I do a lot of mocks, but I simply enjoy it. they are constantly changing. a few things up front: - we extend Revis and re-sign Landry. - trade Cromartie to Houston for a 3 & 6 - trade Tebow to Jax for a 6 giving us 1(1), 1(2), 2(3), 1(4), 1(5), 3(6), 1(7) minus the compensatory picks of course. 01: Chance Warmack (OG, Alabama) - safe pick for us. Chance is a beast and two of our guards might not be back next year. putting him next to Austin Howard on the line will be a huge plus. excellent run blocking/pass protection. none of Notre Dame's front 7 got even close to McCarron. 02: Tyler Eifert (TE, Notre Dame) - I hope Dustin Keller isn't back next season. I see Eifert falling to the second round. Ertz will probably be the first TE off the board and I see ATL going after Finley or even Keller. Eifert is a huge target and made a few plays on Dee Milliner. would be a great weapon for whoever is playing QB for us next season. 03: Montee Ball (RB, Wisconsin) - Shonn Greene likely gone, we need to add an explosive playmaking RB to fill his spot. Montee Ball has been the whole Wisconsin offense. I think we can grab him in the third no problem. Eddie Lacy's stock will skyrocket. 03: Phillip Thomas (S, Fresno State) - Phillip Thomas is my favorite safety in this draft class. he's just what we need at the position, a ballhawk. a pairing with Landry locks down the backfield for us. he also had a few forced fumbles this season, tremendous talent. 04: Quinton Patton (WR, Louisiana Tech) - we need more receivers. once Holmes went down we were kept bringing in new guys every week only to cut them the next. Patton had a phenomenal year and has great hands. I see him as a slot guy for us next year but moving to the outside after we ship off Holmes. 05: Quanterus Smith (DE, Western Kentucky) - great value in the 5th round. Q had 12.5 sacks this year and recorded 3 of them against Alabama, so you know he can get to the QB. he would obviously be playing OLB for us with Pace, Scott, etc gone. 06: Braxston Cave (C, Notre Dame) - I like Cave, he was a huge part of ND's rushing attack and he would be a great backup for Nick Mangold. he could use work, so learning behind Mangold will benefit him immensely. 06: Michael Mauti (ILB, Penn St) - Mauti is one of the best ILB in the draft unfortunately for him he got injured at the end of the season, so his stock will fall. perfect time for the Jets to grab him. he won't get many starting snaps, primarily a ST player at first unless Harris or Davis goes down, but in the long run will replace Harris, because he's costing us an arm and a leg. 06: Philip Lutzenkirchen (TE, Auburn) - I always have Lutz in my drafts in the late rounds because I strongly believe that's where he will go. Cumberland is a good back-up, but a Eifert/Lutz combo is deadly. whoever our QB is next year will have lots of weapons. Lutz has solid hands and a pretty good run blocker. 07: Dustin Hopkins (K, Florida State) - Nick Folk isn't cutting it, forget that Norweigan trick kicker. I say we draft our new kicker in the 7th. Hopkins has been one of the best kickers all season, 24/28. strong leg.
I love the enthusiasm. But no RT? And sorry, - but this roster is so bad we dont have the luxury to draft Nick Mangold's replacement. I'll roll the dice on Mangold getting hurt to focusing on more pressing needs.
You aren't going to fill a starting spot with a 5th round pick? And what backup slot is more empty than center? not many. Anyone who could legitimately contribute from the fifth on is worthwhile.
Sorry, Jack -- I dont understand your post. Are you asking me if we can fill a starting spot w/a 5th rounder or telling me? If you're asking, ---- yes, can always find someone in the 5th (J. Kerley for example). We have Caleb Schlauderoff who can backup Mangold. Not competently, but he's just as good as anyone we'd draft w/a 6th rounder. So lets get something else.
he wouldn't be Mangold's replacement. Cave is still pretty green. Mangold could teach him alot. we have no depth at center, it's just Mangold. and I didn't select a RT because I felt Austin Howard is good for the time being, and with Chance Warmack being next to him will help out a lot. Jake Matthews would have been my pick if he came out, but he's most likely staying his senior year.
Taylor Lewan could be the answer to our prayers if he is there at #9. But agree w/you ---- passing on Warmack would not be cool. This is the dilemma we face.
I think Lewan will go to Arizona, they will look for a QB in FA or in the second round. so many choices for us I would be happy with either one.
I would not trade a pro-bowl shut down cornerback for a 3rd and a 6th to an AFC team that already has a great defense. Give me at least a 2nd.
Sorry, didn't mean for that question mark to be there. I meant that we aren't going to find somebody in the fifth round that we can count on to fill a hole on the starting roster. It's always possible someone like Kerley develops into something, or more, but it isn't likely and you definitely can't count on it. I think the best thing to do is look late is look for guys who you really think can play in the NFL, and completely disregard need. If that's a center, which we could use a backup for, that's fantastic. I wouldn't not draft a center in order to draft an OLB in the fifth because we need an OLB.
Love all the picks, well done, but yeah Cromartie for a 3rd and 6th? I want atleast a 2nd and 4th, considering we gave up a 2nd to get him, and he just played at a probowl level, a guy who can replace Cromartie is David Amerson, Blidi Wreh-Wilson, or Xavier Rhodes
