since when was there one way to build a winner, we have the opportunity to get 2 OLB in the draft in 2013 and 2014. Revis and Cromartie impact the game in all facets as well, allowing us to put 8 in the box helps the run, their cover skills help us rush the pass since our pass rushers have more time to get to the QB and if we had more speed at LB then we'd get more sacks and of course they cover like no other

how hard is it for you guys to understand that

no lets trade Revis for a 2nd Round pick, the Chargers traded Cro for a 2nd rounder and drafted Jonas Mouton..............yeah lets do what they did

Name a championship team that was built this way? We had Revis and Cro in their primes the last two years. How did that fare?

Stop being juvenile and putting dumbass comments in my mouth. No one on this board would ever say trade Revis for a 2nd round pick. Even you know that, so why say it? His value is much higher than that. I honestly think we can get a 1st and a 2nd or 3rd or a 2nd and 4th this year and a 1st next year or something along those lines. No one is saying trade Revis for a bag of chips just to trade him, I think you are missing that part. Its not like I dont love Revis as a player or think he's one of the best players to put on a Jets uniform, because I do.

You plan on drafting 2 OLB's high in the next two drafts... Hmm. This team isnt going anywhere unless you can put points on the board. Havent you seen anything of the NFL within the last decade or so? Elite defenses dont win you championships. Elite QBs do. Its just the way the NFL is now, sadly. And if you have an elite defense, you still better be ready to put up 24+ points on the board.

If you have two elite CBs taking up 20% of you cap room, the opposing offense is going to go 4 WR wide and you are going to have a tough time covering the other two players because so much of your resources are put into the two CBs. Didnt you watch this team get torched by TE's, slot receivers and RB's out of the backfield last year? Its not impossible to beat a defense with Revis and Cro.

Oh, and if you pay Revis the money he wants, you have no shot at signing Alex Smith because you wont be able to afford him.

Ill go back to the competing in by 2015 thing again... You think Revis and Cro are going to be the same players they are? Not losing a step? I doubt it. And saying we are legit SB contenders in 2015 is being EXTREMELY generous considering the state of this team.

Also, if you dont trade Revis, you either risk lose him to FA where you get an amazing 3rd round pick or you give out the biggest contract to a defensive player. Ever. No single player, aside from an elite QB or Passrusher should even be talked about in that discussion of money.

    You've given insufficient evidence... Sorry.

    1. I've seen many guys say trade Revis for a 2nd or 2 2nd's and its absurd to even think about let along do
    2. Again we cant under value his presence and then say we want picks in return, the most we'll get is a 3rd and that is a compensatory pick since he has to agree to an extension with the team we trade him too since he cant be tagged
    3. Rex has proven our 2 elite CB's can get us very close to a title, get some speed at LB and we take that next step, fill the holes on the offense, scheme a little better and we're back in the playoffs
    4. We worry about Revis' deal in 2014 when Sanchez and Holmes' contracts come off the books or did you not think that was plausible
    5. Corners age well, Charles Woodson won DPOY at 33 years old, Champ Bailey is still a great corner, Pass Rushers dont age well at all
    6. Trading him doesn't solve any problem you propose it only creates another problem. You want extra picks this draft trade back for once instead of trading up, you want better cap management give out contracts to those who deserve big money instead of those who dont
    7. Revis and Cromartie will shut down the opponent 2 top receivers, Kyle will handle the slot, our safeties(hopefully Landry and a rookie) will lay wood and cover deep. Harris and Davis will take care of the run along with Wilkerson-Pouha/Ellis-Coples on the line. We can draft a rookie OLB and sign a vet stop gap and have an elite defense. Patch up the offense as we gradually build it up and this team is back in the playoff hunt

we have the GOAT Cornerback, the GOAT, you dont trade the GOAT, period.

but why am I arguing with you Woody and Rex will not let him go

I have no Revis conflict. There's no way he's playing for this team in 2014. He will have to test the open market no matter what we offer him just to see what is out there. Even if the Jets blew him away with one of the richest contract offers of all time he'd want to go look and see. It's just his nature. There's money to be had and Darrelle Revis has been as good at getting money as anybody possibly could have been in his situation.

