I think Rex feels having DL who can get after the QB makes the whole defense easier. Give him a defensive line that can create pressure on its own, and a top set of cover guys gives him the freedom to do a lot of different things on defense. Praying for Jarvis Jones. Te'o is very good, too, but I think someone like Jones does more for this team. Wouldn't trade up though.
Easy to do that now but i ain't gonna play that stupid shit. I liked the Coples pick then and its looking pretty good right now, guy is a natural pass rusher who as time goes on will only get better.
Coples was a good pick. Jones lones like the winner but its cause he's on a team that plays with a lead as others have said. I'm more concerned the Defensive coaching staff is going to blow up - Pettine & Dunbar need to be back. Not to derail this thread but I have to agree. We should be using a majority of the picks on Offense pending the spot the players land in. I think a 3rd round LB and bringing back either Scott or Pace and letting Devis get more reps is the smart thing to do. While ignoring the D during the draft isn't a good move, I think our defense is pretty good even as currently constituted. We need offensive help bacd and that's where the focus should be. Lets see what happens on Black Monday before the wheels on the speculation bus go round and round.
Let's see what happens in year two. Q had much more on his plate from a mental standpoint in year one and will hopefully get a lot more snaps next year. He really started to come on in the last month.
I'm fine with Pettine leaving, because we already have a DC in waiting in Dennis Thurman. Dunbar is an absolute keeper - he cannot be let go.
When the Jets were OTC, I was screaming for DeCastro or Reiff. Based on the performance of the offensive line this year alone (and without consideration to Coples at all), I'm sticking to my initial preferences.
Wasn't there something going around saying that Jarvis Jones would be having a short career because of a back issue or something? If so, then we really shouldn't take that risk, he's a really good player but you shouldn't take him that early if its a sure thing that he will have a short career.
No such thing as a sure thing in Football, or sports in general, hell even in life the only sure thing is death.
No, I wouldn't take Coples. I like Coples, he's played well and above my expectations, but he's another 34E or 43 DT. We need(ed) an 34OLB/43DE and my pick would have been to go with Chandler Jones, Shea McClellin or Whitney Mercilus. Would have been better off going with Riley Reiff, David DeCasto or Kevin Zeitler, too. Quention's a nice player, but we now have two solid 34E/43T's instead of one 34E/43T and a solid RT or 34OLB/43DE.
If I'm basing this on hindsight, Zeitler might actually be the best pick. Best combination of outstanding rookie play and filling a need. Right up there with Martin, anyway.
This is where I was and how I feel, but luckily Coples has also been a good pick. I hope there's some strong OL prospects available for the JETS this upcoming draft
