1) Uhm, everyone looks good in their highlight packages. That's why they are called "highlights" . . . duh. Nice video, but nothing you posted or wrote addressed the issue at hand in any logically meaningful way, whatsoever. 2) We all had "high hopes" for Sanchez. He was selected with a top-ten draft pick that we traded up to acquire. Yes, he has a lot of physical potential, but unfortunately for Mark, a significantly high portion of the game is mental. For whatever reason, he tends to panic under pressure and makes game-altering bad decision after game-altering bad decision. He's also woefully inaccurate (that is probably BOTH mental and physical). 3) I'll ask you again, since you in no way, shape, or form, answered the question at hand: What was your comment based on? Why aren't we as (hopefully objective) observers allowed to think that Mark Sanchez is as bad as HE has played? He has sucked this season . . . so why isn't it fair to say so?
You questioned me about my comment which was, "He is not as bad as he is playing" or something similar. I showed you a video of plays he has made in the past, what he has shown what he is capable of doing as a young QB. You say everyone looks good in their highlight video and you are right. However you have to be good enough to have a highlight reel. I don't base a developing QB's worth on their quartile ranking in their first years. It is an added incentive if they rank high. You look at "highlights" that give a glimpse at what your offense will be capable of down the road. You look at physical traits that he possesses that you can build on, so that one day they can be a statistically superior QB. In order to be a statistically relevant QB, you need physical skill. He has that. Next step would be to develop his mind. Help him to make good decisions. He has failed. This can be worked on. This is why I see hope. Hope that we don't have to watch this franchise develop another QB and instead expend resources on a pass rusher, RB, WR, etc.
I was at the game today. The crowd turned on Sanchez early. The loudest cheers all day came when McElroy started warming up & then came in. Then Sanchez ran into Rex's ass and fumbled the clipboard.
The short version: we'll see. He didn't give an answer, he just said they're going to look at everything.
Then McElroy is probably starting next week. To be clear on my opinion, it isn't all Sanchez's fault. But this team needs a breath of fresh air on offense. And when that's the case, the first person out is usually the qb.
Ok, you still . . . "see hope", but at what point does it become fair to characterize that "hope" as "blind" or, in point of fact, hopeLESS? This is Mark's 4th year in the NFL and he looks as utterly lost as he ever has. Furthermore, it's not like he has ever proven himself to be a franchise quarterback in the past . . . he's consistently been at or near the bottom of the league in the most meaningful quarterback statistics. And while he was the starting quarterback of two teams that reached the AFC championship game in back to back seasons, he was irrefutably the biggest weakness on both of those teams. Statistics certainly aren't the entire story, but they still fundamentally serve as an objective way to assess performance on a league-wide level. I'm sorry, but things like completion percentage matter. And statistically speaking, he's one of the most inaccurate quarterbacks in the league, year in and year out. When you combine this with his infuriating propensity for game-changing turnovers and overt inability to not stare down his primary receiver, he's simply not a viable option at quarterback. Finally, I think you somewhat missed the point of my initial post. My intention certainly wasn't to incite yet another debate on the merits of Sanchez as an NFL quarterback, but rather, it was to point out that your declaration of "Sanchez clearly is not as bad as he is playing" was inherently unfair and unverifiable . . . after all, he HAS been that bad.
For the record, I don't think any QB would be having success with the personnel the Jets have on offense right now. I do think most of them would be making more out of it than Sanchez is at the moment though. He's getting sunk by his own errors, which in combination with other players not being very good makes the whole offense putrid. This offense looked bad in training camp and with a couple of exceptions has continued the trend all season. The Jets have scored 194 points on offense in 12 games. They are on a pace to score 258 for the season. In training camp I said the offense would struggle to score 300 points and really maybe to score 250. That's what's happened.
statistics mean a lot to me, I am a statistician. However, completion percentage is very dependent on multiple factors. Even Ray Lucas said today after the game, and he rags on Sanchez consistently, that Mark is throwing the ball to guys who have no idea what route they're running. Add to that the dropped passes, etc. people say that dropped passes are a part of every team. This team, these coaches, these players are not every other team. No other team is dealing with what the jets are. Other teams may have more drops, but as the Jets don't have many scoring opportunities, each drop is amplified. Each route ran wrong is amplified. Just like every pick that Mark throws is amplified.
Ok, so that explains this year. How about the fact that Sanchez has the same completion percentage for his career that he has for this year? 55%? If you were looking at a baseball hitter who had a .245 average midway through his 4th season and his career batting average was .245 would you think that he was a good hitter who just happened to be not hitting for 4 years in a row?
this. I was going to point out, yet AGAIN, how inaccurate Sanchez has been for the duration of his career, but your post succinctly states as such.
I attribute his low completion percentage prior to this year to him being a young, underdeveloped QB who had one year of college experience. That is why I say that Sanchez's struggles are complex and it is hard to compare his development to Eli or Rodgers, etc. Not only are pieces constantly in motion, he has had poor development, and received little help in the way of tools, and Tebow, and so on and so forth. Not to mention that Sanchez has flat out been unable to rise above the challenge and pull himself and his team out of the trash can. A lot is on Sanchez. However, what is humorous (in my opinion) is that people think: 1) The team has given Sanchez every opportunity to succeed. 2) That any other QB would waltz right into this situation and win. It's ludicrous to think 2) is true. In my honest opinion, should McElroy start next week, he will likely struggle. I would want him to succeed, but let's be honest. Tom Brady was an odd-occurance. McElroy is a 3rd string QB for a reason. No one thought he would be an NFL QB even after being a great QB for Alabama. There is a reason for that. One more thing, I don't want Sanchez to work out because I like him. I want him to work out because that is what would be the best for this franchise. You win some, you lose some. In the end - I just want a Jets W every week. These back and forths (TV, boards, papers, etc) are getting tough. It'd be nice to have a QB like Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers.
Get a fucking clue. this is not a Sanchez problem This is a coordinator problem. On the third pick, he hit Schillens in the hands, though a step late. In today's NFL if you get to count to four and the QB has the ball, that's a problem. McElroy was successful, late because the AZ defense had been on the field for 35 minutes, and the Jets were able to run on them. Let Norv Turner get fired, and bring him in as OC
What this guy said. Kerley, Keller, and a rookie in Hill. Look at the skill position players around him...we've drafted backwards...defense, instead of skill position players (3years to develop except RB) and failed to stay invested in the OL . Couple that with Schottenheimer for his first three years...how has number one over all Bradford been this year?
Wow you morons are still defending this guy? You have absolutely no evidence to back you up. None. You certainly don't have stats. In fact there's not one stat you can point to that indicates he's even an average QB. It certainly isn't the eye test. Anyone with an once of football knowledge can see he has zero pocket presence/awareness , terrible footwork and still stares down his wrs. He also has always had a god awful comp. % and can't read defenses. So Wtf is exactly your argument? He sucked when he had a great oline , running game and wrs. He sux now. Connect the fucking dots. The guy just got benched for Greg farkin McElroy. Admit your wrong and move on.
I have MORE than given Sanchez the benefit of the doubt...and I will stick by what I have been saying about him being given shit and asked to make diamonds... That said, I am a JETS fan and I always did Like Greg Mc (In preseason) so I will almost never root against a player.... As long as the JETS perform and get better....which they did for at least 1 drive....and that is 1 drive more than Mark had today.
It's not an either/or. The Jets offense is hurt by bad playcalling, and then Sanchez makes the problem worse by failing to read the defense before the snap, panicking whenever the pocket breaks down, and forcing bad passes. So many of Sanchez's turnovers would've been avoided if he would just give up on plays that don't work.
