MUST GO Mike Tannenbaum Terry Bradway Tony Sparano Matt Cavanaugh LET WALK Shonn Greene Dustin Keller Calvin Pace Bryan Thomas Bart Scott Jason Smith CUT YOUR LOSSES Mark Sanchez Sione Pouha Eric Smith Tim Tebow UP IN THE AIR Rex Ryan (Needs to be new GM’s call) Mike Pettine Matt Slauson/Austin Howard (Need to find suitable replacements if letting them walk. Ideally replace at least 1 of 2) QUIETLY FLOAT ON TRADING BLOCK Darrelle Revis (More hope to sign him long term if Tannenbaum is gone) Antonio Cromartie (Value will never be higher) David Harris (Good luck with that contract) Santonio Holmes (Good luck with that contract) BUILDING BLOCKS Muhammad Wilkerson Nick Mangold Quinton Coples D’Brickashaw Ferguson Kenrick Ellis Demario Davis Jeremy Kerley Stephen Hill (Because you can’t cut ties with a 2nd round pick this early…not with his size and speed) Bilal Powell (Your hopeful 1B Back) Greg McElroy (Your hopeful backup QB) Joe McKnight (Kick returner/Hopeful can contribute on offense if properly used) TRY TO BRING BACK, MAY NOT BE ABLE TO LaRon Landry Yeremiah Bell Mike DeVito
This is a little reactionary. Letting Shonn Green and Dustin Keller go would completely destroy our offense, not that we have much offense to begin with. I also really like Harris. I'm not sure if we need Mike DeVito given that Coples is the same position (albiet different skill set). Landry, IMO, is a must have and if we don't keep Yeremiah Bell than Eric Smith will most likely remain (unfortunately).
I agree with ALL (really nice list!!) except bringing back Bell and DeVito...Both are good, but both are old. Time to get younger.
A new GM will want his Head Coach, unless the new GM is Woody's puppet. Anyone who thinks if Tanny leaves and Rex stays is kidding themselves.
Greene should be resigned for cheap. He's a dependable, work horse back at a solid 4.0 avg. The problem is people want him to be a top elite back which he is not. He is, however, a perfect complimentary back. Could make the argument for Keller. Neither are premium players, but they are dependable producers (when healthy). Not everyone on a roster can be a Pro Bowler.
Dude you can't just get rid of everyone on the team in one season this isn't madden,You wanna cut this person and that person most of whom are starters, WHO THE FUCK IS replacing all these guys????that you wanna let walk and cut we would be worse with shitty undrafted rookie players. And Calvin Pace and Bart Scott are signed threw next season so they would need to be cut or traded and Sione Pouha is a great DT the fact that you wanna cut him shows how little you know about football,Good DT's don't grow on trees he does a good job stopping the run up the middle and Calvin Pace has also been playing pretty well latley. Defense needs little changes if any at all when you compare it to our problems on offense, the defense kept us in alot of games almost all of them they get no rest there always on the field. In my opionion if your gonna make wholesale changes keep it on the offensive side of the ball and on defense Replace Bryan Thomas and Bart Scott thats it
Not a bad list. Absolutely have to cut losses with Sanchez and Tebow. trade and agree to aborb some of the cap, or flat cut. A new OC and new QB have to be first priority. Agree about Tanny. We need someone in here to make strategic team decisions now more than ever. Someone who can keep a meddling Woody at bay.. that's not Tanny. I would keep Rex and Pettine. Wouldn't be too quick to gut the defense either, as a lot of draft picks and whatever available cap needs to be applied to offense. Pouha is not an issue. I'd do my best to re-sign both Landry and Devito. Wouldn't doubt one of the CB's gets floated in a trade under the radar to see if there is a good market. On offense, letting Keller walk is fine by me. We need to clean house on these non-blocking, penalty taking, pass dropping TE's. That includes Reuland and Cumberland too. i would actually re-sign Greene if the price was right for a more complimentary role. Same with Jason Smith at a min salary. Would look to bring back Braylon if he plays well over next 2 games. need to upgrade at least 1 Oline position, so i'd be fine letting either Slauson or Moore go. It's a rebuild on offense no doubt.
