I expect that kind of post from a homer like you. It's not the only GM job available. Do we want the best GM or not? Why should Woody substitute his football knowledge for someone who he supposedly is considering hiring for his football knowledge? If Ryan is so obviously great and seen so as such, why have to make this a requirement in the first place? The excuse making for Woody that goes on around here is laughable.
Agreed. There seems to be a written set of laws in the NFL that don't make much sense, one of them being "if you fire a GM the coach has to go too". My question to that is why? Let's say for argument sake that Woody interviews Ross and Ross tells Woody he will keep Rex as coach, so Woody hires him. Ross accepted the job under those terms therefore he is still accountable for Rex's results. If he doesn't want to be then be honest to Woody and tell him you won't take the job unless you can hire the new coach. Then if Woody decides he really wants Ross he has to agree to Rex being fired. Pretty simple. If Rex remains the coach after a new GM is hired then that GM agreed to the conditions that Woody put on the table (which Woody is entitled to do), either being you have to keep Rex for 1 year it least, or would you be willing to work with Rex with the answer from that GM obviously being yes.
Well the GM would have to get a free pass for a year if things don't work out - Woody would have to promise then that at the very least. If he doesn't workout this year, then blow it up and do whatever you see fit.
Rex isn't even a bad coach. It's not like Woody is saying "keep Kotite for a year" who is to say that the GM would have a problem keeping Rex? Plus under our circumstances Rex deserves another year to see if he can turn things around, the new GM will more than likely be here for 4/5 years. If Rex gets a reasonable talent upgrade and the team fails in '13 then I can understand him getting fired. I'm sure even the GM candidate knows that.
^^^This. We may miss out on candidates because we want to keep Rex. Some people may think it's "only a one year thing" but GMs understand that isn't true. Look at how many times the Giants were one year way from firing Tom Coughlin. If the new GM is forced to keep Rex, and Rex makes another deep playoff run, there is no way they can get rid of him. Then, whoever that GM is will be forced to deal with Rex, and that includes "The Circus". Some GMs will not want that. I like Rex, and I hate to see him (along with his defense) go. On the other hand, I don't want to be tied to a shitty GM for another 5-10 years.
While I think it's a good idea to give Rex one more chance, I completely disagree with extending coach for a year being a lithmus test for the new GM. Woody should find the best possible GM available. If the new guys thinks it's necessary to keep Rex -- good; to fire Rex -- also good. Get the best GM there is and let him decide the best course of actions.
oh god the HORROR of a deep playoff run for the team you are the general manager of! how could any gm candidate even answer the jets call with this implication?!
It's a mess for sure just as I predicted on Monday. You have the argument by the Rex apologists on here saying that the GM has nothing to lose by giving Rex at least one year to turn this around and if he doesn't, then they could get rid of Rex at the end of 2013. These same people also say the GM has nothing to lose as he'll most likely be here for 4 or 5 years. You can find a lot of flaws in that argument. First a GM could potentially have a lot to lose in that first year with Rex because you're only kidding yourself if you don't think that Woody Johnson expects results from this new GM from DAY 1. So if that GM hangs on to Rex and they tank again next year then you better believe that some of the luster will come off the Jets new GM. His reputation and image in Woody's eyes will be at least somewhat damaged because you can be sure that the NY media vultures will be ripping the new GM apart if the Jets do awful next year. And we all know how easily influenced Woody is by the media and outsiders (hence the Tebow debacle, etc). Secondly Rex doesn't deserve sh*t. You could say Lovie Smith deserved another chance because he took his team to a Super Bowl in the past and he was still 10-6 this year. That is deserving of another chance. In Rex's case two straight seasons of not meeting expectations doesn't entitle him to sh*t. If they decide to bring him back then fine. But to act like it's a no brainer that he deserves another chance is just indignant homerism at it's finest.
Are you in those meetings? Do you know what's being said? None of us do. To think that this isn't going to factor in to whether a GM wants the job or not is naïve. Actually we'll never truly know how much of an impact it has so we can only hope that they get the right guy for the job. I never said that they wouldn't get the right guy for the job, rather I'm saying that this could definitely be a big factor that could prevent them from getting the right guy for the job. Let's all hope it doesn't.
It may end up factoring into the decision of a potential GM, but their are some things we can assume now. Woody wanting to retain Rex isn't preventing these guys from coming in to interview. If they're coming in to interview I think it's safe to assume they're interested in the GM job, knowing that Rex is part of the deal. So keeping Rex on board is NOT scaring people away as many have suggested. If they have 2 offers on the table and one allows them to pick their own coach, that may have an impact on the final decision.
i dont understand why you would take any portion of the viable candidates out of it by making them keep rex for a year. someone was talking the other day about how well you keep him for a year, the team is going to be bad anyway with their cap issues and retooling. then you fire him next year. and at that point you will have wasted a year and the new guy will have to come in and build the team at that point instead of being a year ahead. listen, i dont give a shit either way if rex is here. i think he does a decent job. i am against not letting the gm make the decisions you are hiring him to make. thats a big fucking problem. and there will be guys who are not interested because its their job to run the football operations and be the manager of them.
We don't know who they might have asked to come in and have been turned down by. I'm fine with keeping Rex, but it's easy to see how a GM candidate might not be ok with it.
again, why is there a need to insist candidates accept Ryan if there's a widespread perception that Ryan is a good HC? And if there is no such thing, which would seem to be the point of such insistence, then that means two things. First it means Woody is substituting his football judgment, which at this point is a laughable concept, for the person he is hiring to run the team based on their football knowledge. Second it means the Jets might not hire the best candidate available if that person does not want Ryan as his HC. If Ryan were seen as a great HC, and all the blame for the the poor performance of hte last two years was on Tanny, there would be no need to insist candidates accept Ryan. They would want to keep him anyway. It is instead precisely because Ryan is damaged goods in the eyes of the football world that Woody would have to insist in the first place. But again, the homers here will try and twist it into no big deal. It is a big deal. And it is another example of what a crap owner WOody is.
Also some candidates may self select out of the interview process if they think going in that Woody will insist they accept Ryan when they don't want to. We won't even know if that is happening, except when some better qualified candidate does not interview with the Jets and lands somewhere else.
