Damn....damn....damn....damn....there really is no one else out there I like. Period. I swear to Christ that if they put some multi-retread that was previously in the NY Jets organization in there I'll pull my face off.
I don't know how anyone can reasonably expect that we will be competitive next year. We have a terrible offense with terrible offensive talent. We were ranked 30th out of 32 teams. We scored more than 20 only 5 times and 10 or less 7 times. Regardless of how good the defense, you have to account for some defensive and ST scores allowed and our offensive production just cannot account for 2 many wins. We have one player (Mangold) who would be a starter on more than half of the other teams in the NFL. Realistically it will take 2 or 3 years to upgrade the offensive enough to be competitive. Could we make the playoffs? Maybe but I would say it is a real long shot.
Nice post Make sure you carry your umbrella with you at all times. A hurricane/tornado/blizzard/tsunami/sandstorm/mudslide/meteor crash could occur at any moment
Problem is the Jets aren't, and haven't been, among the best team. The best they've been is a wild card team, and one of those two seasons was just over .500 (in fact the same record they had the year before but missed the playoffs). The Jets had an elite defense, the problem is an elite defense is difficult to maintain long term because it depends on so many players. Most of the best teams that rebuild and contend year after year have two things, a good O-line and a top notch QB who can carry a team. The Jets have neither of those. Unless the Jets get REALLY lucky in the draft and pick up 4-5 above average starters for their position in the draft, the jets are going nowhere next season.
They went 6-10 with probably a bottom a 5 QB in the league. I think the OL can be shored up in this draft, and we can scratch to a WC team if we abstain from injuries. It's not likely, but we made the playoffs with a QB throwing 12 TDs and 20 INTS in his first year , so if we get a veteran QB who can throw for 10 and 10 or 15-12 or something like that, we have a shot. Not a good one for the playoffs though.
Decent coaching is relatively useless unless you have the talent to make it effective coaching. Very few coaches can find success with a shitty roster.
I would include Ferguson as a tackle who would start for just about any other team, and frankly Holmes would be a starter for most, but not all, teams.
Thing is the team was a lucky 6-10 this year, there were two games the Jets really should have lost and probably a third that I'm not thinking of off hand. The first Dolphins game really should have been won by the Dolphins several times and the Cardinals game if they'd had ANYONE at QB would have won that game. It's also worth noting that the 2009 team made the playoffs with the exact same record they had the year before but didn't make the playoffs. In fact that same 9-7 record definitely would not have made the playoffs in 2010 or 2012, and only one 9-7 team made the playoffs in 2011. 2009 was a dismal year for the AFC with two 9-7 teams making the playoffs and that was a 4 way tie in the standings. It's also worth noting that the team was only 9-7 because the Colts sat their regulars for most of the game.
There is no such thing is a full rebuild mode anymore. Look at the teams who picked high in the draft last year and how many more wins they got this year. This team won 6 games with the worst QB in the NFL. Replace him with an average QB, get Holmes and Revis back healthy, and there is no reason for this team not to compete next year (not saying they will be a playoff team, but I find it hard to believe they'll be worse than 8 wins).
I said whould not start on more than half of the teams Without going over team by team I would estimate Brick as a starting LT on between 10 -15. For Holmes using the term "starter" assuming a traditional pro set that has 2 WR's the number would definitely be less than 10 in my opinion.
Ha. I really like you as a new poster  your posts are kind of funny because they have absolutely no support to them. Oh wait.. them having no support to them would mean that they actually suck. Next time before you call out someone and claim that all of his statements are false, make sure you give reasoning. Otherwise its just a baseless, subjective claim.
This is really important to understand. Trying to win with a great defense requires more injury luck than most strategies because there are so many keys that can fall out and cause the defense to decline. The Jets go to the Super Bowl in 2009 or 2010 if Kris Jenkins doesn't drop out as an example. They maybe go in 2009 if Donald Strickland is not hurt in the first half against Indy.
Here is a big question .... What will it take for us to be a 10+ game winning team for a decade or more? The Pats have done it and honestly its quite impressive. I saw someone post that in the 80's the Dolphins ruled , in the 90's the Bills ruled in the 2000's the Pats ruled. Mean while we have been 2nd at best to near the bottom of the barrel. I think if we are going to rebuild let's go ahead and suck for 1-2 years and get rid of wasted contracts and dump players that we don't want or need. Weve always had a tendency to get rid of better players and bring in washed up over paid replacements in search of resurrecting their careers. I mean literally we had 4 1st round picks in the 2000 draft and we didn't become a dynasty is just mind boggling. If 2000 was a bad year for the first round picks have a Gm competent enough to trade out of the first with all those picks and move down and the better choice into the 1st round of next year. If a Franchise QB is what we need to reface the organization then let's wait till we have the right can't miss choice come along and we have a stock pile of picks to move up and get the player we want. Andrew Luck single Handedly turned the Colts around , I would of thought they would of had a 4-6 game wins but they made it to the playoffs. Last but not least we need to build team ethic, we need players and coaches who can keep their mouthes shut and do their job. Hopefully this process will land us some good stand up guys. We need the mentality of selecting players and personnel by saying is this person a New York Jet Type of guy. If they aren't then we say no thanks and don't settle for less.
80's Marino, 90's Kelly (big assist from Bruce Smith), 00's Brady. That's it right there if you want to be a team that wins 10+ games a year every year.
Brick is generally rated as one of the best LT's in football. There is little doubt in my mind that he'd be a starter at one of the tackle positions, most likely left, on 28 of the 32 teams. don't undersell Holmes, he's not a #1 receiver but remember who he's had throwing to him these past few seasons. Holmes is a WR who is at his best if you can hit him in stride and give him a chance to make a play after the catch, which is something Sanchez does very poorly. In any offense where he's not the #1 receiver and with a competent QB he'd be a dangerous weapon. Again, I'd bet 26 of the 32 teams would line him up as the #2 or slot receiver.
In the AFC east it's all about the QB. As a previous poster mentioned, in the 80's it was Marino and the Dolphins, in the 90's Kelly and the Bills, and this past decade it was Brady and the Pats. Look in every division that's been dominated by a single team for around a decade and you'll always find an elite QB at the top of that. Yes lesser QB's may win an occasional season here and there aided by a great defense, but year in and year out since they opened up the passing game through rule changes it's become a QB driven league. If you want to have a 8-10 year run you HAVE to have an elite QB, or at least the best QB in your division.
Fins - modified run and shoot. Bills - trips FTW. Pats - spread. Systems are important but the reason three different teams dominated two different eras in the AFC East is that they had great QB's. You could have the world's greatest system and if the guy you had running it was not great you'd only get a few years out of it and probably not top years at that.
