None of those points would represent flaws in an argument. The fact that not many 7th round QBs make a roster (not really true) or ever start (much closer to true) is a data point that supports the fact that most 7th round QBs aren't very good. It's also not true that not many QBs are taken in the 7th round. Over the course of the past 20 years, you've got a very sizable sample of QBs drafted in the 7th round, and it's littered with failures.
These people citing stats are clueless. In one quarter plus you saw things from McElroy that Sanchez never does. The throw to Kerley was ACCURATE because he put it on the back shoulder where only his guy has a chance at it. He gave his guy a chance to make a play and Kerley did. He rolled away from pressure to buy time something Sanchez has never grasped and was calm in the pocket. He seemed to understand where the rushers were coming from and knew where to move into safer areas. Threw the ball away when nothing was there. Even on the the throw to Hill it was a timing pattern for a big receiver with long arms to go up and get it. It would have been right on target if not for the hold disrupting the pattern. These are all basic fundamentals that Sanchez struggles with which is why I do not buy the argument that Sanchez would be better with better weapons at his disposal. He has proven that he doesn't do the things well that he and only he is 100% responsible for. McElroy is no savior by any means and he is unlikely to be the long term answer but the guy should be on the field if for no other reason than Sanchez has proven that he should not be.
Yeah, counters, traps and draws have been almost non-existent in the Jets playbook this season. All of them are what you normally use to put teeth in a play-action passing attack. I could live to be 100 and I will never understand what went on in the Jets brain-trust from 2011 to 2012. 2009 and 2010 were obviously all about pumping the window with one massive brainfart (rookie QB) involved. 2011 and 2012 just look like idiots out walking around.
Excellent post. I sometimes wonder when I read posts here today from Sanchez Fans if they were even watching the game yesterday. McElroy played better than we have seen from Sanchez pretty much all year. Yep, that is true.
I'm not a majority type of guy, I know enough about this game that I don't have to hop on w/ the majority. I'm not one who gives up on players/teams/coaches too quickly. You guys want new QBs and HCs every 2-3 years, I know you win w/ stability in this league and the great franchises fight through rough years rather than make quick changes.
I would agree with you in some instances but I can't with Sanchez. When you fight through the rough years, you're supposed to make a climb each year, whether it be subtle or significant. But Sanchez hasn't made a climb since his rookie year. He has both sloped and plataeud...and sloped again. I once too thought that Sanchez would tone down the turnovers and not make stupid decisions...but four years later its the same.
I agree with that for the most part...but even guys like Joe Gibbs and Bill Cowher changed their quarterbacks when they weren't getting it done. Cowher didn't continue to ride Stewart because he made it to a couple of AFC title games.
Next game will tell us a lot. He will have to throw more and there won't be the wave of emotion. Will be fun to see. I really hope I'm wrong about him, but his arm worries me
Yeah I have read stuff and everyone seems amazed, hopefully his new arm will e on display. I'm excited to see him play. Hopefully sparano will call smarter games too to help McElroy out
Glad you pointed this out, I wonder what Sporano's gameplan will be like since he coached Pennington.
I mentioned in this thread or another. At ne with 3rd and goal we went shotgun multiple times with Sanchez. Here with Greg we went run, run, easy pa bootleg. You saw it Indy too, twice we have 3rd and goal and twice Powell runs for a score. We also saw counters and mis direction yesterday in the running game, if this forces sparano to call more runs and different runs, it can only help this team. I do want see Greg toss some deep throws. I wasn't very exited about those from him. We might need to stay away from them for the time being.