Anybody who thinks Revis will sign with the Jets before he sees what is over the horizon is dreaming. Anybody who thinks the Jets could live with the contract it would take to make the sentence above invalid is a fool.

Next time don't sugarcoat it, just say what you mean--are we or are we not in cap hell? LOL. Seriously, I appreciate your opinion. My opinion is that we need to stockpile picks and Revis situation is one way of doing that--we'll see what they do.

I understand you wanting to stockpile picks but again Revis isn't the way to do that

    1. he's coming off of ACL surgery
    2. he cant be tagged

teams are going to want to see how he looks coming back and he should be fine, along with him agreeing to an extension before they give 1 pick let along multiple picks

trading Cromartie is more plausible because he's locked into a contract, is a great corner as well and wouldn't come with the uncertainty Revis would bring to a team hoping he'd re-sign in the off-season

Tanny made a huge error & if he taken my advice & traded him before last season began because I had said we were going 6-10 in 2012 so he would no value to us anyway

Problem is Rex loves Revis even more than his girl Sanchez. He won't trade him even if it is the best option. We need a strong GM who can see the big picture. Woody needs to hire a strong GM and let him run the team, to include firing Rex if he wants.

This is so outer space, I honestly don't know how to respond.

If you were to build up the LB corp, you don't need a talent like Revis. (Who again is the best in the league.)

Let's put this in a different context. Say we were to trade Revis, and with the money we save for trading him, we could pick up Cliff Avril and Connor Barwin. Don't like those 2 players add who you want.

The point is, even with the great talent of Revis, he can only account for 1 aspect or player of the game. In the above scenario, we could pick up 2 players that could improve glaring holes, and still have draft picks. Look at the whole picture, and not just draft picture.

How am I under valuing Revis? I have stated he is the best in the game.

You can't put emotion into a business decision. Trading Revis can help this team more than keeping him. If we could get a 50% home discount and trade Cro, then done deal.

Im beginning to get sick of your posts. You plan on giving Revis 15 mil a year or having him play this year instead of trading him just to se him walk in FA. You plan on also resigning Landry who is going to want at least 7 mil a year and then you plan on drafting an OLB very high this year and next year. Id say thats brilliant. You must be Rex Ryan? You know, ignoring the offense completely and putting all of the resources into the defense. Id argue that your plan is even more extreme than Rex.

You are so subjective, its pretty funny. You just think "oh Revis is the greatest of all time!!!! You dont trade that!!!" I would like to see what these GM's who say we have cap trouble (may not be in cap hell, but we sure as hell have major problems) when you add a contract that Revis wants to it. Im sure they cringe at the sight.

You do realize that our defense was the #2 pass defense IN THE LEAGUE. Without your precious greatest of all time. So we should pay another 15 million to a 3rd CB in order to increase that? You are so set on having this defense all world, yet you ignore every other facet of the game. Also, thinkin back to when we played the Bills in 2011, I remember when Stevie Johnson had a pretty good game against him. Revis of course had very good coverage, but Fitzpatrick made some great throws that Johnson was able to catch. Its not impossible to beat Revis. I am glad you do not have a say in all this because our offense might even be LESS talented, which I didnt think was possible. Your plan is simply patch work. That will only prolong this mess.

It is not the ONLY way to succeed in the league - that I can admit. But, if you read my other postings (first one was the salary cap posting - the next one was the team set-up) then it won't be too hard to understand why 'that' way is [easier] than 'your' way. (Yeah. That is the deal. It is EASIER to build, and sustain success that way. Not because it is the RIGHT way. The two do not have to be same.)

In the end, it's all about how you manage the resource. If you concentrate the wealth of your team at the top of the roster, you are seriously begging for a failure. (If the past few years haven't taught you that, then I have to conclude you just do not have the ability to learn from the history. How effective was Revis last year on his hospital bed? He sure shut down his bed sheet all right.)

P.S. If you read my postings correctly, you'd easily see that I wasn't just suggesting Jets trade Revis. If Revis signs contract that gives him some 9-10M/yr, while #2 CB (whoever that is) takes 4-5M/yr, then that CAN happen. At current status, Revis is picking up 10, Cro picks up 11, and Wilson picks up 3+. That won't fly in today's NFL. Ok? (Read the posting and think a little bit.)

