Matt will come relatively cheaply vs some of the overrated QBs like Vick and Smith so he'll have some options. He's been burned once by Sparano not opening up competition instead anointing Henne which was a huge mistake so he will not go anywhere where he's not assured a legitimate opportunity to compete for the starting job. Considering RR's blind devotion to Sanchez and how Stanton was lied to, Moore might feel he has better options - especially since he, like most everyone else, knows he's a better QB and leader than Mark could ever be. Personally I hope he goes out of the division to someplace like Jacksonville, KC or AZ.

Sadly I agree. Rex has no idea how to evaluate a QB, which is why he is so myopic in his reliance on practice.

The Jets players can say whatever they want (btw, can Matt Slauson shut his mouth for once? All pro yapper on an average player) but they would be tickled pink to have a guy with the guts and moxie of Moore. He's no All Pro but this team doesn't need an All Pro because of the defense and running game.

the bold is true but with his contract he is uncuttable/untradeable. So the next best thing is making him inactive.

Imagine if you will the Jets at 3-6 next year with whoever playing QB. Sanchez is inactive and has been all year and everybody is getting antsy. The players are unhappy and the locker room is fragile, as usual.

Rex is looking at getting fired at the end of the season and he's unhappy with the organization's "No Sanchez" edict. He thinks he's being forced to play whoever when he has a better option on the bench.

Sanchez has been a good trooper because he's getting paid through the nose to watch games from the sideline and he wants to preserve his options after the Jets cut him at the end of the season. However with the team on the ropes he's looking to get back in the game.

    Enter the tabloid press...

Seriously, with the season the Jets are likely to have next year there's no room for a high profile inactive QB on the roster. His presence is just going to cause problems that the Jets would rather not have.

And god help us if he actually gets put in at some point and looks better than he has for the last couple of seasons.

If the Jets want to make Sanchez inactive in '13 to avoid the cap hit from cutting him they could just throw him on IR with some mystery injury and avoid all that nonsense.

Only if Sanchez is willing to go along with that. Otherwise he can file a claim with the players union

The difference on the cap between cutting Sanchez on June 1st and cutting him in 2014 is negligible. There is literally no reason not to cut him next year if the Jets plan is to have him be inactive in any way.

If they cut him June 1st they take a high 12's cap hit in 2013 and a mid 4's cap hit in 2014. If they cut him after the season they take a high 12's cap hit in 2013 and a high 4's cap hit in 2014.

Once the Jets have made the decision not to use Mark Sanchez next year keeping him around has virtually the same impact on the cap as cutting him. The only difference if they cut him is the tabloid aspect of the Mark Sanchez - Rex Ryan - Jets Locker Room saga goes away.

Who is to say that will happen? No one wants him back regardless, and believe me if it was possible to cut him it would be the move the Jets make. They cut him now and they don't have money to work with.

The difference between keeping Mark Sanchez next year and cutting him on June 1st is basically nothing. The cap looks almost the same if you keep him or cut him on June 1st.

So the only argument for keeping him is that you will get some value out of him moving forward, either on the field next year or in a trade or by convincing him somehow to take a pay cut that reduces his cap hit for the season and moving forward.

Two of those scenarios likely include Mark Sanchez playing, on the field, for the Jets next season. The third, that he might be traded, seems remote given his current value.

As of June 1st we know what effect Mark Sanchez is going to have on the Jets cap. It's written in stone at that point if no other moves have been made in the interim. I think it's probably best for the Jets to move on at that point. They will lose nothing for the year or 2014 except the possibility of Mark Sanchez playing for them.

    Think about it.

If it essentially costs the JETS the same to keep him vs cut him, then it's cheaper to keep him as a backup QB on the bench, as they'll have to pay another body a few mil to do that......

They have Greg McElroy to be the backup QB and he's not costing them a couple of million.

true, but do you think they only carry 2 QBs? especially considering QB1 will most likely NOT be star quality.......

It's a mess of a situation either way, and is probably the main reason Tannenbaum was shown the door.

And let's not underestimate how big of an aspect that is. This alone could bring a lot more stability to the entire franchise.

So are you saying that there is basically ZERO difference on the Jets cap number if they keep Sanchez as a backup next year or if they wait to cut him until after the 2013 season? I thought that there was huge cap relief if we kept him through the 2013 season and then dumped him? To me, this was the only compelling reason to keep him on the roster next year.

The Jets will probably sign a vet to play for them next year and may well have a developmental third QB from the draft.

Most likely scenario, especially with a new GM...... but who knows what to expect with this team.

The differences as I understand them looking at nyjetscap.com:

If the Jets cut Sanchez now they save about $500K on the cap over the next two seasons because they don't have to pay Sanchez his workout bonus. The total hit for doing that is $17.15 million.

If they cut Sanchez on June 1st then they have paid the $500K bonus and they take a hit somewhere between 12.603 and 12.853 million on next year's cap. They then take a hit somewhere between 4.45 and 4.8 million the following year and he's off the books.

The fudge factor is that I don't know if his workout bonus next year is guaranteed or not and I don't know if it all hits next year's cap or if it can be split between 2013 and 2014 as the other prorated bonus can be.

If the Jets keep Sanchez next year his cap hits are listed as 12.853 million in 2013 and then 4.8 million when he is cut in 2014.

Good to know, thanks. So there's about a $4.5 million difference in cap hit between cutting him now versus doing it next year, or after June 1st. That's a very tough call. I'm kind of torn as that $4.5 million savings could get them a nice FA this offseason.

If that's the case I misunderstood the situation. I thought that 4 million would accelerate into the '13 cap.

Why is it that when players play well they ask for pay raises and negotiate based on how they have played, and how they promise to try to play in the future, but when they don't play well the team can't negotiate against bad play and the guaranteed money? With what Sancho has done, and what he hasn't done, our cap is frigged. He should be made by the players union to give 80% of his money back! It won't happen, so tanny is the man to blame for our money issues, and Nacho is to be blamed for our crappy offense. These two men suck! Glad one of them is gone, and the other is to follow. Maybe they plan on retiring together on sanchize's salary?
