It's not as simple as just looking at the title of "DC," you have to look at the responsibilities. Doug Marrone stated that he will not be calling plays on either side of the ball or meddling with the coordinators. Instead, he will be more of a manager or CEO of the team, and set the vision and flow of the game and season. Under this approach, Pettine (or any DC) has free rein to call their own plays and implement their desired system without someone breathing down their neck. We all know Rex has controlled this defense. Although the title of DC is the same, Pettine has a much greater opportunity in Buffalo as the coordinator.

On the same day that the Bills formally introduced Doug Marrone as their new head coach, the News confirmed that the Jets’ division rivals requested permission to speak to Mike Pettine for their defensive coordinator job. The Jets granted permission.

Pettine turned down a contract extension offer from the Jets earlier in the season and is under contract only through the end of the January.

It would be a coup for the Bills to get the Jets’ defensive play caller, whose unit finished in the Top 5 in total defense from 2009-2011 before ranking eighth this season.

    Jets granted the Bills permission.

You have to understand who wrote the article... it was Manish Mehta who is Pettine's basketball buddy and "unnamed source". Of course he is going to say great things about him.

3.................2.........................1................. Well he does know some stuff,But it works both ways. We should be able to know what he is gonna do to

  7. Both parties should want to part as soon as possible. Why would the Jets want that type of poison around again? He betrayed the entire organization's trust. He can never be counted on again.

Life around Florham Park can't be too pleasant for Pettine now that he's been outed. If he wants to save his career & reputation he needs a complete makeover. Not sure if staying in the AFC East is in his best interest.

In addition to Rex/Pettine, there was another dynamic duo once names Parcells/Belicheck.

Like Rex, Parcells was credited as being a defensive genius while Belicheck toiled in the shadows. The instant Belicheck saw an opportunity to escape the dark side and enter the light he high tailed it so fast to NE it made Hess' head spin, like in the Exorcist.

Once Belicheck left, we found out pretty quick who the real genius was. And it wasn't Parcells.

Could the same thing happen to Rex? What if our defense plummets with the departure of Pettine?

Fool me twice, shame on me.

Just as Mangini, McDaniels, and Crenell couldn't teach their teams every nuance of the Patriots' playbook, nor will Pettine be able to teach the Bills how to hack the Jets.

Playbooks are fluid in the NFL. With very few exceptions (like Bill Callahan not bothering to change Gruden's offensive signals before coaching against him in the Super Bowl,) having coached a team in the past won't be a make or break in the future.

Belicheck's genius was stepping in shit with Brady.

Parcells turned around how many shitty teams including ours?

Belichek wasn't so hot before Brady and his defenses are not so vaunted either. But he has won many games and that's what counts.

Alright, I've looked around and I don't understand all "rat" references in regards to Pettine. Is there an article that I'm missing? Is this all an assumption by this fan base.. I feel stupid and I will continue to look but that would blow my mind if there is any truth to that.

Stupid comment. Nobody succeeds alone. Parcells has helped turn trash franchises into contenders multiple times.

Every coach/player that's labeled a "winner" has had good people around them also.

As expected, the Bills have hired Mike Pettine as defensive coordinator. Pettine had been with Jets previous four seasons.
