The longer this search take, the more it magnifies the real problem!

I am waiting for the ESPN announcement stating the Jets have scheduled an interview with the head janitor at Florham Park. At least he has experience taking the trash out of the facility already, so cleaning this mess up isn't that big of a stretch!

Seriously though, this is a bit disturbing. The Jets are now embarking on interviews with what appears to be their third tier of candidates for the GM position.

They did due diligence to identify their top candidates which have not panned out. Several have accepted jobs elsewhere and others have declined interviews.

It is clear that the common denominator on this is not the multiple candidates but Woody Johnson himself. I think Woody has done a good job putting together the new facility in Floral Park and at least made the big effort to get us our own stadium despite local political backlash.

That being said, he needs to take a step back now and hire a professional football man to run the entire football operation. The fact that he can't even make a decision after two weeks with the assistance of a highly respected sports management placement firm is highly disconcerting. This fiasco is turning into Hess-ian proportions the longer it drags out.

Unfortunately, I don't think the NFL is going to intervene to turn this mess around. The results on the field speak for themselves. This franchise has a .500 record since Johnson took the team over. This is fools gold for Jets fans because we are conditioned to root for a crappy team so much, that these results look like a golden age of Jets football. Any where else this would be unacceptable. The only common denominator through 2 GMs, 4 coaches, and carousel of QBs is Woody Johnson.

It is time for Woody to borrow that Parcellian mirror and check out the man in the mirror. That is the person who is truly the problem and if he truly wants to fix it, it is time to stop meddling and let professionals run this team. Organizational failure starts at the top and this is an organization in dissarray.

    Let's play musical GM candidates

If you're following along at home, you're probably confused by the Jets' search for a new general manager. Consider this a public service, catching you up on the comings and goings:

    SCHEDULED FOR INTERVIEWS

    Jerry Angelo, former Bears GM

    Brian Gaine, Dolphins assistant GM

Omar Kahn, Steelers director of football and business administration

    HOLDING PATTERN: ALREADY INTERVIEWED, WAITING

    Scott Cohen, Jets assistant GM

Tom Gamble, 49ers director of player personnel

Marc Ross, Giants director of college scouting

    GONE, GOODBYE: HIRED ELSEWHERE

Dave Caldwell (Jaguars), former Falcons director of player personnel

Tom Telesco (Chargers), former Colts vice president of football operations

    SORRY, NOT INTERESTED: DECLINED INTERVIEWS

    Eric DeCosta, Ravens assistant GM

Jimmy Raye, Chargers director of player personnel

    YES AND NO: CANCELLED INTERVIEW

    Tom Heckert, former Browns GM

IN LIMBO: STILL INTEREST BUT EXPECTED TO GO ELSEWHERE

John Dorsey, Packers director of football operations

Good stuff,,,can't argue with it . One thing that really bothers me is that you sometimes get the impression that the GM search just started last week AFTER they fired Tanny but in reality it should have began a month or so ago . If they were unable to contact guys for whatever reason so be it but this Chinese firedrill is a joke,,,,,,,,btw I still believe Cohen is The guy they want,,,said it from day 1 :breakdance:

Maybe the Jets haven't found anyone that jumped off the page at them and want to continue to evaluate candidates to make sure they do a thorough search? We haven't heard of them making any offers.

There's no doubt about it. I've talked to several friends and business colleagues from DC and Chicago in the last few days and they've even asked me what's the deal with the Jets not having a GM in place already? And I can assure you these are not even remote Jets fans. It just highlights what everyone has been saying about typical Jets getting it wrong.

Woody Johnson CLEARLY doesn't give a sh*t about what the fans think and definitely doesn't hear our input. When does the PSL protest start? Woody is at best an apathetic owner who cares more about publicity than he does building a winning franchise(see Tebow). The worst part is, the Jets controlled this outcome. They could've had Caldwell if they didn't wait so long and they could've had a new OC in place by now. Yet instead, they're dragging their feet as usual. The blame for this falls squarely on Woody. We need a new Owner. Why is it so hard for the Jets to figure out basic sh*t that the majority of the other 32 teams in the NFL typically get right? They're an institutional abortion. Let's see what second or third choice scrub GM we end up with. And you can be sure as hell the Jets brass will paint this new hire as if it was their first choice LOL.

I agree with your opinion on Woody being a problem but I think it's more Woody's man crush on Rex that is the problem.
I don't think there are many GM's that would look at Rex and want to have him as their HC.
Obviously that's just my opinion but its one I feel pretty confident in.

We've beat this topic to death but I really don't see any "hot candidate" wanting to be a figure head as the GM, and having to deal with Rex having equal or even more power then he does.
Past contracts have left us in cap hell and it's also a market where fans are not patient and want results now.

