Could we actually have brought Lewis in here or is that just a matter of what he could afford to do? Because if we could have afforded either and he chose Scott, then yeah, I want him out even more. Tough choice: an all-time great, first ballot hall of famer who like a franchise QB makes players around him better, is intimidating to the other team, and inspires those around him through his leadership..........or Bart Scott with his big mouth. Then again, this is Rex Ryan and his big mouth we're talking about. I guess I'm not surprised.
Bellicheck left for a very good reason: he felt the organization was without direction and that his hiring was just a stop gap. He put his resignation on a napkin, for crying out loud! Carrol, Groh, Mangeri all got ran out of town. My point /argument is that the Jets org has not shown the patience it is required to get the ship on the straight path. Coaching change after coaching change , it shows it's ugly face time after time. Carrol would have been an excellent coach had they showed this. He went to USC and made a great go of it.
Oh they had plans for the future. They drafted them. Unfortunately none of them have any playmaking ability. What the Jets did was basically use draft picks to plug holes w/o worrying about salary structure, the need for competition,or roster depth. When guys didn't develop as planned there was no way out
There are two separate issues: Is Rex a good HC? and Is there someone better than Rex out there? There are lots of good candidate, names that are well known and names that aren't. To say there isn't anyone better than Rex is silly. Bill Cowher, an Andy Reid, just to name a few. People on this board love to point out the AFCC one was with a team Mangini built the other got lucky to even get in as a wildcard. That year when Rex said we were out of the playoffs and was wrong. Everyone loves to fawn over Rex defense. Have you seen his vaunted D of late? How about against the worst team in the AFC, the Bills. How many big plays have they given up? What's his D ranked compared the rest of the league. This from a team who has spent most of its money and draft picks on the defensive side. I really shouldn't have to explain why Rex is bad it's pretty obvious. Rex apologists are like Tebowmanics, no point in trying to talk sense. The question isn't Is there anyone better? It's are you willing to take the short term hit of having someone new come in and install a new system. If Sanchez was developing I'd say don't break the continuity. But he's done. Now the perfect time to clean house and start over. Bring in a HC who's not learning on the job.
first. the team that got lucky was manginis team that rex took 9-7 without the h.o.f. qb mangini had the year prior.the next year he was 11-5 and firmly in the w.c. spot. they rested most of the starters week 7 second. gruden and cowher are not leaving the booth. they are done, the fire doesn't burn for them anymore. if they wanted back in they would say so and watch owners throw blank checks at them. so that basically leaves some up and comer learning on the job. well we already have him and he has 4 years o.j.t. he has 1 losing season and absolutely deserves a 1 year audition with the new g.m. besides if they hired a new h.c. now the whole board will be calling for his head before the new g.m.can turn over the bad contracts and start shaping the roster the way he wants.
I'm not saying the team was built to last I'm just saying that that IF Rex was picking players, he knew what pros he wanted to go after I don't agree that Tanny/Mangini did better at stocking a team than Tanny/Rex, which I believe was the original post. And I don't agree that Tanny dropped off because of REx's input
According to this article: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/19771/the-jets-next-gm-is The word on the street is that the jets are telling potential GMs that they won't be considered unless they agree to keep Rex as the HC.
You mean lack of personnel on defense, don't you? Our d carried us that far, aided by our running game. Sancho just managed the game with minimal mistakes. Our d is better for the long term now, but our Qb couldn't help us win a pop Warner game! Big difference
The fact that you said 'vaunted defense' just shows me u listen to Francessa too much. The D ranked tied for 7th this year. Every team ahead of them made playoffs except Bears, who won 10 games. First time we were outside top 5 rank, without best player and an offense who put the D on the field way too much. The D is playoff caliber. Your Mangini comment is off too. Mangini with almost exact D personell ranked around 18th in the league in 08. In 09 Rex had same D ranked number 1 by far in almost every category. If Mangini helped build the team, then Rex helped coach it. The problem this year was terrible QB play, terrible QB personnel, complete lack of imagination on Offense to work around the injuries and terrible QB play, and terrible ST execution. If you are going to knock Rex for anything, make it the selection of Sparano, and inability to intervene when the offense went south. All that said, i'd retain Rex at least another year while we address offensive personnel, OC, and search for that next QB. A playoff caliber D is only thing holding the fort right now, and i'm not willing to gut it with a new coach/scheme. Another shitty season next year, and then i'd be calling for HC change.
