Maybe it's just me; but I felt oddly better that this team did not make the playoffs this year. If they did, there would have been a false sense of entitlement and our organization would have been set back 4 years. What do you think?

No - Still pissed. Pissed that it will be at least this time next year before we have a playoff hopes. Pissed that the franchise QB has defecated into an absolutely horrible QB - where there is little hope for him to become this team's QB of the future. Pissed that the Jets have zero talent beyond a few players. Pissed that the Jets chose to bring in Tebow and compound this team's absurdity. Pissed about the whole damn situation.

I'm disappointed about the season obviously, but I think there are definitely some positives we can take away from this year.

For one, Wilkerson has really blossomed. If you read posts from the off season, there are people who were calling him a bust. I think everyone can agree that barring injury Wilkerson will be a solid part of the DL for years to come.

Another bright spot is Kerley. He showed some flashes of being able to play last year, but this year he proved he has what it takes to play slot effectively. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Kerley is able to do with a QB who can hit him in stride and throw with at least average NFL accuracy.

Bilal Powell has also been a bright spot. Though he has played second fiddle to green he has run hard and shows potential going forward (if not as the #1 back, definitely as someone solid that the Jets can rotate in).

Then you have the improved play of cromartie, the great play of Landry (who I hope we keep), the recent signing of Edwards (who looked like he still had something left last night), and even flashes of being decent from Ellis (when he wasn't hurt).

I'm feeling better about one thing.

    The Sanchez discussion is over.

We can at least move on from there. I'll always remember the AFC championship games and clutch moments in his second year but its time to move on obviously.

Other positives from this year include

Coples - you definitely see the ability, he just needs more consistency, but he and Mo inside area can be a big time tandem

Howard - Still a work in progress from a pass blocking standpoint but according to pro football focus he is in top 5 in run blocking.

I personally don't think this team is that far off, but at the end of the day you need decent QB play at the very least to get to the playoffs.

If Matt Hassleback were to come available I think the Jets should consider him. He played well for the Titans last year and I think could be a decent stop gap.

I agree with this as well, the jets aren't as far off as people think. The jets just need to add depth to the o line, bring back Braylon next season. The receiving corp would be pretty solid, even bring back Gates and Schillens as 5th and 6th receivers. add some olb and another LB.

The jets have young guys that could emerge next season like Ellis, Davis, Allen, Bush and dare i say it McElroy.

What I'm happy about is that another (undeserved) playoff appearance wont give this organization false self of entitlement (something that rubbed me the wrong way about tanny on hard knocks) that after years of failing to address the issues (o line, olb) that his time as a gm may be coming to an end and good riddence.

No -- they could have made a quarterback change at midseason, and got a nice surge going in the right direction, and made the playoffs. Sanchez problem solved, plus a nice half season to enjoy.

    1. Do not let the performance of Landry fool you into thinking "OMG WE MUST SIGN HIM!" Recall what everybody said when Revis went down - the defense is going down the drain, everybody said. Did it happen? No. What Landry showed is that, if Ryan gets a competent safety, he will make it work. (Shows you how bad Jets safeties were last year.) He is still young, but if he looks for too much, he should walk. (No more than 5M.)

    2. The ineptitude of the offensive coaching staff was on the show all year long. I still can't figure out, for the life of me, why that sack of shit Cav wasn't canned last year. Looks like this guy Sanjay Lal sucks horrendously bad - Jets need Henry Ellard back. Receivers shouldn't be dropping the ball like they have this season. As for the RB Coach - Anthony Lynn - I don't know if the sucktitude of Greene makes him look bad, or it's the other way. OL coach seems to be decent at least.

    3. First step in solving a problem is acknowledging there is one - and the last game all but confirmed, without a shred of doubt, that there is a huge problem all over the board on offense. That alone is a progress.

    This where I am.......

sort of like the ending of a sexy yet volatile relationship. Yeah she was fun, and had potential but deep inside you really knew it wasn't going to work from the beginning.....

besides, it could've been much worse..... true JETS collapse fashion would've been losing to Buffalo week 17 with a post season berth there for the taking.

worst part about the whole thing is seeing ANOTHER potential franchise QB for the JETS go down the shitter

Offensively this team needs years to recover from this hangover... Nothing to celebrate and nothing that makes me feel good.

I tend to agree with the OP. Some things in life, some times in life, things have to get bad to a certain point before they get better. I had a bad feeling about this season going all the way back to the loss to NE in November last year, which concern was heightened by the collapse in the last three games. And while the Sanchez contract extension and Tebow trades were just two of the horrible moves made by the FO in an off season I hope we never see anything similar again, I also felt the main objective for the 2012 season was to figure out whether Sanchez should stick or be shitcanned.

Obviously the main concern about this season was if the results were too ambiguous to answer that question and achieve that objective. But we know now that the answer is reasonably clear (other than the cloud provided by Sanchez's contract, of course). Muck's gotta go, and so at least in that sense the season's main objective has been achieved.

Now the Jets can start moving forward into the post Muck era. Since we all know he should leave and not stay, that's a step in the right direction, and we should feel good about that.

Add in that the Tebots will soon be departing, and that we at least will see, pro or con, what McElroy can do after a week's full practice with the starters, and I feel pretty good right now.
