Totally agree. As Mike Westhoff sounded off "the jets have way too much money tied up in way too few players." This is the NFL not the NBA--The Thunder can pay a fortune to Durant and Westbrook and get by. The jets need to move Revis and his huge contract/ potential new contract and get some picks. The jets depth is so weak that they need to hit a home run in the draft for the next three years. Now that we don't have Tanny foolishly trading all our picks to move up, it is time to REBUILD thru the draft and that starts with getting some picks by moving Revis.
BB would sign Revis in a heartbeat. That would suck because I would have to put a bullet in my head. SO for my sake please sign or trade him.
I don't disagree with this, but the value for Cro is much less than that of a healthy/even unknown health Revis for the same reasons mentioned above.
Not a chance. Bill Belichik has stiff-armed high-priced CB's repeatedly in his tenure as Patriot's head coach. The last one that he signed to a big contract was Ty Law and he got rid of that contract as soon as the cap would allow. The Steelers aren't going to go for Revis either. Not unless he takes a 50% hometown discount.
you guys just wanna gut this team of all our talent hey lets trade Revis for picks, no thats just stupid as hell, stop worrying about the cap, stop listening to the media and stop thinking there's always a quick fix. If anything that opens up a new hole that NO ONE can fill. Cro was good this year but he was no Revis Revis' cap hit will be minimal in 2014 if he signs an extension, Holmes and Sanchez come off the books. Revis' cap hit increases in 2015 when David Harris' huge contract will be off the books and if we take care of business in the draft and add as much youth as we can and continue to develop guys our only big contracts will be Ferguson, Mangold, Cromartie and Revis in 2015 with a ton of guys still on the rookie deals and few role players through free agency
You don't trade Revis. You trade Cromartie. The guy just had one of his best seasons and now is the time to sell HIGH on him. Make value off of the 2nd round pick we dished for him.
Simply, why is that stupid? LOL, what do you think is minimal? $8 Million, $10 Million? You yourself said a $100 Million dollar contract, right?
the 1st year of big contracts tend have smaller cap hits, due to the guaranteed money and bonuses its stupid because we have an elite player and want to deal him for "picks" you know guys who may not turn out to be any good. Keep Revis, let the unnecessary contracts end and continue to build start the draft and add role players on the cheap via free agency guys are looking for a quick fix, they just want picks to have picks trade back and get some additional picks, scout as much as you can draft well, keep your players, leave no stone unturned but dont trade your best player
So your solution is to build around a corner? You are suggesting to extend Revis long term, and letting the other contract run their course. In other words, building around a corner. Is there any precedent, where a team has built around a corner? In general, you need your corners to cover for 3-4 seconds. A good pass rush will make any cornerback look like Revis. Your suggestions are to sign Revis to an 8yr 100 Million dollar contract. If the contract is front loaded, which is almost a certainty you would need to distribute the $45 Million dollar guarantee over the first few years. In addition, you are suggesting an extension, which means he would play out his current contract, and the new contract would start in 2014. If we spread the guarantee over a ridiculously long 5 years, it is a minimum of $9 Million per year. A more realistic guaranteed term would be 3 Years and $15 Million per year. (Using your contract offer) This does not even take into consideration the absurdly low $5 Million dollar signing bonus. If you backload the contract, well, that is borderline insanity for a third contract.
I haven't seen a single valid reason for keeping Revis. Only reason we should even consider keeping him is if we get nothing but lowball offers for Revis. If we can get a 1st, I think you take it. He gets paid what he's "worth", and he's just not worth that on a team of misfits and poor talent. We need to upgrade the talent elsewhere, and what better way than getting rid of extremely high priced players. I don't care how good a CB is, he's still just a CB.
no build around our 2 shutdown corners, stick Kyle back in the slot, add a cover safety, draft 2 pass rushers in the next 2 years, develop our D-Line, develop Demario Davis, replace Harris in 2015 and have an elite defense. find a QB via the draft when the time comes and add talent through the draft, dont sign any expensive free agents to huge contracts and invest in the O-line. and do it all via the draft As far as Revis' contract goes, I'm not sure how his agent wants it structued but again I blame Tanny Harris Cromartie Holmes Sanchez Pace Scott all got paid ridiculous money, are we suppose to low ball Revis because Tanny didn't manage the cap properly Again you give no valid reason as to why we should trade him and cap relief isn't a reason because only players who aren't worth top dollar hurt the cap Revis is worth every dime
Also how the hell can you under value a player like Revis yet expect to get value in return for trading him, it doesn't work that way some of you just want to trade him for no reason
Jeti The jets are in cap hell, we have no depth, and we can't afford Revis. This team needs to rebuild big time, ESPECIALLY ON OFFENSE. Move Revis for a series of picks, even if you have to make some of them conditional on him resigning with the team that trades with the jets.
1. we're not in cap hell 2. we cant move him for picks unless he agrees to a contract extension, even then the other team cant just wait until the off-season and not give up any picks 3. 2014 we have 2 huge contracts off the books, 2015 we have another one 4. we're not in cap hell 5. we dont need to rebuild 6. we're not in cap hell 7. we can afford Revis 8. because we're not in cap hell 9. we have holes that can be field via draft then next 2 years and stop gaps in the mean time 10. we're not in cap hell
I really like how you say someone else's posts are horrible yet never support your claims. Thats a great way going about things...
You obviously ignored my post. Go read that first, then come back. Revis is not worth the money - not at 9M, and definitely not at 14-15M.
How long do you think it will take us to compete for a SB title from now? 1 year? 2 years? 3 years? Longer? I dont see how we compete for a SB title at least until 2015 baring an absolute miracle. By 2015, the "core of our team"- Revis, Cromartie, Mangold, Brick and Harris, will all be 30 give or take a year. These players are in their primes now. Why should we be paying Revis 15 million a year if we are not realistically going to compete for at least a couple of years? This core had their shot at a SB in 2010. They failed... An NFL team just does not invest 25+ million in 2 CB positions. Its just not wise. That is 20% of your cap right there. If you account for 29 non starters and the punter and kicker (who are all receiving minimum), you are left with the other 20 starting positions averaging about a little over 4 million per player. Now thats straps you with the cap for the other starters (and obviously if a starter has more than that 4 million, another starter is going to have to have equally less). It also causes your depth to be either rookies or very poor players receiving minimum. That causes your ST's to be very bad and if injuries occur, you are basically fucked. You can not build a team around 2 corner backs. You can build around LB's (for instance Patrick Willis and Aldon Smith or Ray Lewis and Suggs) because they can impact a play in all phases- defend the run, pass rush, or in coverage. A CB can basically only do one thing- cover a receiver. And when half the time that CB thats getting paid 14 million is covering the likes of Brian Hartline, Brandon Lloyd, Denarious Moore, Josh Gordon, Anquan Boldin and even Stevie Johnson, its just not worth it.
