Actually I think this is the much more likely scenario - there really isn't any reason to bring in a new head coach next year unless you think the team is close and is being held back by Ryan. I don't see any argument for that. Better to let Rex give it a shot and either succeed or be shown the door when the new QB gets drafted. On the other hand, the new GM should tell Rex exactly who his assistant coaches are going to be (especially on offense), since he hasn't shown any ability to choose those. If Rex then resigns so be it, but it would be a massively stupid decision on his part - he is not getting hired again as a head coach without first being a DC for a while after the last couple of years.
And you make it sound like her's the owner/gm/hc all in one. The only person in the organization that doesn't have someone to answer to is WJ. Remember that by losing Rex you will most likely lose thurman and pettine.
If Tanny goes, Rex will go. Any new GM coming in will dump Rex and Sanchez and start over with his team. Sanchez will be backup next year, I imagine a guy like Matt Moore will be behind center for the Jets or someone like him.
i like rex ryan, but if it is necessary to fire rex in order to get rid of sanchez then that is what needs to happen. i dont like the way rex does certain things and i think he is a bit of a jackass at times but he is a decent coach and my biggest qualm with him is his continued insistence on putting this douche of a qb out on the field.
This killed Holmgren with the Browns. He kept Mangini around for a useless year of the same stuff and then let him go. I think we get a house cleaning next year or in 2014 depending on how Woody wants to play the MetLife Super Bowl season. Being embarrassed repeatedly during that season would be his nightmare unless the Jets are in rebuild mode and obviously so. It's a bad situation all around for him.
The argument for not bringing Rex back is that only a weak GM would walk in the door with a head coach on the firing line. Also, I don't think Rex ever gets another head coaching job. He's the age now where nobody looks at him as young and unproven and maybe worth a shot. If he leaves the Jets without a ring he will get a lot of offers as DC but nobody is going to see him as capable of managing a modern NFL offensive staff and that's the name of the game these days.
I recall a TV show called Blue Mountain State where the lead actor wanted to only be the backup QB so he could get the perks of being on the team without having to shoulder the responsibility of success for the team. Sanchez reminds me of that - he enjoys the celebrity lifestyle but doesn't take his leadership seriously. Sanchez has been training for this job most of his life, but he doesn't have the focus of a leader.
