A chance to become a gm of a pro football team is something very rare. No one is turning down a shot at becoming a gm because of the cap situation. My guess is that Woody simply hasn't liked any of the candidates because they are telling him that Sanchez and Rex have to go.
Not necessarily. Even with the players we have to dump the defense should be good enough to keep the Jets in every game. Now will the offense look like anything other than a high school JV unit led by a pimple nosed dork who spends more time playing World of Warcraft then preparing for football games and getting good grades? I'm not holding my breath.
Have you not been paying attention to the NFL over the last however many years. Teams can and do turn it around in one offseason all the time now. Not saying Jets will but to say the Jets are doomed for the next 5 years is as stupid as those saying the Jets will win the SB next year.
5 years is a lifetime in the NFL. We've seen worse situations turned around in 1 season. A good QB and a couple of offensive play makers can make a world of difference, especially when you have a defensive guru like Rex.
sure there will, the question is will it be the best guy? and will it be the guy who will lead us to a consistent winner.
I am SO TIRED of hearing about the Jets' salary cap hell problems. I've been hearing the same thing from guys like John Clayton and Mike Lombardi since 2009. Yet somehow the Jets are always under the cap and have enough room. As stated by others, the Jets can clear an enormous amount of space by cutting dead weight like Pace, Scott, the two Smith's, etc with minimal dead money hits, leaving the team with more than enough cap space. And for those saying "well then you have to replace those players," how hard is it to replace a LB that has zero speed and cannot cover anyone (Bart Scott), a OLB who cannot rush the passer anymore and can't cover a TE (Pace), a safety/LB hybrid who is too small to play the run consistently and too damn slow to cover anything with an ounce of speed (Eric Smith) and a backup tackle picking pine out of his ass from riding the bench (Jason Smith)? I'm pretty sure you can find replacements for all of those bums in the mid to late rounds of the draft, or an undrafted free agent, or a guy that signs for the vet minimum. The real issues are finding a way to keep Landry, getting a good QB, and finding a way to get Mark Sanchez the hell out of here without having to take a 17 million dead money hit.
I'm curious if you have any idea about how many 4th round and later picks become NFL starters. I think replacing 'all of those guys with mid to late rounds' in a single year is a bit...optomistic
What the hell do you think people are talking about when they say "cap hell"? All of those [bolded] things are what people are talking about? Everyone knows that they are going to cut Smith, Pace, Scott and Smith, but what about Harris' contract? Sanchez's contract? Holmes' contract? Those sure as hell account for the salary cap hell. When you pay a backup QB over 8 million, an average MLB money Patrick Willis should be making and a #2 receiver the most guaranteed money for the position at the time, theres definitely some problems. What do you think got Tannenbaum fired? Those ridiculous contracts that equate to "cap hell". Also the inability to address the depth of this team because we are always tied up against the cap. God, Im sick of people having this misconception that everything is going to be fine because we have just "gotten by" [with a deteriorating roster] over the past 3-4 years. You dont think these GM candidates dont realize that if you cut the big 4 players you save X amount of cap room? Of course they realize this, otherwise they wouldnt be in position to interview for the job. There's a lot of other restrictions that equate to cap hell- horrible contracts, Revis, lack of talent already on the roster, free agents...
Ask Green Bay how they do it, Pittsburgh as well You draft players and mold them into what they need to become to fit what you do as a team Part of that comes with not giving out big contracts in free agency and trading your picks. In hindsight all the trade ups hurt us
Anyone who thinks they still have a shot at GM somewhere else is. Jets are just waiting for the musical chairs to stop.
Sadly, we can do most of that, but I think Sanchez gets one more year in green and white, possibly as a backup, but its going to be too big a hit to swallow this year.
