Under the (not improbable) scenario that we re-sign Edwards for cheap (he played well and with a purpose in the final games of the season) we'd have: Holmes - Kerley - Edwards - S. Hill Should we take a flier on a prospect if he falls to us? Sure. But having so many needs I wouldn't draft a WR in the first 2, 3 rounds of the draft... nor would I make WR a priority in FA. There are many other areas in which major improvements are needed... for example @ TE where I'd be happy to spend our 2nd rd pick (hopefully one between Eifert and Ertz is available). PS This is also considering we won't be able to trade Holmes and get rid of his massive contract. If that were to happen, I'd be happy to bring in another starting-caliber WR.
Agreed. When healthy, it's at least a league average unit. Not to say it can't be improved, but it's not a position with a ton of FA possibilities and it doesn't seem like many guys fit our draft value wise.
I agree as well. With the addition (hopefully) of Edwards going into next year, that will help our run game again. Look for a prospect in the late rounds if possible, but not a need.
We need OL's and TE's before anything else. Obviously QB is our biggest need but this is not the year to be spending an early round pick on a QB.
I think for now a group of Holmes, Edwards, Kerley, Hill and even Gates is a solid corp of receivers. I wouldn't draft any receivers this season but in '14 I would draft a receiver or two to develop for a year or two so that when Holmes and Edwards play starts to decline we have young guys on the roster ready to step in and play.
I agree too. The RB position needs an upgrade but I think WR is fine for now while we rebuild the OL and LBs. Let's see what Hill does next year with a new OC, a more reliable TE and better overall play around him before throwing in the towel...lots of potential.
Hill is still a complete unknown. He has the tolls but had year long injury battles and low production. Holmes is still the most talented of the group, even if he is an Asshole. How much longer is he around, one year, maybe two? Edwards is not under contract ATM. Even if he was his production and injury problems mirror that of hills for the last couple years. He is far from a stable answer at this point. Kerley may be the most consistent and reliable of the group, but that's not saying much given the group. He is a good player but not the type to scare a defense. This unit screams average at best and at worst a repeat of last year. If one of the top WR prospects falls to us in the second I would not hesitate to grab them. It would help next year and fill a long term need. That is what the draft should be all about.
It's very hard to judge the ultimate viability of our current receiving corps based on this past season for two primary reasons: 1) We were missing our best WR for most of the season. (I know people on this board hate him, but Holmes is clearly our most talented playmaker) 2) Most importantly, we didn't have a competent NFL quarterback this year. How many open receivers did Sanchez either overthrow/underthrow or fail to see altogether? The number 1 need on offense is quarterback. Once we get a competent quarterback in place, it will be a hell of a lot easier to see what's what regarding our receivers.
Glad you added Gates in there. He did some good things this past season. In fact although I have liked Edwards in the past, I don't see him being brought back for anything much over the vet minimum. The logic of the Hill pick last off season was that he would have to play his way into being starting quality. If one assumes next season is a rebuilding year, there is no reason to take plays away from Hill and give them to Edwards. Kerley belongs in the slot, and Holmes's contract, as I understand it, means he will be back, so there's your top three wideouts next year. Gates can back them up, and that leaves Edwards at 5 as someone who cannot be given much money.
^This. Despite some contrary opinions, our WR corps is not the worst in the league talent wise. It's an average unit with potential to be above average if we can find a decent QB to get them the ball. Holmes has never been fully utilized the way he should since he's been a Jet. Hopefully the new GM/OC realizes this and implements a good gameplan to complement his ability. Kerley, Holmes, Edwards, Gates and Hill(jury still out on Hill) makes for a solid unit.
I agree with OP. QB is biggest need, followed by OL and TE. Re-sign Braylon, maybe use late draft pick on a WR that can contribute to ST. In 2014 maybe draft a WR, as hopefully we'll have cut Holmes and who knows if we'll still have Braylon. With so many other needs, and Holmes still here for now, i'd put off any big move at WR for a year.
yes the receiving corp needs to be upgraded. the unknown of the 2nd round pick is one thing but the fluff that comes with holmes is another. in a perfect world - holmes not getting hurt and behaving; 600 yards from ur second round pick, and 700 yards from kerley - that would have been great and u can say it is a strength but the jets are not in a perfect world right now, as we know. we know who edwards is and he should be with the team next year. he does have a presence on the field and is productive - with a good QB.
We have no money to sign Edwards unless it is a multiyear backloaded deal and it was those deals that got us where we are now. Any new GM doing those probably wouldn't last a year.
he's been released twice in the last year, he's not signing for much(by NFL standards), of course we'll have enough if we want him.
We didn't pay much for Edwards this year (no one else wanted him), I don't know why he would demand a lot of money next year. Although I thought we gave him a 2 year deal? The last few games of last season and next year? No?
I'm not doubting that Edwards may not be back with a new GM, but why in the hell would he ONLY come back for a long-term contract when he's been taking 1yr contracts from other teams for the past 3 years? We're probably going to offer somewhere close to vet min for 2yrs. If he doesn't take it, we move on. I really don't think he's got much leverage in negotiations.
Sounds about right. He may test the waters. That would mean not signing him right away, and potentially losing him if a team overspends. You know while he tests the waters, fan base here will all be calling for the new GM's head.
I don't think the Jets will even enter 2013 with the intent to rebuild. Not with the SB in our building. Also I think the Jets handled Stephen Hill wrong, they should have signed a viable WR last season (Edwards) and let Hill develop at his own pace. Instead they made him the 2nd receiver when he wasn't ready for that role, and it blew up in their faces. Just like Kerley proved in '11 that he was capable of getting more playing time, if Hill shows us something in his limited snaps then you could have raised his reps. This season is a chance to hit the reset button, and handle Hill the way he should have been handled in the first place. Let Edwards and Holmes be the number 1 and 2 receivers with Kerley in the slot, and Hill at the 4. If he shows improvement then obviously he would trade places with Edwards.
