Today's game taught us nothing about Revis' value...we already knew that. He's the best player on the Jets and one of the best players in the entire NFL at whatever position.

...the only way you even consider trading him is if you concede going into full-blown rebuilding mode, which is something the Jets are not ready to do yet, or so it seems.

Its not like Rex can help a player judge a ball. Do you think Rex would allow the 49ers to absolutely reck us? Or the Pats throw all over us? Or Chris Johnson to break a 90 yard run? Or Marshawn run all over us?... Oh wait.

I fully understand that Revis is going to want to get paid the biggest defensive contract ever. Im not sure you do.

If you think this offense is going to be okay especially considering you want us to spend high picks on the defense, you are sadly mistaken. This offense isnt an easy fix. It is one of the most talented groups in the NFL. Outside of Brick and Mangold, none of them really deserve a starting job. If you think Alex Smith is coming here while giving Revis 15 mil a year, you are sadly mistaken.

We need a RB, #1 WR, TE, RG and a QB at minimum. Being a Jets fan, Im sure you can see that filling that QB position is easier said than done. If you expect a young QB to come in here and succeed with a similar offense in terms of talent because many of your resources have once again been put towards the defense, you are (again) sadly mistaken.

Some of the better defenses in the NFL are currently in the playoffs... 49ers, Seattle, Denver and the Ravens when healthy. So far 3 out of the 4 have let up over 21 points, meaning that the offenses had to put up about 24 just to win. That would mean that you would need about a top 10 scoring offense to win [on average]. Theres no getting around it. This is an offensive driven league. Despite how good your defense may be, your still going to need a franchise QB and a good offense. Good luck fielding a good offense with 20% of the cap spent on two CBs.

The problem is that Revis will NOT sign a reasonable contract and the idea that you could entice him with any kind of "future considerations" is simply childish and ridiculous. Revis will ask to be paid more than any other CB in the league and WILL hold out.

Revis MUST be on the trading block and considering his past contract history, he must be on the TOP of the list. Jets can either trade him this offseason to the highest bettor, or loose him next year to FA for nothing.

scheme is big thing and offensive players are easier to find than defensive players

O-Line- we need 2 guards maybe 1 if we bring back Moore/Slauson or none if Ducasse steps up.

WR/TE- Holmes/Edwards/Kerley/Hill should be a nice group, at TE Keller is likely gone so we may add one via draft or FA, if Keller comes back we can still add another and go from there

RB- Powell is set a 3rd Down Back, we can draft a RB(Eddie Lacy) and go from there with Lacy/Powell/McKnight. Draft a FB late

QB- I still have faith in Sanchez as long as we get a good QB coach and OC, play calling is an issue and has been, we need to play to Mark's strengths and let him make plays. Alex Smith is a better option if he comes available the only other team I can see him going to is Arizona, Jacksonville or Cleveland. If we give him the starting job however we're the best fit

Our offense isn't far off from good enough and trading Revis doesn't help the offense at all

I used to think and hope the same thing re Sanchez. Problem is that he still stares down the receivers, still takes sacks when can throw the ball away, still tries to force ball into triple coverage, still can't read defences etc.. These are rookie mistakes that are unacceptable for a 4th yr QB to make. If he didn't learn in 4 years, he never will.

As to "not far off"... You are dilusional. Even if somehow you strike gold and every single player you draft will prove to be a keeper, they still need to learn the system, and that's at least a year.

What I saw today was Champ Bailey and Charles Woodson's teams both get gashed on defense and lose.

    What did you see again?

Yes, I know the team did go to AFC finals with Sanchez before but it is very very difficult to imagine him as a QB in a playoff pressure cooker atmosphere with the confidence, swagger and pin point accuracy that defines your typical playoff QB today. It is just very difficult to see him as becoming that sort of QB again, regardless of the QB coach. I just don't see it happening. And in these playoffs, it is not like the receivers are getting separation from defenders (which has been a convenient excuse for Sanchez), it is the pinpoint accuracy threading the needle type of throws that QB makes that move the sticks. Sanchez hasn't shown he can do that with any consistency at all. Don't know what is realistic alternative to him given cap situation, but he sure isn't the answer and Jets better move away from him ASAP.

I understand the reservations about Sanchez but again does trading Revis help him no, not at all

We're likely stuck with him at QB unless Geno falls to 9 or the new GM and Rex fall in love with a young QB or Alex Smith, Philip Rivers or someone good enough comes available

I love Revis, don't get me wrong but if there was ever a time to trade him it is this offseason. We were ranked 2nd in pass defense despite not having Revis all year minus two.