Obviously you can't turnover the entire team but pretty much nobody aside from a handful of guys are must stays. (Mo Wilk and Coples are about the only 2 guys on this entire team that I am excited about having 2-3 years from now.)
I don't buy into this "no tlaent on the roster" bullshit. The QB is 90% of the problem on this team. We'd be an 8-6 team right now if we simply had reasonable play at the QB position ... and probably on our way to 10-6. The defense is a quality NFL defense. It's not dominant, but it's a very good unit. Maybe you guys don't watch much of the other teams, but if you do, you start to appreciate just how good this defense is. Definitely Top 6 or 7, with a healthy Revis. Suggesting we should get rid of him or Cromartie is completely ridiculous. This is a playoff defense that only needs a little more speed at LB. Get rid of Scott and Thomas and replace them with some youth, and as long as Wilkerson and Coples continue to develop we'll be fine for the near future. I'd definitely keep Devito and Ellis. Pouha is expendable. On offense, I have no problem going forward with Holmes, Kerley, Hill and Edwards as our WR core in 2013. Alot depends on Hill developing into a solid WR and I'm still confident he can do that. If we let Keller go, I wouldn't shed a tear. He can play, but he's always hurt. I think powell can be an every down RB. I'd like to give him a shot next year. He has good quickness and makes people miss, and he finishes his runs. McKnight is definitely a keeper, and needs a bigger role. If we let Greene go, so be it. Not too hard to replace what he gives us. The OL actually played better this year, but we can probably do better than Howard at RT. I'm very iffy on Slauson and Moore ... but you can't just gut an entire OL all at once. If defenses had to spend even a minute of concern that our QB might actually be able to make a play, I guarantee some running lanes would suddenly open up. This offense isn't nearly as bad as the numbers show. Our QB can't even play a little, so we leave points all over the field every game. He's easily the worst QB in the league and our OC is completely inept. Change those two guys, and suddenly we'd be scoring more than enough points to win with our defense. Do we need upgrades ... certainly. But there's no need to blow the whole thing up. This isn't a 3-13 roster. We just have a 3-13 QB.
So did you copy and paste that from here: http://turnonthejets.com/2012/12/new-york-jets-off-season-advice-for-woody-johnson/ or are you the author of that article? 'Cause plagiarism ain't cool. For real.
Agree completely. This OP's list looks like the childish rantings rather than someone thinking about the future of our team. The Defense is not lights out, but it is good. There are many key peices to build around and scraping the best secodary in football is not going to happen. The list of realistic Cuts at this point looks like : Jason Smith - 12 mill cap savings Calvin Pace - 8.5 mill Bart Scott - 7.1 mill Sione Pouha - 3.8 mill Eric Smith - 3 mill Thats 34.4 million in Cap savgins leaving us at 107 Mill with approx. 15 mill in cap space, not counting any rollover. It also gives us 34 players under contract. Add in about 7 mill in roll over and you get at most 22 mill in space and needing to fill 17 spots on the roster. Not a lot of room to cut or trade gusy like Revis, Sanchez or Harris who will actually cost you cap space in dead money if traded or cut. At that point bringing in inexpensive vets will be a must. You may be bale to do one decent size singing, but if we can retain guys like Edwards, Keller, and Green for low ammounts we go ahead and do it. Woody is not going to scrap this and go 2-14 next year. No way in hell he lets that happen. Sanchez will most likely be our Backup or let go after June when his dead money number drops. I don't see the space to be eatign that contract rgiht now without a lot of reworkings.
We can let these guys go, but it's the people we bring in that will determine our future. I just feel the Jets won't make the right decision.
