They haven't drafted a single starting LB, which is the weak spot. Did you see what happened to the Ravens run D this season due to age and injuries? Calvin Pace, Bart Scott and Bryan Thomas. Those 3 guys are responsible for poor run D. It's a personnel issue, not a coaching one.
Ok so Rex gets credit for the pass defense which is simply because of pro-bowl caliber play by Cromartie and Landry, but he is not responsible for the 26th ranked run defense letting up over 2000 yards on the ground? The Pass D also gets a boost because the Jets were so easy to run on. I don't even know how to argue with you guys anymore, anything that goes right (back to back AFCCG's, solid pass defense) is attributed to Rex, anything that goes south is someone elses fault, I can see why he pisses tiffany cuff-links to you guys.
And so to you anything that goes right is due to the players but anything that goes wrong is due the Rex..... I could say the something. But please tell me, when has Cromartie had a season like this? Maybe the same scheme that helped Revis helped him, is that not reasonable? When you look a Calvin Pace's number and see replacement level stats you have to hold him responsible specially when he has declined with age. Is Rex responsible for the drop off in LB performance due to age? 3 of 4 LB's are old as fuck.
Or how about the Jets were almost never playing with a lead, making teams run against them much more than they normally would. You are essentially doing what you are accusing others of, by only focusing on one side of the argument. So the pass D is only good because teams didn't have to pass, yet the run D is weak because of slow linebackers, not just because the pass D was good and teams would rather NOT pass. Interesting.
the good thing is that, if they fire Ryan it will not be the end of the world or even the Jets. If they keep him, this time next year, we will most likely be having this same debate again, if the Jets don't make the playoffs. The great thing is, I am almost dead certain, that there are no longer any Sanchez sympathizers amongst us. We can all finally agree that Sanchez sucks, and hey, so what if it only took us 4 years to come together on that. Maybe Rex Ryan will amaze us all next season and the Jets will win the SB. I for one would love that, despite his mediocre, average HC skills.
Stop looking at pass D vs run D then, and look at total D yards. that is what matters. Jets and Texans virtually tied for 7th/8th in league. Above them, very good defenses including Pitt, Seattle, San Fran, Den, and Chi. The Giants, btw, were 31st, yet the Jets D get criticized and the Giants doesn't? The Jets were 8th in league, despite losing their best player, having no strong pass rush, LB's who are getting slow, and an offense who keeps the D on the field way too much. How can you possibly say Rex and Pettine didn't do a good job on D? That is coaching impact. Take them away next year, and we still have no QB, this team will go further down the toilet.
Sure let's follow the typical franchise pattern by getting another head coach. The Jets have been in existence since 1960. From that time they have had a total of 18 head coaches. For the first 30 years 9 head caches have taken the realm. Since 1990 the Jets have named 9 more: Bruce Coslet - 1990-93 Pete Carrol - 1994 Rich Kottite - 1996-96 Bill Parcells - 1997-1999 Bill Bellicheck 2000 Al Groh - 2000 Herman Edwards - 2001-2005 Eric Mangini - 2006 - 2008 Rex Ryan 2009 - present Lets continue the trend and not relinquish the title as the most likely team to fire a head coach before his tenure has been completed. The Jets make the term '5 year plan', used by all NFL teams when looking to gauge a period for rebuilding, the modern day phrase for smoke and mirrors. Lets continue to be the laughing stock of the NFL for a team with no constant leadership and on-going rudderless non-directional ship that seems to have no problem finding that giant white squall. As long as we can continue this trend , we can be rest assured of another 5 years of deep futile abyss and mediocrity. Those 'fans' that want/demand changes to key personnel, will only get the same as was repeated in the past - and doomed to repeat in the present. Let's make another coaching change and make sure that 3 years from now, we can create more arguments to make another change. What comes around goes around.
Needless to say I agree completely. I've been arguing with people who support Rex pretty constantly, and I said on this board last year after the Week 17 debacle when it came out that he admitted he lost the lockeroom that he needed to go then - though I knew last year wasn't realistic. Most of my problem with Rex is that he doesn't command any respect and that he's got a big mouth, but the in-game stuff if absolutely true as well. Do the Jets purposely seek out coaches who can't manage the clock?!?!
1. They made a bunch of bad personnel decisions the past few years which limited their ability to sign players and deteriorated their depth, so if you notice the record has been coming steadily down for a couple of years 2. Beating up on bad teams, and losing to the good ones. Now, can you figure out how many more games we would have won if the QB was even just bad instead of atrocious this season? Sanchez basically cost Tannenbaum his job- not only because of the extension but because he singlehandedly lost a few games this year which made the difference between being at least a .500 team and a 6-10 team. At .500, Tannenbaum probably keeps his job, at 6-10 he's gone.
If we cange nothing except for a few lower coaches this year, how can we expect to have a better record next year. Is Mark going to play better? Having a good defense, and a putrid offense that turns the ball over frequently is like a slow torture death. It sounds like thats what we are heading for. Maybe Woody is mailing in next season, and looking toward the furure when he can get from under Rex, and Tannenbaum's huge mistakes in contracts and invested talent that has not worked out. I hope he makes Rex live through this shit upcoming season that he helped build. We the fans can only wonder.
Abso-fucking-lutely!!!!!!!!!!!! Rex seemingly never has these guys ready for games, big or not big. The Jets come out flat almost every week, and don't get it together until the late 2nd quarter if at all. How they can come out flat and not ready for a AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME is beyond me.
Do any of the people who support Rex blame him for ANYTHING? This is getting ridiculous now. It's the OC's fault, it's the GM's fault, it's the mascot's fault - but it's never Rex's fault. He's a defensive guy. They've been drafting for primarily defense in the first two rounds for 11 years. Yet the linebackers are slow and the scheme is set for linebackers - and you don't consider this a fault? WTF!!!!!!!!!!! Am I in the twilight zone?!?!
So your MO seems to be seeing Rex gone. However your argument for the teams decline is Tanny and Sanchez, which i agree with. When it comes to making an argument against Rex, you got nothing but speculative bullshit like 'doesn't have respect'. wtf does that mean? he def has the respect of his players. 'clock mgmt' is that why we lost 10 games? The Rex detractors have no plan. just want change for sake of change, which gets us no where.
No, that's not what matters. Reality is what matters. If you watch the defense play ona regular basis, it isn't a big-time defense. It gives up big plays, it has trouble tackling, yo ucan almost bank on a 3rd down conversion if it's 3rd and 6 or longer - I don't care about the stats. They mean next to nothing. ANd total yards certainly isn't what matters most.
Oh boy, here we go again. I'm not bothering. The guy is not a good coach, period. I blame the entire organization, not just Tanny and Sanchez. In fact, I blame Sanchez the LEAST because they hung his ass out there to try and they were the ones stupid enough to bank their futures on it. Only Rex got a pass somehow.
For me there is a big missing piece in evaluating Ryan, and that is I don't know how much or little input he had on roster decisions. The posters above who defend him for doing what they think was they best he could with the existing roster are implicitly assuming or giving Ryan a pass that he had no role in those decisions. Schein is to the contrary saying Ryan has had a lot of imput on roster decisions. If I had to choose, I would guess Schein is right. But the truth is I don't really know. The relevance is that if Ryan has had a lot of input on roster decisions, it is an inadequate defense of him to say he did the best he could with a shitty roster.
