Renfree is probably going to be a UDFA. It's very possible that taking him in the 7th or even 6th round would be a good lottery shot.
Every time I've watched duke I come away a lot more impressed with Conner Vernon than Renfree. Your review makes him sound like the best QB ever, but I don't see it at all.
Every time I watched Michigan in 1999 I was much more impressed with Anthony Thomas and David Terrell than Tom Brady. That's not saying Renfree is going to be a good QB but his growth in his senior year was noticeable. The injury does pretty much screw him though since he won't get to do the combine or workout before the draft. I think he is a UDFA.
I agree. I haven't seen enough tape, but the tape I was watching, I was watching just him. Can you say that when you watched the game? Chances are you were watching the ball, as everyone does. You can find game highlights on youtube, and while I was watching, I noticed his ability to step up in the pocket, go through his progressions, and deliver a strike on almost every pass. The scouts for all teams will have more to work with, and if the game tapes are moderately as good as what I saw, he could move up the boards. However, he is projected to be undrafted.
Renfree is very unlikely to get drafted. He won't be able to work out in pads until June at the earliest. I'm guessing he will get snapped up as a UDFA right after the draft though. Somebody will take a chance on him hoping to get very lucky. QB is so valuable that it is worth looking at as many people as you can, even for just a cursory glance in the spring.
I can see that I guess. The big thing I see when I watch the tape on him is a guy who has trouble reading complex defenses. That's a big knock, but it seems like he has the perfect skillset for the current NFL QB.
I could not agree more. That is the reason I could see some team taking a flier in the draft. As a QB, the scouts can see what they are looking for from game tape. Throwing against air isn't going to change his value much. He can still go through interviews, and play recognition scenarios. I understand he will likely go undrafted, and don't want to under value the offseason process. I am just suggesting that a team that needs a QB may take the negotiation out of it, and just draft him late. If, when, he gets a chance to take mini camp reps, he will either be cut or kept. That happens with a majority of 5th,6th and 7th round picks anyway. ***I am not suggesting we should draft him in the 5th, 6th, or 7th round mind you, but I would not go nuts if we did ***
The MAjority of NCAA football I watch on TV, I tend to single out a player and focus on just him. I dont care who wins or loses the games adn dont have a team I cheer for, I just watching the kids play. I'll Watch one or two guys a quarter that way. As for Viewing of Tape online, I do a ton of it. Its easy to get a read on a guy when you can see 30 or so snaps in 5 to 8 mins of viewing. There is very little of such on Renfree though, jsut highlight videos which are basicly useless.
The growth was there, but it was bascily him going from a turn over machine to a decent ACC caliber QB. He is only a so-so athlete and threw a ton of picks in the NCAA. If he really goes through his reads, he is making the wrong decision often.
What do you guys think about EJ Manuel? Out of fsu. I really like what I am seeing from this guy, he's prettyg big, fast, has a strong arm but would need some development because he is very raw. We could probably pick him up in the 2nd or 3rd. I think that he has the skill set to become a very good QB in the nfl, if he can develop.
Check my posts on him in the other QB threads. He has the size, speed, arm strength and is deadly accurate. He isn't "raw". He started two full seasons and played in all four. His problem is that he has trouble reading defenses. I personally think he is worth a 3rd round pick and will probably shoot up into the 2nd round after the combine. He is my favorite QB prospect in this draft.
I wouldn't call him accurate relative to other NFL prospects. He had the benefit of one of the best wide receivers in college in Rashad Greene. Whenever I would watch Florida State I'd come away pretty unimpressed. He made way too many off target throws for me. He's got the reputation for being inconsistent and I think he's earned it.
He's not a starting NFL QB in my opinion. He reminds me of Tyrod Taylor, huge arm and tremendous athlete but lacks in too many other areas to start in the NFL. A mid to late round pick whose ceiling is likely a decent backup QB. This really is a terrible draft if you need a QB, especially compared to last year.
I liked Taylor more than I like Manuel. Taylor had the ability in college to lead his team to wins on his own. Manuel has great talent around him.
I agree with your suggestion that Manuel was inconsistent. It seems like college football analysts have been talking about this guy since 2008/09 and the guy just continually failed to live up to expectations and never really shined on the big stage. I liked Taylor more than Manuel as well. Manuel is an extremely impressive athlete with his huge arm, mobility, and size, but he doesn't have NFL caliber accuracy, field vision, decision making, etc. A lot of those things are hard-wired, you either have it or you don't and they can't really be taught.
I don't understand why Landry Jones is not a sure 1st round pick guy. He plays for a big school, and his numbers look great. I don't follow college much, so someone fill me in please?
Wait a minute I agree we shouldn't reach for a QB at #9. But that doesn't mean we can't take a flyer on OBs in the later rounds We can't act like there's never been a decent QB taken in the second round
