will help a ton for the entire offense. Nacho sucked big time - but having WRs dropping the ball all season long like they did this season was not helping Nacho one bit. Either Sanjay Lal is a dumb fuck, or Sparano is a moron (or both - this is my vote in fact.)
