So essentially its going to be a new staff. New DC if Pettine's contract ends after this season. Another new OC. New QB coach. Another new OL coach. New special teams coach. Rex has two more years on his contract. He is signed through 2014. Another new system on offense. New coaches all over the place. The possible candidates will see Rex is coming off two non-playoff years and has two years remaining on his contract. Those guys will have other options. Will Woody allow Rex to enter 2014 as a lame duck? So if the Jets have another tough season,Rex is gone. Look at the Jets roster and it will be essentially be the same roster. Its time to find a GM who will pick his own coach.
He probably wants to be a head coach. Im pretty sure he tried to become a HC after 2010 but no one wanted him. Doesn't want to tie himself down. IF he can find a job as a head coach good for him. Id be sorry to see him go but if Rex is still HC I dont really see it having much of an effect. If Rex starts play calling again it could be a good thing.
signing a contract as a defensive coordinator would not interfere with his getting a head coaching job at all, it only prevents him from becoming a defensive coordinator for another team. so the only relevance of becoming a head coach to his turning down the extension would be what others have stated -- that he thinks he isn't getting enough applaud himself for the Jets defense and wants to become a D coordinator elsewhere so he can finally increase his visibility as a coordinator and improve his chances to become a head coach, because right now Rex gets all the celebration for the Jets D.
I think that maybe Pettine wants to go somewhere he can have more control over the defense. Lets be real here, we all know Rex calls the shots on D and is involved in the playcalling as well. Rex will stay. I wouldn't mind seeing him at DC in need be, but I think he's a good coach.
Tom Gamble-Jets GM/President of Football Ops Greg Roman-Jets HC. Current 49er OC. John Morton-Jets OC. Morton has an impressive resume. He designs the 49ers passing game. Current 49ers WR coach. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Morton_(American_football) Eric DeCosta-Jets GM/President of Football Ops David Shaw-Jets HC. Current Stanford coach. Shaw worked at Stanford with Jim Harbaugh and Roman. He was also a member of the Ravens staff under Brian Billick. QB/WR coach from 02-04. There is a DeCosta connection there. Shaw signed an extension with Stanford yesterday. Baltimore and Frisco are two of the better run teams in the NFL. Roman,Morton and Shaw have Harbaugh connections.
They'd be playing light out if they didn't give up a 96 yard run to Chris Johnson and practically let Jake fucking Locker walk down the field.
Letting up only 14 points in a -5 turnover game is about as good as it gets in today's NFL. Jets D is among the current best. But for you, i guess its a shutout or bust?
Doesn't seem odd to me at all...Put yourself in Pettine's shoes....He is a Rex guy. He has no idea how the hammer is going to drop this offseason, and he is the DC of the circus headline Jets. I think he wants to leave his options open at this point to see if he can find a less volatile position with a HC who's job is secure. I think from Pettine's perspective this is smart, and if I were him I'd do the same thing. I would absolutely not sign an extension with a team who's FO and coaching staff could be in a serious transition.
If the offense was even remotely capable, the Jets would have won that game. The defense gave up 14 points...14...
my question is when was this extension offered to him? it didnt sound like they just did it recently. especially since if they just recently offered him an extension then that would mean that the front office does not have plans to move away from rex. now if they offered it to him 2 months ago and he declined thats a completely different ball game.
This is interesting. It's not because he is looking for a HC job. If a team offers him a HC position he can leave the Jets regardless of whether or not he signed an extension because it's a higher position.
Nonsense..if Ryan gets fired they all get fired anyway. All this does is insure he won't make any money on it.
Smart man - who in their right mind would want to sign on and be part of the shit show that is New York Jets, when you could walk away free and clear with a decent resume of how your Defense performed. We are the laughing stock of the NFL. We are completely dysfunctional organization and a fucking three ring circus.
