Why would the Niners would trade Smith for Sanchez? Not only is Smith a much better QB he makes less next year. I don't think anyone would trade for a back-up QB like Sanchez making 8.5 million. Now if Smith is released then he would be a good signing. But we would still need to find a sucker to take Sanchez's salary. The problem with releasing Sanchez is not only the 8.5 million guaranteed but the immediate cap hit on top of that and then adding in another QB salary. Unless we can get someone to take Sanchez's salary we are likely stuck with him as a back-up/starter next year, along with a high QB draft pick and a cheap veteran that can run the team next year.
The only thing you said that I agree with is that Smith is a game manager, that is very true. Here's the problem though: To be a successful game manager requires a very strong ground game. We don't have that. Sanchez could be a similar caliber game manager as Smith is (with more turnovers) if he had a top flight feature back like Smith does. If we had Smith on our roster from day one my guess is we'd have maybe one more win then we currently do, if that. I would say Smith definitely has a better arm and better accuracy...problem is he'd still have Kerley as his number one target. That's not a knock on Kerley, I like him...as a slot receiver. Changing the QB alone isn't going to magically make the running backs and receivers better. The RBs aren't going to start finding lanes, bouncing off tackles to the outside. The WRs aren't going to start running incredible routes and making spectacular sideline catches and never drop a pass again. If people want to hate on Sanchez that's fine, I have no particular allegiance to him other than he is currently on our roster (meaning as soon as he's gone I couldn't care less about him whereas some people seem so in love with him for some reason they may follow with him). But the crucial mistake they make is not realizing the difference between Sanchez being A problem and not THE problem. There are a lot of things wrong with this team, all these people who think we just swap out Sanchez with even a semi-competent QB will catapult us into Super Bowl contenders are going to be sorely, sorely mistaken.
Mark Sanchez would be the perfect backup QB for the 49ers. Great defense, strong run game in a diverse offense. If Kaepernick goes down Sanchez is about the best thing you could hope to have going into the playoffs with a loaded team like that. Would you rather have a good QB as a backup? Of course you would but the economics of the NFL means no more Steve Young backups. What the 49ers want is a QB that has proven he does not fold under playoff pressure. Mark Sanchez is their guy. Now hopefully they see it that way. Sanchez would jump at the chance to go play on the west coast at this point.
Greg is as good as Alex Smith. Looking at his play in college and last week he can game manage for less while the team finds a franchise guy.
He's a top 5 QB in QB rating. I'm really surprised he got benched. I wouldn't mind that at all. Good comp%, low turnovers, he'd be better than Sanchez, most likely.
I would pass on Alex smith if he was released. He would have problems here without harbaughs offense and his surrounding cast. Now a Sanchez for smith trade would be good.
Jesus Christ. Just release Sanchez and eat the cap hit. Don't screw the future over. As bad as GMac could be, he can't be worse than Sanchez anyway. Why stunt his growth? And spend extra that you don't need to spend?
Smith was a bust for years before Hardbaugh came along and turned him into what he is witch is a game manager at best. With that said I don't see him succeeding without being in that system. The Jets would just destroy him like they do to the rest of there QB's because the people who control the offense are clueless and haven't had success
The 49ers aren't gonna cut Alex Smith why would they do that. Do you think management gives a shit that his feelings are hurt???because they dont its a cut throat buisness. They would trade him at best and want a few second round picks in return or maybe more
Brad, I think you are on to something to some extent, but I doubt the Niners want to pick up Sanchez's salary in total to be a backup for them. Likely the Jets would have to cut a deal with them where the Jets pick up some of his salary. The other plus for the Niners is if they are really committed to not playing Smith, they're gonna want to get him out of there. Same as the Jets should feel about Sanchez. I see it working for both teams to have these two trade teams, but I don't see the numbers as quite adding up without some help.
The 49ers are either paying Alex Smith 7.5 million next year or cutting him before April 1st. I'll bet you they'd eat the difference between Sanchez and Smith, which is only 750k for a season in order to get Smith off the the team and a decent backup QB on it. You know that Smith will never accept being the backup QB there and a significant percentage of 49ers fans won't accept that either. They have a similar problem to us but with a lot more overall talent.
No, no, and hell no. Unless Vernon Davis is coming as well. Alex smith has weapons to throw the ball to and one of the best running backs in the league yet he was still limited in his offensive abilities. No picture him on this Jets team with the receivers or lack of receivers. A 1 year transition qb maybe but I'm a but certain that he'll go back to the inconsistent sloppy qb he was in the mike singletary mike Nolan era.
Exactly, put Alex smith on the jets and it will be Sanchez 2.0 Some of the games from 09 and 10 were very reminiscent of Jets home games of lately where the anti Alex smith wrath from the crowd rivaled that of what Sanchez is getting now. He's a decent qb on a good team (the same could be said for Sanchez when he's had weapons as well though.
We have no idea if Greg is as good as Alex Smith until we actually see him play. He "managed" the game for a quarter of a game -- that doesn't logically equate to 16 full games.
