Giants missed the playoffs two years in a row went on to win the Superbowl and they look like there gonna miss the playoffs again this year. Its not easy to win consistently in this league and harder with Sanchez and the offense making it unbearable
You "fire" people should go become Raiders fans. New headcoach every year, no winning seasons in a decade.
Bill Cowher took 13 years to win a Superbowl and missed the playoffs a few times during his tenure until that SB year. Are you willing to give Cowher that much time to win a SB here? If so, then why not let Rex keep his job for another 9 years? Cowher and Gruden were unproven until they won and "became" legitimate. How legitimate of a winning HC did Beli look like in Cleveland? And now Belicheat is one of the greatest coaches of all time after a miserable campaign with the Browns, a DC stint with the Jets and then HC again in NE - not to mention a very lucky 6th round pick. Rex is a better HC than Edwards and Mangini by the sheer fact that he is a better teacher of X&O's. He has a sub par team playing above their level. We would be 2-14 if we had 90% of the coaches in this league. Rex is a the best option for the Jets as HC because he is a legitimate mentor and teacher to players, has great recruiting abilities as a "players coach", and know how to take a bullet for the team when the heat is on. When things are going well he knows how to pump up the fan base, and when things are poor, like they are now, he can take the bullet and still get his players up for a game. Rex should remain as HC for the Jets for a log time. He is going to be a great HC in this league and I want MY TEAM to reap those rewards, no someone else.
Yup. Can also throw a handful of other teams up there like the Chiefs, Bills, and Browns. Rotating coordinators and coaches all the time, and haven't had the least bit of success recently.
And you guys act like making changes means instant success, It doesnt work like that. It took Shanahan 2 losing seasons to fix the redskins. So if we brought in Gruden, we are looking at the 2015 season as the next playoff season. 2013 would be about gutting the team. 2014 would be about rebuilding. 2015 would then be playoffs. Im sure thats what you all want right? you guys can barely handle 2 non-win seasons, yet your all prepared for 2 more with your proven coach that you want to bring in?
It isn't exactly a secret why the Jets has gotten worse two years in a row. Cap space and draft picks were spent to sell out the new arena and it got the team to two straight AFCC games. Who knows how Rex's second year would have ended if Kris Jenkins could have stayed healthy? The party is over now and the bills have to be paid, yet some of you wants to fire the Chef since he can't cook haute cuisine with leftovers.
Rex can no longer have any input on draft picks. Thats the only change I want to see. He doesnt know how to build a team, but he has proven if he is given the correct players he can do a great job coaching them.
Personally, I don't care about losing seasons, if I feel there is a long term goal, a plan towards said goal and a sense that we are making strides. I love Rex but I get the feeling that with he and Tanny everything is for the short-term. Whereas you have the sense that the Patriots have mapped out what what their plans are 5 years into the future with various contingencies. I think if Rex stays we need a GM with a strong enough personality to make his own personnel choices independent of what Rex wants. I think one of Tanny's biggest problems of late is letting Rex have too much of an influence on the personnel. This is why talent is so heavily one-sided towards the defensive side of the ball.
I would only fire Rex if we could get Sean Payton or one of the retired coaches in TV. But neither is happened, so keep Rex.
Is Rex a 'good' coach? No, there are very few good coaches that have only coached four years and never gotten to a SB. Does Rex deserve to lose his job? Absolutely not. Does he have deficiencies, sure...everyone knows what they are (too loyal, not enough attention paid to offense), and if he still doesn't rectify them after this year he will pay with his job by next offseason. I think Rex has done an above average job his four years. Not good, not fireable. He got the most out of the Jets his first two years, it could be argued he got the most out of the Jets THIS year (until today, their first truly meaningless game in the Rex era), all things considered. Last year was the only year I thought we underachieved per se.
Unless you think Rex made 'all' the draft picks the last four years (which I doubt) there's no real evidence to suggest that Rex has been putrid in the draft other than the John Connor fiasco. Supposedly Rex gets one second/third day pick and that's it. Tanny's been bad enough in the draft all on his own...there need to be changes in the draft/scouting department for sure. I'm not sure they should include Rex, either way.
While I'm not necessarily calling for his head, I also don't think dismissing Ryan is an outlandish or unreasonable idea. He completely lost control of the team last year and was so ignorant of his own team's offense that he didn't even realize Holmes had been benched. His handling of the QB position- stubbornly refusing to bench an abysmal, rancid, mentally checked-out QB in Sanchez when even completely average QB play could have gotten even this team into the playoffs; his ridiculous and mystifying decisions about which of the backup QBs were active- has been atrocious. His insistence on hiring Sparano without even apparently an interview or consideration of other options clearly harmed this team. I can live with Rex staying on provided the team hires a REAL GM- eg Polian- who has expertise in talent evaluation and team building (and is willing to work with Rex and not insisting on hiring their own coach)- and that Rex has no say in this. This would include the hiring of a real OC who essentially would act as the offensive HC, since Rex clearly is incompetent in this area.
He was asked 5 times in press conference today "Why was Tebow dressed"? Rex couldn't answer the question. He kept bringing up Kerley. What does Tebow have to do with Kerley? Rex dressed 6 WRs last week. He doesn't know how to run a team. He hired Sporano who has zero feel for the flow of the game. Rex will need to hire a replacement for Sporano who is also responsible for the offensive line with that loudmouth offensive line coach. Who hired him? Sporano. Another new offensive system. They need to replace Cavanaugh who they tried to replace but couldn't. So far its a new offensive coordinator. New offensive line coach. New QB coach. Gary Myers wrote today 2013 is the make or break year for Rex. So they are going to hire basically an entire new staff and then fire Rex if they have a 3rd straight non-playoff year? Pettine is going to leave so they need a new defensive coordinator. A new special teams coach. Continuity? What type of candidates are they going to attract with Rex coming off 2 non-playoff years and 2 years left on his contract? Continuity?
"Rex is a better teacher of x's and o's". Where? What is your proof of this claim? I see a team that has declined in all facets the last two plus years. You Rex lovers make claims like this constantly but offer no examples. Here's the fact - the team has gotten steadily worse with Ryan as head coach. Refute that.
Well Rex did better with Mangini's talent and rookie QB than Mangini did with a HOF QB but what does that means  The Pats, Giants, Steelers, Ravens have all gotten progressively worse at some point under Bill, Tom, Bill/Mike, and Harbaugh. That's all within the last 5 years, none of those coaches were fired. I could say the same for Norv Turner, Andy Reid who both were given many years that people considered "extra". We can look at Shannahan also, we could look at Chiefs if you want, or the Rams even. The Bears too. Can you refute that? Nope. The fact of the matter is, there aren't very good coaches out there like there aren't good QBs. Any coach we would get leads to a complete rebuild and 3-5 years of sucking badly because the defense is dropping big time. Yes Rex hasn't done great, but he hasn't done fireable job either. The GM seems to be more to blame for most of our problems than Rex. We aren't underperforming to our talent like SD did under Norv Turner in past seasons. So that usually means it isn't the coach at blame.
This is a good point too, Rex has a vision for this, a vision most coaches out there except maybe Cowher wouldn't have. Many coaches won't run or know the 46 as well as Rex either, a defense that has hidden some big weaknesses we have on defense. Rex has a plan, the talent around him hasn't filled out the team well. If Rex has full control of personnel and the final say as people are suggesting, we aren't going to win letting a coach play GM and coach. That's why they are separate jobs, not one job for the coach to do.
