Looks like Shamu's blind little bastard. Fortunately the Dophins salvaged some of their cred being associated with the 'terminally hip' Jimmy Buffet and Darius Rucker.
They should go with this: I always thought "Dolphins" was a really non-intimidating nickname for a team. They're friendly little playful animals... not exactly menacing.
It made it even worse in the 80s when I watched the Patriots lose to them over and over again, lol... Initially, all NFL teams were given names that had some kind of "regional" element to them (apologies if that's common knowledge), but then teams moved, expansion happened, etc. A lot of the names don't make sense now. Did the "U" Hurricanes already have their nickname when the Dolphins first formed? That would have been a little more badass I guess.
I don't really know about the Canes. I'm not from Florida myself. I've lived in VA my whole life haha. I follow the Phins cuz my dad is from Florida and raised me rooting for them. Unfortunately... lol
Yes GP.. UM adopted the 'hurricane' nickname back in the 20's after the great hurricane of 1926. A lesser known version has the nickname 'hurricane' coming about as a player's protest in response to a rumored nickname being chosen after some local flora or fauna. Cane trivia: the mascot (the Ibis) was chosen back in the 1920's as was the name of the yearbook. Originally they dressed a bulldog named 'Hurricane' in green & orange. The ibis mascot makes sense because ibises are the last to take shelter from a hurricane, so when they do, all other animals know it's about to 'go down' and to take shelter and ibises are the first to emerge after the storm. Sebastian the Ibis ('Sebastian' named after a dorm) came about in the 1950's. Bottom line: you know your mascot is badass when the keystone cop sherrif's at Doak Cambell Stadium (FSU) look to arrest you: Brave and fearless: Sebastian the Ibis. Gay and loving it: the Miami Dolphins.
The U is actually 40 years older then the Phins... I always liked the nickname based on the city... like in the case of the Milwaukee Brewers or Texas Rangers... Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens
Hard to escape that paternal influence! A good family friend of ours decided to be a 'Phins fan back in the 80s. At one point I had a collection of hats/tees/etc because he'd buy me Miami gear for birthdays and Christmases. That's pretty funny, thanks for posting man! Agreed. Took me forever to figure out what "Browns" are though.
+1 love it It could be worse......Im pretty sure I just can't think of any examples at the moment Sent from my LG-P999
Slight improvement IMO but just not enough. They really gotta change their color scheme and uniforms, most of the college teams in FL have much better uniforms than the Dolphins. Happy that the Bills improved theirs, but the Dolphins have been due a makeover for awhile man.
I think this was tweeted by the Faux John Madden account and those accounts have been making fake team logos all year. I don't think it's real.