I think that was one of the few positives to come out of the season, we now know that Cro and Wilson are capable of taking over that gig. I think getting maximum value and cutting ties now is the smart approach.

we didn't play any aggressive passing teams, our run defense was shot this year so teams ran the ball more, dont look at that ranking and think we're better off without him

    Great point by the OP

Anybody watching the Broncos piss away their season because of hideously inept defensive back play and still thinks that the Jets should trade the best defensive back in the NFL now and maybe ever for draft pick crap shoot dice throws is just clueless about football

I really dont understand guys saying we're fine without Revis, pretty much undervaluing him yet asking for multiple picks in return

What if revis isn't 75% of his old self from now on? He may never be the same. Guarantee he isn't what he was before in one way or another. He is gonna want money that we can't give him until Nacho is off the books. I would trade him if the price is right. Revis proved he isn't a team player when he held out the first time!

So basically the theme of this thread is do the same thing we've done the past few years and hope we're just barely good enough to slip in to the wildcard?

Is this really the expectation level the fans have adopted?

Bringing back last years O-Line is an option? Pinning hopes to a Qb who even at his best wasn't even average?

I can tell you what all the teams that won today, and the teams that will win tomorrow, have in common. None have elite CB's, all have far above average offensive lines, all have Plus QB's, yes even the Ravens.

What you saw in Denver was Revis in a couple more years, on the wrong side of 30 and beginning to lose a step to the younger receivers, Revis will be 28 next season. 29 in 2014.

I understand the emotional investment in a player, I've been emotionally invested in many players over the years. but they all pass by, they all age, and time and injury catches up with all of them.

Why do teams like the Patriots and Packers excel so much over the years? They know when to let go of players, even though they still have value at the time. They're always looking not just at this year, but 2-3 years down the road so that they're never win now and they're always the best they can be.

The Jets are not a good team this year, they weren't a good team last year, they played better than they were in 2010 and eaked by in 2009.

In the last 5 seasons the Jets have been better than basically a .500 (+/-) 1 year out of the 5, the year they basically played better than their talent. The team as a whole is older and slower, the offensive line has gone from plus to a minus....
The QB has never developed, and going on QB history it's unlikely at this point he will, it's now roughly the equivalant of betting the house on 00 on the roulette wheel, yeah the ball could settle there, but the odds are greatly against it.

In sports sentimentality with players usually has bad results.

Your whole point frankly is your hatred for his holdout. For that act you would trade Babe Ruth to the Yankees for cash to finance No No Nanette...

Thank goodness you aren't being interviewed by Jed Hughes

Because there are teams out there who just have one or two holes and REvis does actually make the team a whole lot more difficult to beat, while he's still in his prime. By the time the Jets can turn this team around, in 2-3 years, Revis will be leaving his prime and beginning to lose a step or two.

I want a team that's aiming not at just trying to slip in through the backdoor in to the playoffs, I want a team that's breaking down the door to win the division. The means rebuilding from the ground up based on what we have.

It means cutting ties with a number of players Harris, Revis, Holmes, Sanchez, Probably Keller, in fact over the next 2 to 3 years most of the starters aged over 25 currently, with the exceptions of Brick and Mangold, who should anchor our O-line for another 4-5 seasons, although by the end of that run Brick will probably shift to right tackle, O-linemen assuming they stay relatively healthy, hold their value pretty well in to their mid 30's. By that time there hopefully will be younger players in the pipeline.

I've seen, over the years, something I call the football equivilant to stockholm syndrome. It's where the fans of a traditionally hapless organization have a star player and fans get so emotionally attached to that "ray of hope" that they become blinded to everything else and incapable of looking at a situation rationally.

I'm pretty sure that's Junc's problem with Sanchez, he so emotionally oversold himself on Sanchez that he can't remove the blinders and give up that "ray of hope".

But as long as that's the mentality of this team the best it will ever be is a wild card maybe. The Jets are no longer even the #2 team behind the Patriots, the Bills and the Dolphins are assuming that role.

no no no no, this is all just nonsense

you dont trade Elite players, Revis will not be traded, if he walks he walks but he will not be traded unless we're out of playoff contention by the trade deadline

So Revis is past his prime at 28 but Tom Brady is a spring chicken at 37 who will keep the Pats afloat forever?

That's the line of thinking of an also ran. But if your fine with a 3rd round comp pick and a 9m cap hit in 2014 when he walks, fine. But it's that line of thinking that has sunk this organization over the years. Hold on to the star while filling the rest of the holes with chewing gum.

And if trying to trade Revis mid season before the trade deadline is the ultimate in selling low. I'll bet a years worth of not positing on this board that the Jets are no better than 8-8 next year, and probably around 4-5 wins next year.
