Makes sense to me. Just the kind of game manager Rex wants. He's only 28. Thoughtd?

We shouldn't be wasting any playoff picks on a stopgap QB, unless we believe that Alex Smith will be our franchise qb -- the Jets will be drafting a QB in the 2014 draft, in my honest opinion. We will find our next franchise qb in that draft. So we either need to suck next year or use our picks to move up in 2014. The 2013 off-season will be about getting more depth and offensive skill players (aside from qb).

We need to retool the ground game for a move like that to pay dividends.

If the 49ers want to trade Smith for Sanchez, which would not be a bad deal all around then sure. The Jets wind up paying a 8.9 million cap hit for not having Sanchez on the roster. They pay another 7.5 million for Alex Smith for the season.

They play Smith next year and in 2014, drafting his replacement in 2014 most likely with the plan being to have the guy start in 2015.

The Jets go maybe 6-10 next year and have a top 12 pick with which to take Smith's replacement in the 2014 draft.

Jets fans are spared the Sanchez anguish next season and the Jets probably sell a few more tickets in the process.

Nobody laments Smith's departure after 2014 because by then it is obvious he is not the answer despite the fact that the Jets might well manage 10-6 that year.

It's an all-around win. Much better than having to play Sanchez, McElroy or Tebow next year. This all assuming that what the Jets give up for Smith is Sanchez straight up.

Alex fucking Smith...Are you kidding me?

He's literally Sanchez years ahead in time with an affinity for less turnovers nowadays

I must've missed the year Mark Sanchez completed 70% of his passes

Oh and yeah the QB is the only reason we sucked this year, it had nothing to do with the piss poor special ed team, our mummified linebackers or the strainers we have on the offensive line.

ALEX SMITH ARE YOU HEARING ME, COME SAVE US!!!

I could have sworn someone started an Alex Smith thread in the last week or so. Still no.

I think it's a logical place to start looking, but all depends on if they can in some way part ways with Sanchez. If they can't, forget about it.

Absolutely not. The guy stinks, his ceiling is basically the same as Sanchez except he had a competent coaching staff - which incidentally gave up on him the second they were able to groom a replacement.

you mean we've had one before? I guess Namath, but how about in most of our lifetimes?

This would be the only plausible scenario that I would want to bring Smith here.

I think that if you get rid of Sanchez, you go ahead and get rid of Rex Ryan and start fresh with a "system" guy like Chip Kelly. This administration does not appear well equipped to develop a quarterback.

The presence of Sparano is like a turd in the punchbowl.

Trading for Alex Smith would be similar to signing Neil O'Donnell as a free agent. The advantage for the Jets would be in getting rid of Sanchez cleanly.
