fine if they ask the candidate to consider rex or even posit a better coach. the jets should be keeping an open mind. a gm candidate may have a good coaching candidate in mind. but any candidate who doesn't have a candidate in mind who just wants to dump rex probably is more power-hungry than necessary. but if a potential gm has a good coach in mind, the jets should be all-ears! i like rex and hope he stays, but if a new gm knows of a better coach, then i'd be interested.

We have heard a lot of talk of guys the Jets have asked to interview - all of whom are basically a "who's who" of GM candidates. We haven't heard of any guys turning down interviews that I know of.

You guys are making way too big a deal about retaining Rex for one year. It actually might work out better for a new, young and coming GM. He gets a one year free pass, he can immidiately focus on the draft and not worry about the selection process for a new HC, and gets the benefit of some stability with the players during the transition. He can also spend time on bringing in a new OC, a Special teams guro and may be a DC.
If that does not work he can fire Rex and replace him with someone in the new staff at year end. Besides there will be 7 more coaches probably canned next year to pick frm.

I think keeping Rex for a year will not be a deterrent for a GM to come in. At the end of the day they know it'll only be a 1 year trial period.

I do however think it will make it difficult to bring in high quality assistant coaches. No way Norv is coming here for essentially one year.

Agree completely. A GM job is one of the most sought after in all of football. There's only 32 of them. If you think you have what it takes and want the challenge you'd accept any GM job that's open regardless of its limitations. In fact, if you thrived given those limitations (aka Rex for a yr, Sanchez's bad contract) you'd be looked at like a freakin' God in the NFL circles.

There are four other openings. The best GM who does not want Ryan as his coach will end up in one of those positions.

How do you define best GM? Is there a consensus guy that's out there right now that is unanimously praised as the best GM candidate. I don't think there is.

good point. the new gm is basically getting a critique-free year. if things go poorly, it's blamed on tannenbaum's morass. if things go well, the guy's a genius.

If a candidate isn't ok with Rex being here for atleast another year then he isn't getting the job, It obviously will be in his contract , That Rex stays for atleast one year , The only way Rex comes back after next season is if he takes us deep into the playoffs or wins the Superbowl anything short of that and he is done in NY, One and done in the playoffs might get him a new contract but im not sure

We're looking for a young up and comer instead of a stodgy old GM from another era. We aren't going to have to beg them to take the job. Rex for one year isn't a big deal really, after that they can hand pick their coach. It's a huge opportunity and although we're a joke we're still in the largest market and an opportunity a lot of these guys covet.

Yes you did. We all did.

Who's to say this short list is all the guys Woody Johnson has sought out? Maybe they have HAD people refuse interviews and this is what's left over - we don't know who all he's called. Also, maybe there is people they haven't bothered contacting because they know he wouldn't like to work with Rex. Maybe the consultant is telling Woody - I wouldn't call him, he's going to want to pick his own guy at HC.

My point to this whole thing is just why limit yourself at ALL over Rex Ryan.. It's not like he's the second coming or anything

I think listening to anything ESPN has to say about any NY team is to be really stupid.

Probably Gamble. He's the guy I want.

With that said, I would also be happy with Caldwell, Dorsey or Ross. If we get one of those four candidates I would be very please... I love the way the 49ers are built, the Falcons put a premium on having talent on the offense, and the Packers and Giants are both very well run and talented teams.

What is being aked is for the GM to come in to an organization with an existing loyalty and power structure. It is not just the head coach but also the assistants who owe their job to the HC because if he goes then most likely they will lose their jobs.

Rex will also have an existing relationship with the owner which can also reduce the control a new GM would have over operations.

Again, we've seen the Jets requesting interviews with the "who's who" list of GM candidates and haven't heard of any deny the interview (unless I missed something).

there is a picture of rex's tatoo on the front page of the paper today. if anyone declined an interview because of the rex stipulation i have to believe it would have been leaked out to every news source in the free world

I think one thing we have to remember is this is just a word on the street. Could be real, could not be.

If it is, I don't really think it is a huge deal. Rex has proven he can win, even though the team has fallen to shit the past two years. I think if the new gm brings in players this team could be successful. The New GM will have a free year of no credibility and if things don't work out, he can pull what the new bears GM did.

So far there are no reports of anyone turning down interviews with the Jets. The Jets are interviewing the "hot candidates" and are being linked to the best of the best right now. Seems like that hasn't slowed anyone down from trying to be GM here.
