There is almost 0 reason for mark to do this at this point. He lowered his cap number last year for more guaranteed money. I don't see us giving him a better guarantee, he has been benched, and right now it will cost us more to cut or trade him than to keep him next year.

Cut him now. Take the hit, move on. I don't understand why people want to throw good money after bad.

Close. 12.35M in 2013 and $4.8M in 2014. Still too high to justify a cut. Not going to guarantee him almost $5M in 2014 to save just a few hundred thousand in cap for 2013 (Sanchez's 2013 cap value is about $12.8M).

This is what I'm hoping for. Cut Tebow, demote Sanchez to backup, let him be the pencil pusher for a bit. Give him a couple years to get his bearings. If Sanchez agrees (what leverage would he even have?) we have money to sign a QB.... OR keep McElroy and use the money to tool up the offense big time. For some odd reason I lean to the second option, but McElroy is still unproven. We'll see. We'll probably draft a 2nd or 3rd round QB this year as well. This is a contract year for Tanny. Possibly Rex too.

I think the best scenario for the team is probably to put him in an open competition for the starting spot in training camp then cut him anywhere after June 1 if he is playing poorly. 2013 is a bad cap year for us, but 2014 is actually not bad, with Sanchez cut either after June 1, during the season or after 2013.... we would have about 87M in salary committed for 2014. That is even before making decisions on Cromartie and Holmes. If Scott is cut this year that drops the 2014 number another 8 million.

It's only a savings of a few hundred thousand toward the 2013 cap if they cut him after June 1st. Sanchez's cap number is $12.8M and the hit would be $12.35M if cut after june 1. Just isn't worth carrying over the $4.8M into the next year for such a meager savings.

If the hit is only 8.3 million, they should cut him the moment the season is over. Then he and Gholston can open a chain of movie theaters together.

Sanchez's cap number if cut before June 1 is $17.15M. All cutting after June 1 really does is spread that 17M over 2 years at 12.35 and 4.8 respectively. There is no way to cut Sanchez without paying him 17.15M it is guaranteed, the only question is how you spread it against 2013 and 2014

Edit- here is a Peter King article which explains it: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/nfl/news/20121218/mark-sanchez-jets/?sct=hp_wr_a1&eref=sihp
Jetscap also has the same numbers.

I'm aware of that...which is why cutting Sanchez doesn't make sense whether it is before June 1st or after. The Jets would be better off keeping him on the roster and cutting him at a cap saving in 2014 than pushing $4.8 into 2014 for just a few hundred thousand dollar savings in 2013.

Huh? they would still pay him 4.8M in 2014 if he stays on the team for 2013.
There are 2 possible ways to cut Sanchez, before June 1 is 17M in 2013
After June 1 whether that is before, during or after the 2013 season they have to pay him 12.4 in 2013 and 4.8 in 2014.
There is no scenario under which they don't pay those (well except if they don't cut him at all and pay him the full 13 M in 2014 as well but that seems unlikely)

edit- to clarify the "cap saving" in 2014 is savings against his 13M salary in 2014, it saves 8.3 M by ONLY paying him the 4.8 guaranteed bonus.

2013 is when we need to pay the piper on all our crappy contracts, then start fresh in 2014. Sanchez has to go ASAP. The new GM should be focused 100% on the draft, that's it. No free agents for the next two seasons. Make trades to get extra picks.

    Use your own source. http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary13.html

Sanchez's cap value is 12.8. The hit is $12.35M after June 1. Why would you push $4.8M to next year for a cap savings of a few hundred thousand dollars? It's better to keep him on the roster.

http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary13.html In 2014 the Jets can cut him at a savings.

it is the same amount of money.
You pay him 4.8m no matter when he is cut, there is no savings. YOU AREN"T PUSHING 4.8M INTO THE NEXT YEAR, IT IS ALREADY THERE YOU JUST DON"T ACCELERATE IT TO 2013.
Look at the dead money in the 2014 page. That is what you pay him if you cut him after the season. It is the same as what you pay if you cut him in season after June 1 2013.
The only way to not have the 4.8M in 2014 is to cut him before June 2013 and pay him 17M in 2013.
