You're being too kind. I'm not really seeing greatness from him on defense. His dad showed greatness, not Rex. I doubt he's retained if a new GM comes aboard. This franchise needs a swift kick in the ass after having a players coach. I think you agree.
This team has beaten 1 team with a winning record the past two seasons (the Colts this year). They have a considerable ways to go. Playing competitive games against good teams doesn't do it. They are a bad/mediocre team because they can't beat good teams. No QB, tons of cuts next year and cap restrictions says they are at least a few years away. They can always plug some holes and contend for a wildcard, but that shouldn't be enough to satisfy fans anymore.
It seems like we have a generation of fans who are satisfied with this. Shooting for the wildcard is the "new normal" in Jets land. If we disagree then we're not true fans.
Winning a division title is hard no matter who the QB of New England is. It's hard for the Patriots, too. Even with their inconsistent defense they somehow find a way to overcome it. We need to play better and we need people making much better personnel decisions. If your bar is set at the wild card, then why should we try to be better? Embarrassing really. Much in the same way Rex coached this season.
The Patriots are the benchmark for us. We want to be where they are. Contenders, not pretenders. That being said, we've got a lot of work to do and it starts in the front office. Tannenbaum is not doing a good enough job with his drafts and free agency pickups. Rex Ryan, good job on the defensive side, piss poor on the offensive side. You're a head coach now which means you oversee the entire team, not just one side of the ball. That leads me to our biggest problem, Sparano. Never liked him, even when he was in Dallas. Then I saw him up close in Miami. The day the Jets hired him was a dark day. Somebody needs to boot this fucking clown right out of the building. This guy couldn't manage his own sock drawer without fucking it all up. Get him out of here! I'll never know why this guy was hired. You could literally have someone on the sidelines picking plays out of Madden and still manage a better offense than this idiot. Other than that, the Oline needs work, receiving corps needs work, and eventually we're going to need a QB.
Just looking at the finishing position, we could end up with a tough deal next year if we win out. If we come second in the East we get San Diego and Indianapolis in 2013, as opposed to Oakland and Tennessee if we're third or Kansas City and Jacksonville if we're fourth. Quite a significant difference for the 2nd placed team, it feels.
1 decent QB and we are in contention. Look at the Colts with Manning, then with no-one, and now with Luck. The QB position >>>>>>>>> everything else.
It's a question that really can't be answered until we know what's going with the management / coaching staff situation...... A big change could bring a new philosophy making alot of players become square pegs for round holes. :shit:
As long as Ryan stays in place I do not think the Jets are far off. The defense will need a better pass rusher or two on the outside, but other than that if you keep that defense and Ryan in tact, there is no reason to think there might be a drop off on that side of the ball next year. I do not think your QB issues are as grave as most Jets fans. It is true that the QB is the most important on the team, but I think what really made the Jets offense unsuccessful was not having a capable starting RB, WR and some holes on the o-line. Rex Ryan has proved that when he has a good running game to lean on, with some good receivers and that defense, the QB does not need to be Peyton Manning. I think if the Jets got a big-time RB, added a receiver or two, and made some changes to the offensive line, you can roll on with McElroy and be pretty good.
Contention for what? The playoffs? We could field the same team next year and contend for that. The SB-very far off.
I have most all of them. He played as a starter for one year in a team that would have won most games without throwing a single pass. His own coach told him he was not ready for the NFL and guess what? He might never be
3 years If we bring in a new GM and coach, draft Geno Smith or Barcley (unlikely with the cap hit we will take from Sanchez) and then start selling away whatever assets we have such as Revis for draft picks, we can be competitive in 2 to 3 years.
That's fools gold. The jets don't have a number one WR, barely a number 2, no TE, terrible guards, questionable RT, no real threat at RB, and no QB. On defense, no LBs and no safeties are signed for next year. Landry is don, Bell is old. I think you are going to see exactly how bad the Jets offense is tomorrow. Jets need to draft every round except the 3rd pick for the next two years just to fix the damage done over the last four.
Shooting for the wildcard is nothing wrong. Yeah you shoot for the #1 seed in the AFC or the AFC East first, but realistically the wildcard is our best bet in the playoffs, so of course you shoot for it. Easy answer, Jets are 1 elite QB from contending. Most likely answer, 2-4 years away from contending as a SF/HOU/BAL type team that doesn't rely on their QB for the majority of their success
