It's the only way we could fit him under the cap. Even at the vet minimum he would get more than 700k and we won't have even that available for a WR. We would have to sign him to whatever and defer most of it to other years.
Not if they bring back Edwards to mentor hill -- Holmes, Kerley, Hill, and Edwards (vet minimum) would be fine. That also frees up money for TE/RB/OL. Address WR in the draft/FA next season. Focus on other pressing needs this off season.
As another poster said, the top priority is obviously QB this offseason. We don't know how the Jets are going to handle that but most likely via FA with a Matt Moore type. Also maybe with a mid round draft pick. However I would hold off drafting a QB if there's nothing that stands out and using this draft pick to address another need. After QB, would be RB. We need a dynamic RB as we have no true gamebreakers in the running game. Then OL. Then LB. After that I would say safety and then WR. So WR is pretty far down the priority list IMO.
Of course they need recievers, I'm stunned as to how people can say they don't! Hill at the very least is unreliable. Who knows as to the type of player they will get in Holmes next season. My guess is a slower version of the 2011 disgruntled Holmes. Braylon is past his prime and everything. He should be the 4th WR. and Kerley is for the slot. Either sign a vet or draft a reciever early again- only this time draft one that can catch the ball. Rounds 1-3, QB, RB, WR; not necessarily in that order.
QB is big but you aren't going to find a new franchise QB. You can bring in a former starter now a backup - Matt Moore, Chad Henne, Drew Henson isn't coming after last season, Jason Campbell. A legit #1 RB would be great or at least someone to match with Powell that has the ability to break a play for more than 12 yards. Revis is going to be the big story line once again in the off season
I don't really see the team going after a WR early in the draft. There doesn't appear to be any Calvin Johnson/A.J. Green/Julio Jones crazy elite prospect this year and with the Jets needing to fill a bunch of other holes, using an early pick on a WR doesn't seem smart.
Hill, is a rare talent. And can play. Holmes is fine as a 2, with Kerley in the slot. Keeping Edwards is key. That said, you can take a late round flyer on a physical talent.
It wouldn't hurt to add to our WR core BUT I think we have bigger TE/OL issues to address in the draft and if we can give whoever our QB is more time it can help the WR. I also want to see more of Jordan White
You can get some value late at WR. I don't think the Jets have the talent at WR to run a modern NFL offense at this point. Holmes is a solid 2 but he needs somebody to take the top off the defense on the other side. Hill is a coin-flip and if the flip comes up Jets he's going to be good not great. Kerley is a good slot receiver. If Edwards has anything left at this point he's a solid depth guy. An injury to any of those guys would leave the Jets with issues next year, so would Hill busting out. Edit: left off another important fact - Edwards is a free agent and he's one of the guys the Jets are going to have to let go and then try to get back as a bargain basement signing in June. He's a decent bet to be there though.
With Hill effectively a project, you are correct they need receivers if the object is to contend for a playoff spot come the start of the 13 season. But since I think it will be ridiculous to consider the Jets as contenders in 13, they might as well let Hill get a lot of reps. If he can't develop, better to find out in a rebuilding year. I therefore like a top three of Holmes (who again I understand has to come back given his contract), Kerley in the slot, Hill at #2, and Gates as the backup. Also, in regard to some others talking about Edwards being a mentor to the younger playes, I like his personality more than Holmes. But I also hear nothing but praise for Holmes's willingness to work with the younger receivers. He can fill that role.
I think the the WR corps with Edwards is fine considering our QB, RB and OL situation. I think with a correctly orchastrated offense, and with a revamped OL we could be competive.
I'm not saying we have an elite unit... but it's an average one. Considering that a good part of our team is below average (especially on O) I think we should focus on improving those areas. Plus a good TE and a good OL would in turn help the WRs as well, wouldn't it?
If we resign Braylon Edwards, Holmes comes back from his injury 100% and with Kerley, we can bring along Hill slowly and keep Chaz as 5th receiver, we'll have a pretty decent receiving corp. Not great, but better formidable. Our pressing needs are OLB, QB, RT, RB, TE and FS
Your kidding right???? We have a big need at WR, These guys aren't big playmakers and aren't real deep threats. Edwards is overated ,Holmes is good but not great,Kerley is decent and Hill sucks,Why not look at a Josh Cribbs or Greg Jennings in free agency. We need to move on from the past with this Braylon Edwards shit he's been useless on two other playoff teams and cut before the playoffs 2 years in a row but for some reason everyone wants this guy. Well i no longer do I want new faces at WR im sick of our guys we need new faces fresh faces
Because we really don't have a lot of money to throw around in FA and have much bigger needs on the OL, TE, and RB to spend draft picks on.
Once we cut Pace,Smith,Scott,Jason Smith,Tebow and who ever else and we let Landry walk we will have money to make some moves, Look around the league at the teams left in the playoffs, Look at all the playmakers they have at WR we have Clyde Gates,Hill and Schilens and Kerley
Screw need we should draft BAP. If the best player is a WR, take him. Our WR core is weak and Holmes may be gone within two years.