Well duh, considering your biggest reasons for wanting Rex gone are "his loud mouth" and a bunch of other speculative nonsense that you couldn't possibly know without being connected to the team. And here we go again. You are talking out of your backside and ignoring points like I dunno, THE ENTIRE SECOND HALF. They weren't ready? Is that seriously your assessment of the game? It had nothing to do with Pittsburgh playing extremely well in the first half and executing better? If you are going to blame coaching for the first half of that game, then you have to credit coaching for the 2nd half because whatever adjustments they made at the half, clearly worked. That's how you can tell the difference between a good coach and a bad coach. Adjustments. But of course you ignore this like everything else that favors Rex and just blame it on preparation, which of course is another guess by you, and you rarely ever see flatness on the defensive side of the ball. Why are you so desperate to crap on Rex? It seems like you're just forcing this view with no justification. You are blaming Rex for the drafts for the last 11 years? Really? Didn't you read my response that clearly debunked you? Salary cap was extremely tight and we lost talent as a result. No, that's not Rex, that's Tanny's fault for overpaying the older linebackers and not being able to bring in young fresh ones for 4 years straight. Unless Rex is working the cap and writing people's contracts, he can't possibly be blamed for lack of talent. I mean the guy helped us draft Wilkerson, and he's one of the best DEs in the league. You are hilarious because you completely ignore everything good that Rex has done and only focus on the bad. It's simply an unfair way to justify firing a coach, and anybody that knows anything about football disagrees with you. Reality is what matters. The defense is ranked 8th in the league without Revis and with Pou'ha being banged up all year. That's GOOD and yes it IS what matters. Funny how you try to twist everything into your warped version of reality. The defense has been solid, but they can't do everything with the constant turnovers and poor play on offense / time of possession.
This is my last post on this subject with you. Your answer to everything I say is "that's just speculation, you are guessing, you can't prove it" - meanwhile, the same goes for everything you say. The difference is, I back it up with some examples of how I interpret the actions, you just blindly defend him. I've said over and over that I'm not going to get into the Xs and Os because I could live with those mistakes - everyone makes them. I based this entire back and forth on what I BELIEVE to be the case about why he's not doing a good job OFF THE FIELD, and why that translates into distractions that affect the team. But you insist on throwing accusations at me as if I'm avoiding answering you, and blindly defending him with lame excuses like "maybe Pittsburgh executed better". So everything the Jets do wrong is the other team outplaying them, and Rex does nothing wrong because it's everyone else's fault around him. Got it. Can't argue with that logic - you won't see it any other way. So I'm done.
this is where I throw in my obligatory mention of the fact that my flag went up on Rex Ryan from the moment the Ravens interviewed him for their HC opening when he was on their payroll for 9 yrs and their current assistant HC and chose to pass on him for the DB coach of only 1 year, formerly a special teams coach. They knew him quite well, and knew they didn't want him to represent their franchise. Smart move.
"Yes sir, I am rarin' to go, can't wait to get out there and tell the world how this great organization is going to win the Super Bowl next year. What's that? My wife? Does it really matter if several guys on the team have had relations with her? Sir, I assure you that it won't affect my coaching. Fracko has nothing to worry about. What's that? His name is Flacco? Ok, whatever, you knew I was talking about the QB. Hasn't the defense carried this team anyway? Yes sir, thank you sir, I appreciate the interview".
Ironically, Ryan defenders like to talk about the Jets failure to give a HC time, by firing them too quickly and we need to stay the course for continuity. How much continuity did Mangini get?
There are two things the Rex defenders say: we need the continuity, and it's everyone else's fault. Like Rex had nothing to do with anything. God forbid you blame anything on Rex. The continuity argument is silly. The jury is out on Rex, but when they point to the Jets history and say that the reason we're not successful is we pull the trigger too quickly, I laugh. Parcells left on his own, Groh left on his own, everyone else sucked and continued to suck after they left. To me, that's a history of bad choices in coaches, not impatience. The only exception was Carroll, and he was a victim of the stupidity of Leon Hess in wanting Kotite so badly.
Actually the main thing the Rex defenders say is that the defense is good right now and probably won't be after Rex is gone. Is that a good enough reason to keep him? I think for one season it probably is.
