Rex staying on for now, the new GM will have a HUGE say in that. No GM worth his salt is going to come in and have Rex Ryan forced down his throat.

I think the plan is to hire someone who agrees to work with Rex

yeah, I sure hope they don't lose out on a good candidate by forcing REX on them....... and I like Rex, but he clearly has his flaws, and is replaceable (but it'll make the rebuild that much slower (both sides of the ball)

Before we rejoice too much, lets see who the Jets bring in. Tanny wasn't a top 10 GM, but he wasn't a bottom 10 either. Woody may bring in "his guy" who is little more than a yes man....or he may really make a bold move and get someone competent.

Well that would be a mistake, we need a bonified GM, a professional who has complete control of this team personnel wise, not a lemming being forced to listen to Rex and Woody, we already have that, his name is Mike Tannenbaum and he was just fired.

Who are these "good" canidates that you speak of? Who is out there that would be such an improvement over Rex?

No were not. Rex has got us to the big games in the past with mediocre talent, bring in some people that will establish some consistent talent on this roster (especially on the offensive side of the ball) and we will be fine.

    People are so forgetful.

Let me rephrase, What I meant is we're screwed if we pick a GM based on he has to stay Rex as part of the conditions under which he's hired. No competent GM is going to sign on with the condition that he HAS to keep the current HC.

I understood what you meant, in the post above yours IIMeanDeanII is talking about "good candidates" as in Head Coach, when the poster stinkyb was clearly talking about GM candidates. I think IIMeanDeanII needs to take a reading comprehension class.

My "good candidates" were in reference to the GM, not the head coach......

I give Tannenbaum a lot of credit. He took over as GM after the 2005 season when the team was pretty much horrible on both sides of the ball and Chad was coming off a second arm surgery. He and Mangini put together a playoff team with bottom 5 talent in 06. The 07 team fell off the cliff but he did assemble a team in 08 which after 11 games, before Favre got hurt was arguably as good as any team in the league with a legit shot at the SB. The 09 team with a rookie QB almost got there again. By 10 we were already in decline but the team made another solid run.

The team has deteriorated badly but Tanny in a very short time put the NY Jets in contention at the very moment the new stadium was ready. He did everything any NFL owner could ever ask for.

It's very difficult for any GM to rebuild twice particularly in a market like NY. The drafting of 2 failed franchize QB's the Tebow move and the overall deterioration of the O leaves the team in need of a serious rebuild. I simply can't see how Tanny and Rex can do it again. We simply have to many contracts to eat and we need to hit a few home runs in the draft along with starting all over looking for a franchise QB. Ultimately Tannenbaums major failure was his inability to replace Pennington between 06 and 12 that's a long run without a decent QB option.

if Rex was going to be fired, the headlines would have said Ryan and Tannenbaum to be fired. there was never any reason to believe firing Tanny equated to firing Rex.
