Taken from today's NYPost: http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/jet_fans_agony_of_da_seat_WYQbF841gstG9ElHn4hfZN Now, we can assume that these are all total lies and fabrications made up by a vengeful media simply to discredit the New York Jets. Unfortunately, we all know that you can get huge discounts on Jets gameday tickets online bypassing normal channels so blaming the media for this story would be extreme Homerism. This story has truth behind it. Go to StubHub and take a peek and you'll see it right before your lying eyes. This is a pretty good example of the continuing devaluation of the Jets Brand. This is where it's going to get Woody's attention. Nobody knows if Rex cares or not, but his actions have a direct affect on the value of the Brand on whole. I'm sure at some point management will, just like they did after footgate, have the discussion with Rex over his eccentricities. Just like the spoiled kid that grows up and doesn't change, what was funny at age 5 isn't funny anymore at age 15. Same goes for Rex. What was funny in years 1&2 ain't funny anymore. Especially when your record since the glory days of the 2 back to back, AFCCG losses is 14-18 and not looking too good going forward. For those of you that want to give Rex 10 more years, I'm thinking selfishly that as far as the decline in ticket prices goes, if he stays on that long I might be able to afford to go to a home game and get a pretty good seat. I don't think Woody can stand to take the economic hit that's sure to come with the devaluation. At some point, he'll start to lose money and what's the over/under on him going along with that just to keep Rex Ryan around as HC of the NYJ's? Loyalty stops at the accountant's desk. Inspite of what Woody says about Rex, you have to think its those 2 years left on his deal and the 6mil for 2013 that's keeping Rex in the organization. Thoughts anyone?
The concept of PSL's is ridiculous in the 1st place (from a consumer perspective), but that's been rehashed a 1000 times......... some people were just slower to realize :shit:
Personally, I don't see the point of PSL's at all. No matter how successful your team is. I can't imagine paying something along the lines of 20,000 a year to sit in a football stadium for eight games. I'd sooner go to a sports bar or something (but then again, I'm only a college student). How it relates to Woody, I think the fan reaction would be much, much, much worse if Rex leaves but Sanchez stays. If it's the other way around, you'll have a few people leaving, but more will stay due to Rex's success. I don't think there are many Jets fans going 'I'M GIVING UP FOREVER ON THE JETS!!!! WE WENT 6-10 AND REX HAS A SLIGHTLY CREEPY TATTOO AND A FOOT FETISH!'. Especially considering that apparently Kottie failed to win that many games in his two years with the Jets.
In a marketplace dominated by a proliferation of easily available cheap tickets the PSL holders just look like chumps. The Jets need to make their tickets valuable enough that having a PSL that guarantees you the right to buy tickets is worth something. This is a tip of the iceberg issue at this point. If the Jets continue to decline their whole revenue model is going to go out of whack. They've spent a lot of money in the last 5 years to try to grow revenues and accumulated a lot of debt in the process.
tickets at good prices can be found for any team thanks to the secondary market today, when they stink the prices drop dramatically. this isn't breaking news.
Having the teams revenue and value based on performance as oppossed to some other variable is a great thing. Wealthy fans should consider the ownership before investing in PSL's.
I'm one of those fans looking to dump my PSL's. Tickets are much cheaper on the secondary market and I can get better seats, besides not being pressured to attend every game. PSLs should be illegal if you ask me.
Anybody who bought them had to know this would happen with the history of this franchise. Why do you think we are seeing only now that we are 20 million over on the cap for only 39 players, the PSLs are all sold.
The PSL equation just doesn't make sense, just to start like I said in the PSL thread the mere fact that they force you to buy preseason games is a total dealbreaker for me. There is no chance I would ever even consider a PSL with that requirement. They charge you full price for maybe 1/6th of play time with legitimate starters & playcalling in a game that doesn't count. The money lost in those games fucks up the economics of getting a PSL before you even consider the face values, which are also too high. With everybody owning a large flat panel TV, going to less games is a no-brainer People gon' be walking away from their PSL payments in droves this offseason
every team charges for preseason games, the Jets were one of the last nto to require season ticket holders to buy preseason.
I like the argument now, (after the fact) that PSL's are crap and shoud be illegal. Why did you buy it back then? (Oh yea, the Jets went to back to back AFCCG). I suppose the law needs to protect us from ourselves and realize that we are inherently stupid.
The dilemma facing any sports franchise right now is that while they control primary pricing of their events the secondary market controls access to those events. The revenue related to seating is fixed at the number of seats sold by the team at primary price levels. However as long as there are still unsold seats for a game the secondary market, which is reselling seats already sold by the team, controls the prices on the majority of those unsold seats. So the secondary market is a net loser for teams in terms of actual revenue related to seating. It has positive effects also, in that people who would otherwise not attend the game buy other things at the game which the team derives revenue from, however the net effect of the secondary market is probably negative on the team's revenues. The secondary market also puts downward pressure on ticket prices because people are less likely to purchase tickets from the team at full price if there are widely available cheaper alternatives. The pressure on the team, which may or may not be happening to the Jets at the moment, is that in order to sell out the stadium they have to make tickets available at a discount themselves in order to take into account the widely available secondary market prices. The only answer to the downward price pressures of the secondary market is to sell out the stadium at consistent prices on a regular basis. Doing that gives the team all of the primary seating revenue that they can possibly derive from the event. Doing that maintains the value of the tickets in the secondary market, since people selling their tickets on the secondary market are no longer under pressure themselves to discount heavily to sell the tickets. Once a market develops for an item the people participating in that market are ultimately going to control the price of the item. Particularly when the item has a sunk cost that cannot be recovered. The Jets really need to do a better job of creating a high quality product that sells itself easily. If they don't do that other people will market the product as their needs dictate and the Jets will be an observer of the process instead of controlling it.
Used to have what is now considered " coaches club" seats, sec111 2&3rd row behind Jets bench for 29yrs. Now 221A
The tattoo isn't the only thing driving this. There are so many factors going into the decline its really hard to catalog all of them. If you're making the kind of investment in entertainment these PSL owners are making, you expect professionalism and a quality product. The conversation most likely would go something like: "WTF am I paying all this money for...?" As the quality of the product on the field deteriorates, so will the value of the PSL's, the tickets, the swag, The Brand. Ryan's little foibles don't help and if you're not helping, you're hurting. Ryan's not the only reason for the decline, but his antics off the field certainly aren't helping things. Not at these prices anyway.. We won't even bring the Credit hit any defaulting fan would incur by doing this.
a 15 year payment plan to go watch football? That's funny. The in person experience doesn't even compare to the at home experience.