The point is that guys like Scott, Pace, Eric Smith, Jason Smith were no better than 4th or 5th round fliers this year. How much better was Eric Smith than Antonio Allen, a 7th round pick of the Jets? Not much. And at least with a young guy like Antonio Allen there is room for improvement and growth. Like when Seattle took a 5th round flier on Kam Chancellor and has groomed him into an outstanding SS that can lay wood and cover TE's. How much difference is there between Greg Hardy a 6th round DE and Calvin Pace? Greg Hardy had 3 and 4 sack season in 2010 and 2011, just like Calvin Pace. And then in 2012 Hardy had a breakout season with 11 sacks. You know what you have with guys like Scott, Smith, Pace. Old, slow, limited players who will only get worse. Those types of guys are easy to replace in my opinion. You can't really get much worse than those guys were this year. Almost anyone would be an upgrade, and you don't have to spend much money to do it. You can find cheap veterans who give you more production (i.e. Andre Carter over Calvin Pace) or guys late in the draft. I just disagree with the "cap hell" assessment. I don't think the Jets are in cap hell at all. The only major issue they have is Sanchez because he is clearly not the answer and has a huge cap hit this year. But any GM that gets this job is going to get 3-4 years worth of security to install his philosophy and system and re-tool the roster. Guys like Revis, Cromartie, Holmes, Harris, Fergurson, and Mangold are building blocks for this team. Santio's contract doesn't look so bad if he has a halfway decent QB throwing him the ball and is puttin up 1200 yards and 10 TD's. And if you think those guys are so bad and draggin this team down, well most of them can be kicked to the curb after the 2013 season with little cap ramifications. I don't think the Jets need to be blown up and I can't see Rex or Woody going for a complete blow up/rebuild in 2013. Most likely the Jets will keep all these big name guys for 2013 and see how they perform. If they bomb and go 5-11, then Rex is likely out and the GM will be able to make those major changes to the roster. So if the new GM hates the core of this team after watching it on the field in 2013 and wants to blow it up, he can do just that without major salary cap ramifications: -Holmes can be cut in 2014 with $2.5 million of dead money and give you $8.25 million in cap savings -Harris can be cut in 2014 with a $2 million dead money charge and give you $5 million in cap savings -Sanchez can be cut in 2014 with $4.8 million of dead money and cap savings of $8.3 million -Cromartie can be cut in 2014 with a $1.25 million dead money charge and cap savings of $9.5 million -Revis will not hold out and therefore the final three years of his contract are going to void so he will be coming off the books after 2013 -Pouha can be cut in 2014 with a $1.17 million dead money charge and cap savings of $5.5 million Coples, Kyle Wilson, Wilkerson, Kenrick Ellis, Stephen Hill, Demario Davis, and Bilal Powell will all still be on their rookie deals going into 2014, all at very reasonable costs. People may say well some of those guys will need to be extended, to which I would reply "I hope so." I hope Coples and Hill and Wilkerson all develop into young stars who require long term contract extensions. But let's cross that bridge when we get there. A guy like Pouha can be cut and the money saved from that can be put towards extending Mo Wilkerson or Coples. A guy like Harris can be cut and the money saved can be used if an extension for Davis is needed. The only big money guys that can't go anywhere due to their cap ramifications are Mangold and Ferguson. But why would you want to get rid of them? Mangold is one of the best centers in football. Ferguson had a subpar year this year but is still one of the better and more athletic left tackles in football. These two are part of the solution, not the problem. That's by far the toughest part: Sanchez and that ridiculous extension given to him. I agree it's likely too big a hit to swallow this year. That's the only place the Jets are "hamstrung" in my opinion for 2013. Unless they go to Sanchez and say you can either accept a trade to another team that needs a QB and re-negotiate your contract or we are going to deactivate you and have you ride the bench all year. Sanchez could choose to just collect his money, but that wouldn't be wise if he's looking to set up his next contract and has faith in himself. If he believes in himself, he may consider taking a hit short term financially to go to another team and prove he's a starting caliber QB and get a long term deal from them. It's a long shot but that's really our only hope.
The fact is that the Jets' salary cap situation is a problem now. If it were all candy and flowers, Tanny wouldn't have been fired. You can have the best contract lawyer in the world, but if he is being advised by complete dimwit football minds, like Bradway and Cohen, you still end up in cap hell. Sucks, but it's the truth.
It's not like being a Jets GM is a one year job. Looking at those contracts coming off the books, this year and next year, there is no way a reasonable, thoughtful and rational (non TGG members) man turns down a GM job because of a temporary hindrance.
Ok, one more time..this is why the Jets have a problem...can they get under the cap, of course but at what expense? The Jets are currently 20 million over the cap..they have 20 free agents who do not count one penny towards that 140 million dollar number (that's why they are free agents)..here's the list: Yeremiah Bell Mike DeVito Braylon Edwards Nick Folk Shonn Greene Lex Hilliard Dustin Keller Laron Landry Brandon Moore Chaz Schilens Matt Slauson Bryan Thomas Jeff Cumberland Austin Howard Joshua Mauga Tanner Purdum Dedrick Epps Isaiah Trufant Darrin Walls Jordan White At least 9 of them started last year..they can cut Tebow, Pace, Scott and both Smiths and get to where they are about 12 million under the cap but now they have to sign 25 new players (20+5) to field a team..and what kind of team will that be when they do? If you don't think the Jets are in cap hell you are crazy..surprisingly enough several GM candidates do..I wonder why... Want to see something scary? Here is what the team looks like after the season when they dumped the practice squad and walkons back in..here we have 49 players and are not 20 million over the cap but 27..cut the 5 i mention above and add in some rookies from the draft and this may be the team we have next year...thanks Tannenbaum.. http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary13.html
Sure he is, if he thinks he can land another GM job, not only this year but in the next couple. I would not consider the Jets job to be one of the more desirable places to go in the NFL for various reasons.
What's going to happen is they will more then likely need to let players like Landry, Keller and Greene walk and field a team of lesser talented players and hope they overachieve. I don't see any way they don't attempt to move a Revis or Cromartie to try and free up some $. Having both of those guy is a luxury we just can't afford. We'll be a bad team with or without both of them, next season, why not try and make a move where subtracting one top tier player may afford you to sign 2 or 3 other players.