One other thing on Revis: just imagine paying him like the CB that he has been under Rex Ryan only having another head coach here and the Rex defense gone. The Revis who played for the Jets when Eric Mangini was coaching was good but nobody in their right mind would have thought him a double-digits on the cap CB.

This I do not approve. You're wrong on that account, Br4d.

You will encounter with a team with elite WRs down the road, and you will need one of these shutdown CBs. The catch is, you need only one at most.

If you check the salary breakdown of winning teams, you'd find that more than half the teams feature one CB with a salary figure near 10M. (Some over that, some slightly less, like 9 or 9.5.)

So, if Revis comes at that tag (at 9 - 10 range) then you know he is not being that outrageous. Now, the problem is, Jets are spending another 10M on #2 CB (this is overspending) and then another 3M on #3 CB. The two contracts are what's making no sense at all. Not the #1 contract (under 10M, I might add.)

How did having the No. 1 d in the league really work out? We are in cap hell with an outright crappy O in large part because we have one of the most expensive defenses in the league. Do we really need a defensive genius as HC to have a really good D when we have one of the highest priced defenses in the league?

Denver lost because they were dumb enough to think they could put a corner on an Island against a big fast WR without safety help. When they finally rotated a safety over to help he made an incredibly bad play on the ball.

You need a balanced team to win in this league.

Tone, Ferguson and Mangold say hi.

Yep. That's 30M right off. (If you add Jason Smith, that's 40M. If you add Nacho? That's half the cap at 50M. The point is, Jets D is not THE most expensive defense in the league.)

Jets are a well-balanced team in that regard - at least in terms of salary cap breakdown. Coaching staff qualification is a slightly different problem.

And, these bloated contracts are the product of - gasp - Tannenbaum, the whizkid, boy-wonder GM you guys all hailed as THE genius for some time.

Harris, Scott, Tone and Sanchez are grossly over paid. All players that Rex had to have. Hell Scott got 11.5 million to come here. Rex practically blew Tone in the parking lot and was acting as Revis's in house public relations manager. Not to mention his great workout with Sanchez where he said he wanted him to lead his team.

Tanny is not a great football guy but he did manage to give Rex the highest priced team, the one he wanted on the field, 4 consecutive years.

Mangold and Ferguson are not overpaid by NFL standards. The overpaid guys are all guys Rex has tated on his ass.

Im assuming that you think that 9-10 million figure is what Revis should be getting paid and know that he is going to want more than that? Because I expect him to want around 14-16 million a year. I just dont see why he would want less. Mario Williams got a 6 year 100 million dollar deal. Im sure when Revis saw that his eyes lit up. He thinks he's the best defensive player in the league (which is true) and he'll want to be paid like that.

Here's the problem, on Revis's current contract he was paid 42 million over 4 years, the last year of which is 2013 and there were additional years if Revis chose not to opt out after 2013. In the first two years of the deal he was paid 16 million essentially per year ending in 2012 with a lower salary in 2013 and 2014. The Jets paid the large balance of the salary the first two seasons, and Revis was talking about holding out prior to this season, but if he had actually held out 2014 and beyond would have become vested and he would have lost his opt out after 2013. the 4 year deal was a very fair deal for both the player and the team. It made Revis the highest paid CB over that 4 year span and paid 32 of the 42 million up front in the first two years. But as soon as the 16 per was gone Revis was talking hold out.

Now with the injury Revis is basically saying no to any contract offers, in his words "he's not even thinking about it". Do you really think he's going to "settle" for less than a 12-15 million per year deal when just over 10 million per year average didn't suit him once the 32 million up front money had been paid?

Revis is without a doubt the best CB in the league, But as bad as this team is they can't afford to pay him what he wants and field a good team. At least in my opinion. If he'll sign for 10 per, give or take, sure. But he won't, he wasn't/isn't happy on his current deal making 10.25 in salary over 4 years average why would he be happy with 10.25 or even more on this team?

That said you don't trade him for nothing. If you don't get the right price you play it out. But if you do get the right price. pull the trigger.