Add all this up and you don't really have the most attractive situation to be involved with.

But wouldn't it be a much better plan if they just hired they guy that all the fans on a website think is the best candidate?

I think the more likely scenario is that the owner doesn't like what they are telling him:

    - The team has no QB.
    - The team will be in cap hell in 2013 if you want to have an opportunity to be competitive in 2015.
    - Build through the draft with ALOT of draft picks (meaning no splashy trade-ups).
    - No splashy FA signings.
    - Darrelle Revis needs to be traded this year.
    - Expect the product on the field next year to even worse than it was this year.

All of us can see. There is no way in hell respected football executives aren't seeing this. The only thing is that Woody can't see it and unfortunately his decision is all that matters. He is waiting to interview the candidate that is prepared to blow smoke up his rear and tell him what he wants to hear.

Yes, especially the most over reactive emo fans I've ever seen. The owner MUST listen to them!

So your stance is that Woody doesn't like any of the candidates because they're telling him the truth about the circumstances of the situation? I just want to make sure I have it right.

I agree with this. Poor ownership is at the root of the Jets organizational woes. I fear that until Woody Johnson sells the team or hires someone who can effectively run the entire organization, the Jets will continue to be a revolving door of also-rans.

The Jets have spent the non-Parcells years of Woody Johnson's tenure as Jets owner looking like a bunch of amateurs. They play musical chairs in the FO instead of ever really cleaning house to solve the real issue in the organization.

Hell, before they kicked Tanny to the curb, they were rumored to be trying to keep him in-house as the CAP guy. They will probably end up hiring Scott Cohen for the job, because no blue-chip GM candidate wants FO people forced on him, nor will he want a CS forced on him. Good old Scott Cohen, the guy that was fresh through the door and orchestrated the coup that was the Lito Sheppard trade with his old Eagles contacts.

The gist of that article is correct. Woody Johnson is the real problem with this team. And they can't fire him.

The Jets may come out of this an have a playoff year, maybe two. Then they will go back the where they are now, where they were in 2008, where they were in 2005. Mediocrity or worse.

This team will never have sustained success when Woody Johnson is involved.

Guys this is a huge decision and something you shouldn't rush, however we should have been contacting guys earlier, example Tom Telesco, who would have been great for us but we requested an interview after he was already a finalist for a job

At this point in time I can come up with no other logical conclusion.

We can't on one hand say that the whole Tebow fiasco, or PSLs, or Brett Favre trade, jersey sales, etc, are driven by an owner motivated by fleecing the fans AND on the other say that he is engaged in a rational search for a GM willing to do what it takes - ticket sales be damned - to rebuild the team.

Which strongly points to woody not getting his $200k worth on the firm he hired to run the search.

if we hired someone right away the fans would whine "we didn't look at enough candidtates! why is Woody hiring the first guy he talks to?", now we had 1 favorite(Caldwell) who chose another place and they have opened it up to numerous candidtates and yet there is more whining. No matter what they do Jet fans will always complain.

None of us have any idea how good any of these candidtates will do if hired, the proof will be in the results 2-3 years down the road. Can we stop whining for 5 minutes and see what happens?

Amazing how the years seem to all blend together. I forgot all about Lito. Probably worth the price at the time, but still.....

  19. So the only logical conclussion you & others can come to happens to be the most negative scenario?

It can't possibly be that the Jets are taking their time to find the right candidate. We've heard no indications of any offers being made & we've also seen 2 other franchises hire Gms from within after appearing to be lukewarm on the available candidates. Frankly, I'd be MORE upset if the jets panicked & hired the first guy willing to take 2 interviews.

All this Woody hatred..every ounce of it from this fan base is purely speculative. There is absolutely no direct knowledge or data to suggest that Woody doesn't care about winning, is incompetent or is the root of the Jets problem. It's an assumption made to make someone the scapegoat for the Jets lack of success.

In all actuality the data suggests the contrary. Many sources have indicated that Woody wants to win badly.Additionally he's spent a large chunk of change to try & upgrade this franchise. He's built arguably the best facilities in the NFL, built a new stadium, & has spent money to bring prime free agents in.

I'm just as miserable as the rest of you.The years of losing/disappointment suck. I just don't understand why their MUST be a scapegoat & why it has to be someone who appears to have his priorities in the right place

Can we just wait until we get a GM to start running around yelling how the world is ending and the Jets suck?

Yes Woody wants to get money, but now that he heard people are turning down PSLs, etc maybe he's looking more carefully to gearing up to build a long lasting franchise. Why do people act like Woody won't change at all as an owner and learn and grow?
